Speaking of the O-line ; Two questions... Do you guys think we overpaid for JC Tretter? Also, what do we think of Shon Coleman? Can he be a solid RT?
I think Tretter does his job...He's no Alex Mack, but few are. We'll know about Coleman this year. This is about the time Mitchell Schwartz started playing really well, although he started day one. fingers crossed...
If the Browns aren't at least looking at Demarco Murray, it may be telling that they plan on drafting at least 1 RB in those first 4 picks. I hope Dorsey has studied this class as well as he did last year and knows what Haley is looking for in his scheme.
Crow should be begging to stay. All he needs to do is look at the way Haley uses his backs. Crow gets better as he gets more touches. Haley > Jackson
I like Barkley. He'll be a great pick. He'll also easily be available at #4, and would probably last all the way to at least #7 if the Browns pass. If Dorsey doesn't got with Mayfield or Rosen at #1, no... I am no getting on board. The rest of the moves he's made thus far are solid... I'm not going to trash them like some folks, but it always will come back to the QB. Who's the QB? I'm a Tyrod fan and still think the Browns need to be taking a QB at #1.
Do you really care where Dorsey selects Mayfield? IMHO, the odds of Mayfield being there at 4 are better than Barkley being there at 4.
Yes. But we had to. We had lived through the Cam Erving years and didn't have another viable option. Also, yes. There's a lot of interesting pieces/discussion on the topic, but offensive line has become almost more difficult to coach up from college than any other position (aside from perhaps quarterback). The differences for linemen in college versus the pros is stark compared to many of the other positions. As a result, it's taking guys - especially those non-first round pick guys - much longer to develop into quality NFL linemen. Coleman was further behind the sticks as a result of his health at Auburn and then early into his NFL career. He shows up in the running game well, so they need to continue to work on his pass protection. As @IrishDawg42 said, this should be the make-or-break year.
Yes. We seem to have this argument retroactively all the time. Would Jimmy Garoppolo or Derek Carr been drafted in the second round in 2014 if you had a mulligan? Would Bortles have been the third overall pick that year? If you like a QB, you take that QB. I get perceived value... but we're not talking the difference of first overall and even those guys above (62nd, 36th, respectively). We're talking three draft slots. A franchise can be turned around with the right QB, but in the modern era a franchise has never been turned around by a dominant RB. How many Super Bowls did LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson win combined? HINT: Fewer than Carson Wentz has in just his second season.
Plus, Barkley will for sure be there at #4. With all the desire for QBs - not to mention some premium defensive talent - he'll last until #7 - #10 if the Browns *don't* take him at #4. Mayfield may not make it to #4 if we pass on him at #1. Rosen and Mayfield are the clear-cut top QBs of this class. Josh Allen is a tight end masquarading as a quarterback, soon to be a colossal NFL draft bust. Sam Darnold is a shorter, smaller, younger, slower, weaker-armed DeShone Kizer.
I did not say to draft Barkley INSTEAD OF Baker. Does it really matter who goes 1st and who goes 4th as long as BOTH are drafted?
That said, I support drafting a guy like Brian O'Neill if he's there at #64 to be a potential back-up (experience at LT, too, so he fits two spots well). Worst case, tap into free agency in 2019 if Coleman fails to develop. They'll still have an unbelievable amount of cap space.
If you take Barkley at #1, I can almost promise you that you're not getting Baker at #4. New York, Denver, Miami, and Arizona have all shown more interest in Baker than any of the other guys. If the Browns were to show their hand and leave the QB slot blank after the first pick, no only are New York and Indy going to have a cavalcade of trade offers for their picks, they themselves could be looking to take a signal caller. If the first pick isn't a QB, I can almost guarantee the next two will be. And I don't want to be left holding the bag if Rosen/Mayfield come off the board and we're starting at Sam Darnold's big, dopey, ginger head.
