Gotta give credit to Tallon, or whoever made the deal for Florida. Has nothing to do w/ Vancouver, I think they did alright here but I have a little backstory on that trade from the Fla perspective.

Florida has been trying to sign Ian McCoshen but he thought there was too much of a logjam at D in the organization, especially on the big club. So they deal Gudbranson and now McCoshen is in the process of signing w/ the Panthers. Should become official pretty soon.

I would be willing to bet big pesos that Tallon was not very interested in trading Gudbranson. I think part of the reason he was [del]demoted[/del]"promoted" was because of circumstances like this. Gudbranson's underlying numbers blow goats and have. Wouldn't be surprised if there was an under the table deal after Gudbranson's 1 year extension or something too.

I could go on and on with specifics about why I think Tallon was not going to trade Gudbranson no matter what he thought of McCoshen. Tallon is extremely loyal, and his acquisitions and contracts reflect that loyalty going back to when he was in the tv/radio booth for Chicago.

Gudbranson's ceiling in the forseeable future is defensive 2nd pair dman who is a complete black hole in terms of playmaking.

so credit should probably go to Tom Rowe then.
If they couldn't sign McCoshen this summer then theres no way he signs next year unless they get rid of some D in the interim.

and who is Tom Rowe anyway? anyone know anything about him before this hiring?

I'm not sure it was Tom Rowe either. I think it was an easy decision to move him as long as anybody else was doing it. One doesn't have to be a hockey person to see the recurring holes in his game, regardless of utilization, and what he's going to wan to get paid on his next contract.

He was with Laviolette and Maurice under Rutherford in Carolina as an assistant. I don't know anything about him beyond his wiki page and great haircut.

of course Will posted about Rowe before me.

Don't worry bob, just clearing space for Malkin per one of my sources (e4)

I'm trying to stay calm and wait for the offseason to play out.

I started twitching thinking of Shaw's extension.

Right now they only gained 3.05 million against the cap, same as a buyout (3.0 million for 17' and 1.5 for 18').

The only upside is that they have a grand total of 1.5 million more against the cap for 18'. That's not enough.

Unless this was a move to open up ice time to attract somebody like Vesey, this is big loser of a deal. Even then, if they use most of that space saved on Shaw, they'll even less likely to contend in 17' or 18'.

There are so many layers of negative to this I can't even right them down.

I'm not suggesting for a second that Teravainen is a sure fire core-type player. He'll end up being expensive. Statistically he looked worse because of his defensive workload and being buried with waiver trash and/or out of position as a LW since he's a natural RW or even a center. He can PK and play any situation on a contending team and he's on an ELC. That's the kind of contract you really need on a contender if this team is going for it.
He has very high end offensive skill and the trust in defensive situations from a HOF coach in Quenneville.

Obviously much of this deal has to do with 18' (Panarin), but they're still going for it in 17'.

Teravainen is already a top 6 in Carolina, right?
