this is a tough one. when i first saw it i was thinking that it was all on Oduya. After seeing it a few times Im not so sure. Palmieri is coming across at him while Oduya has possession and Oduya sees him, gets rid of the puck, and turns in to the boards. this is one of those unfortunate hits but Im not really sure what Palmieri is expected to do in this scenario.

^Oduya fumbling the puck a little screwed himself up here i think.

Let's see OV get hammered for that hit on komorov.

will Holzer get a chance to spin for big money for clocking the ref during his scrap with Wilson?

Can't run a player like that, have to pull up a little bit.
4 years ago, destroy him, but players have stopped doing this for the most part. Oduya's stopping made it look worse, but on the other hand it highlighted what Palmeri was doing. Oduya was fine, otherwise it might have been a problem for the office.

its a race for Palmieri to defend the red line. the little fumble by Oduya really screwed him i think.
you're probably right that this play is no longer accepted in the NHL but that sucks if so. I think any player in Palmieri's shoes does the same thing, he's committed to taking the body and in this specific scenario was able to defend the red line in doing so. Oduya loses his way for a fraction of a second and turns in. At that point I think its ok for Palmieri to have decided that he's definitely taking the body because he's so close to Oduya. To me its similar to getting to a certain point at a red light and make up your mind that you're going thru even if it turns yellow. Palmieri looked like he reached that point already in that play and was coming in clean. also didn't look like Palmieri had an ugly/malicious/ratty follow thru.

The "vulnerable position" thing comes into play here too I think. The puck was gone, he knew it was going to be gone, and he made a choice to finish running him when everybody else has learned to let up without giving up the hit completely. It was very obvious to me (and all my non high level hockey experience) that he intended to use the boards to inflict pain in my opinion and that's why I thought it was a major right away. He looked guilty because of the line he took, speed, and distance traveled anyway.

If anything, I thought Palmeri made it way too easy on the refs. If he even makes the appearance that he lets up I think they let it go and he still smears Oduya and wipes him out of the play.

Also of note is Kimmerly the referee didn't make the call, Jackson at the far end did. Kimmerly is a suck, they don't let him do playoff games even though he's been around for over 1000 games.

i think its ok there for Palmieri to be solely committed to holding down the red line by playing the body. its ok for a player to be 100% committed to a hit as long as its legal. the timing on this was fine, Oduya was reaching for the redline making himself vulnerable already but his fumble and subsequent turn in to the boards is what made this ugly. if the puck doesn't jump up and Oduya handles it cleanly I think its a good hit by Palmieri and possibly an icing by Oduya. It didn't turn out that way because things changed so late in the play. this is a tough one.

I agree it's tough, and Oduya has some responsibility. I didn't mean to imply he was free of all blame.

Now I thought it was a major because he banged his head off of the boards and headshots are an auto misconduct. I'm not sure how they interpret that. I have to do homework, I may be a little backwards. The head injury (blood) was the result of an illegal hit but it was an indirect result.

I do believe it was an easy charge call (ANA was running people prior to that and Oduya was already lined up once) for a minor. I'm not positive about the major the more I look at it and the more I consider the actual rules because it's based on the result.

Something else I've read chattering about was Carcillo's role and if he should have been suspended for jumping onto the ice. The refs got that call right. There was no roughing or altercation called, so too many men is the right call by the officials. I was actually hoping for a suspension.

I think I would be more comfortable with a 2 min charge but if the injury is an auto misconduct then I agree with the call.

Palmeri had crosshairs on him from earlier in the game too.

The more I read the rules and look for precedents, the more confused I get. I fucking hate that.

all valid points bob. interesting to see what they will do w/ plays like this moving forward.

thats a great site for refs you posted earlier, thanks for that. i think you may have posted it once in the past and I thought that I had bookmarked but hadn't.

    You're very welcome.
I enjoy calling out individual refs that are nothing short of very mediocre at best after 20 years in the game. I also like giving respected and accomplished refs a pass for a mistake. I don't blame the officials for too much, but they have a good-ol-boy network like everything in hockey that is worthy of scrutiny.

Big distance, went high, went for a 'kill shot'. That's not hockey, to me it doesn't matter if he caught the head or not. Puck was gone long enough for Bortuzzo to adjust too, not that it mattered because that was headhunting.

He's getting a hearing and I hope he's hammered for it.

Well, the hammer fell and he got 2 games. Like I've said before, that'll teach em.
