  1. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

Per Yahoo Sports... and everybody now.

    Wow!

  2. With everything going down the last couple of days will Monday be a dull day?

  3. LAOJoe Assistant Coach Manager Patreon Silver Maple Leafs Eagles

Love it. Get id of that crappy contract.

    Seriously!

I don't know what to make of Nathan Horton though. His career is likely done. He can stay on IR for the length of his contract and get paid by the Leafs, but stay off the cap. Or he retires and the Jackets take an automatic cap hit but he doesn't get paid.

Thing here is the Jackets don't care about the cap as much as the totals to the team budget. Leafs save on the cap COMPLETELY! They can afford to pay money to players as long as it doesn't affect the cap. Jackets save $50,000 a year and get someone that actually plays.

It's all about cap relief for the leafs.

Now the Leafs have enough money to extend Phaneuf for an extra $5M a year.

Did Nonis just save his job? Finding a taker for Clarkson seemed impossible.

I can't verify this but I think that Horton's deal is not insured (wtf not is beyond me) so the BJs would've had to actual pay him his money while it stays off the cap. With Clarkson Columbus will at least get a top roster player out of it. Not sure if the Jackets are any better off from this but the Leafs sure are. Gotta think Toronto can eat Hortons deal pretty easily.

It works good for both teams, can doesn't have the money go to waste and the leafs get over $5 M a year in cap relief. Honestly I didn't think they would've been able to upload him, thrilled to say the least, non is is back in my good books, not sure he saves his job for next year though

i didn't mean "top of the roster" player although Im sure Clarkson welcomes a 2nd chance. He can possibly help in Columbus but still a real bad contract.

does this give Jarmo more money for Johansson?

skinny I feel like if you get out of Phaneuf, Lupul, and Reimer you'll start the upswing. Kessel tbd, you at least gotta listen if someone wants to blow your doors off.

Phaneuf and lupul shouldn't be a problem, even in the summer. I heard that it was CBJ that called the leafs, nonis just picked up the phone.

  15. i assumed u meant the NHL club as opposed to a farm roster.

  16. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I love this trade for both teams. Shocked it worked out.
Credit both gms for doing some damage control on terrible contracts. Nice way to close the books on two of the biggest disaster contracts of the decade.

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I really wish I knew whether or not CLB had insurance on Horton's contract. It would give us an indication of their commitment to spending.

  18. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

That's perfect if true, that way Nonis doesn't get much credit.

    They had no insurance.

If Bowman actually spoke the words, pretty rare.

If he's talking, he might be driving the market down imo. Carolina, NJ, and EDM are perfect candidates to take on salary for a quantity for quality type trade because their systems have so many holes. I'm not going to be shocked if Skinner, Cammalleri, Gordon, Ference, and some of the large multi year contracts in those franchises are being negotiated. I'm not sure Maloney is going to let Hanzal go, but I would bet Chicago makes a play there too since they have nearly developed centers to shop.

Obvious rentals (Glencross, Vermette, Petry) are still likely, but I don't see the Hawks spending beyond a 2nd on a band aid.
