Wow, wish i'd gotten home sooner. I can't believe the stupidity of Oiltown (mebbe I can). But this trade of Hall is crazy. Hall was the one I would have kept over eb, yak and rnh. good for devil fans, they needed one.

Subban was a fan favorite and spent big coin working on a new children's hospital in habtown. I wonder how that is gonna end up. pred's win big.

TB's signing of spiccoli is almost a footnote today. i'm just personally happy he re-signed. and generous jim didn't give him 10 mil for 7.

Yeah, what's up with that? THall first overall?

With so many eager suitors for Stamkos I think it's highly unlikely that BUF would/could sign him. In fact, there was open discussion that they were being used to drive up his price. Still, I'm happy we avoided a sordid repeat of last year's courting of Babs.

I'm happy for him and for the Bolts. But I am even happier for the Sabres.

The Sabres should be very good in due time. I do not see any real good to be had from trying to push the team's development faster than the pace that nature has established for young men. That would have been the intended effect of BUF inking Steve. It makes the Sabres one of the big winners today.

At first look the taylor hall trade seems one sided, but most teams wouldn't part with their #1 D-man.

someone chimed in on bleacher report and called the devils-oilers trade "the single worst 1 for 1 trade in the history of the NHL!"

I read on CBS for the Weber for Subban deal..."why?"

  9. skinny123 Guest

It was a bad deal, a forced deal, there were no deals out there, shouldn't haved rushed it.

if the oilers would've called every team and asked what would they give up for Hall, I bet the answer would be more than what the Devils gave up...

I guess you could say that about a lot of trades.

This is true, but I wish they would quit trying to oversimplify it to the point that it's misleading. The numbers aren't wrong, but without a context it steers fans/readers the wrong way in almost every case.

Over the next 2 years the Preds are paying 2 million less.
They spend 4 milllion instead of 16 million on upfront, escrow exempt, bonus money over the next 12 months.
Then they get to collect 2. 5 million more in escrow the next 2 years, hedging against losses, but either way they hold onto more money for longer.

In summary, over the next 2 years as they look to contend, they get 2 million dollars, get to hang onto 2.5 million more as a type of insurance against losses, and they don't have to worry about slapping 8 million dollar checks while they're still in the process of securing payments from fans and sponsors.

Finanicially, in the near term, I believe this is a huge monetary win for the Preds without setting the roster back. For a budget franchise, this is an amazing win. Subban gets big bonus money 5 years from now, plenty of time to figure that out.

Let's say they go to the cap, they're getting that money to spend, if they choose, and they only lose 1.125 difference against the cap.

Combined with the Nystrom buyout, they save another million over 2 years and 2 million more against the cap, should the cap come into play.

Big teams deal in cap dollars more often, budget teams deal in real dollars more often still. I think it's important to factor that in when assessing trades, I think much of that has been lost the last couple of years as Lennie has finally adjusted to how a cap system changes the goal of some many other transactions.

Can't believe Spiccoli is a footnote. That's amazing.

The one thing about Hall that drove me nuts is that the skill players really struggled to play with him. He's an outstanding all around player but he's been a disaster for coaches as they haven't been able to build a line around him in my opinion.

Still, I can't believe they made that trade to NJ. Huge win for Shero.

i just think Hall is worth a helluva lot more. I know Edm needed Defense, but at that price it's scary they didn't want more.

  15. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

So many layers of good for the Preds.
From a marketing standpoint, Subban is gold. Donates time and money, out there with kids, not shy around the cameras...and he can play a little hockey. For a coach like Laviolette that lets dmen fly around, I can't imagine a better fit for Subban other than Dallas.

The only downsides I can see would be if he hates NOT having as many eyes on him or if the change to the lockerroom is damaging. For a team that hasn't been past the 2nd round, it's tough to see that as a real problem though.

The Hall trade looks worse by the minute on paper.
If Larsson isn't the bust many say he's been (which I suspect he'll be pretty good), landing Lucic might actually make this a stronger roster in my opinion. It's a tough trade to swallow, but I think it will make it easier for this team to play a system without Hall and Lucic has a very clear and defined role in the short term, something this team has been trying to figure out all over the place.

There's no saving PC from the fans, but the Oil made have made themselves a better team come tomorrow, even with what appears to be a huge trade.

If Hall wasn't out of the way, they wouldn't be landing Lucic imo, but I don't expect Lennie to factor that in.

Of course if Looch, Boedker, Staal, Eriksson, or another good wing doesn't sign, time to destroy PC.

Wow! Was it the trade deadline yesterday? :D

  17. igloofn68 Guest

They did want more Fish. They were so hard up for defense that they made the trade anyways, taking a risk.......

  18. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

It was definitely a type of deadline, but I think they had this morning too.

GMs have all their offer letters finalized today.
If they're going to target UFAs, they have to adjust the roster by noon today.

That's why we saw all the buyouts finalized just now.

  19. Catfish Guest

i would've held out for more instead of biting at the first offer.

  20. skinny123 Guest

Yes and there was no need to rush, they had all the time in the world to make a trade. They should've gotten palmieri too IMO.
