Khaira suspended two games for actions in Oilers game against Blues
Forward punished for cross-checking defenseman Dunn in third period Tuesday

NEW YORK -- Edmonton Oilers forward Jujhar Khaira has been suspended for two games, without pay, for cross-checking St. Louis Blues defenseman Vince Dunn during NHL Game No. 524 in Edmonton on Tuesday, Dec. 18, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 9:03 of the third period. Khaira was assessed a major penalty for cross-checking as well as a game misconduct.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Khaira will forfeit $7,258.06. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Preds’ Johansen to have DoPS hearing for high-sticking Scheifele…

Ryan Johansen of the Nashville Predators will have a chat with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday after he high-sticked Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele during a 5-1 defeat.

As the two forwards were battling in the corner late in the first period, they separated and Johansen’s stick came straight down onto Scheifele’s head, sending the Jets star to the ice. Johansen received only a two-minute minor for the infraction, but will likely be receiving some additional punishment after his phone hearing.

Scheifele was uninjured and remained in the game.

Johansen could try reasoning with the DoPs like Radko Gudas did before he was suspended 10 games for slashing Mathieu Perreault in the neck last season. The Philadelphia Flyers defenseman, who had a history before that incident, said it was an unfortunate play and that he’d never used his stick in that manner before.

Of course, all players must be in control of their sticks during play. While Johansen probably didn’t intend to hack Scheifele in the head after their battle, it was still his stick and he’ll likely get some punishment out of it. (NBC's PHT)

^^prior history of not doing that doesn't take away from the current incident of chopping at the player's head. sorry.

    Johansen gets 2 !

Johansen will be suspended two games for his actions against Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele on Thursday against the Jets, per NHL Player Safety.

Johansen will thus miss two of the team's final three games before the All-Star break Saturday versus the Panthers and Monday against the Avalanche. With no healthy forwards available to replace him, the Predators will be forced to either recall one from the AHL or to run with 11 forwards and seven defensemen. Johansen can return next Wednesday to face the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.

Malkin to have a hearing for swinging his stick at Rafls head.

Too bad the stick missed Raffl (although that acting job was exquisite). He deserved a McSorley after that right hand to the back of Malkin's head.
I hope Gorgeous George considers the entire event when doling out a punishment, if any.

wow halo tell us how you really feel ? regardless of the punch, malken was reckless with the stick. no suspension as there was no contact and he simply swung and missed his head. if he made contact, then 3-5. now 0.

I actually agree that Raffl's punch was more egregious, and possibly just as dangerous. Unlike Malkin, his punch was not being "careless" with his fist, and it gives Malkin a ready-made excuse: ""I was not thinking straight after getting clocked in the head, but it was unintentional". Raffl deserves a longer suspension than Malkin; but I think it'll be zero each.

In todays NHL, 9 out of 10 times the retaliation always takes precedents. I agree tho, both should be suspended.

    The hearing is today.

i don't think Raffl will get suspension for throwing a punch. Egregious or not, it's a shove/punch to the back of his head. If the league starts suspending players for that, then the league will get a whole lot worse IMO.

I think the punch to the head was potentially more harmful than the stick. Malkin did not do a full-chopping motion with it; he just let it swing high. Raffl's action was more reckless and potentially more dangerous. I think it blows that he does not face the same penalty as Malkin.
