I keep seeing the reports on the trade for Purcell, but the team hasn't confirmed it, as far as I can tell, and they didn't mention it on the game broadcast today.

 

Wilson spread those picks a year apart, he has plans to recoup the pick.

 

The Sabres and Sens just completed a BLOCKBUSTER seven player trade with a conditional draft pick also going to OTT.

Oh, BTW, all seven players are currently in the AHL. Looks like both teams wanted to shake up their farm teams since the top two scorers for both Rochester and Binghamton moved. I know ROC was over the AHL limit for vet. players, which made for less than ideal lineups. I do not know if this alleviated this or not.

Nevermind - saw confirmation on their website, just took a while. I'm not crazy about the trades for either of the wingers. Three picks for UFA's. Why couldn't we have gotten Ladd? And after all the shit between them and the Oilers, adding one has me off kilter. Either way, all three of these guys can contribute, and need to gel with the current group. Florida's strength comes from chemistry up and down their lines, and these deals will let them set the lines they want, after injuries forced a couple guys to move around.

End of the season in the division is going to be a race to the finish. I think the Panthers are the team to finish on top, but there won't be any games to take.off, between now and the end.

FLA's PR staff was probably just off a day early since Sunday/Monday was going to be busy. Probably just didn't have anything prepared for FRI-SAT.

Tallon has done a good job adding. I think it's good for that franchise/lockerroom to see tremendous adds in payroll (even though it's only 20% of the season) and help at the wings. I'm not sure Purcell, Hudler, or Kindl are going to help slot anybody better or help win games but it should be a boost for the rest of the roster. Hudler is definitely an improvement over somebody like Pirri.

For what they gave up, given the circumstances, I don't see any real downside to this for the Panthers as long as they're playing in mid-April.

 

There's still time to add. Boedker is still out there too. One more two-way forward (who's actually good in all 3 zones) and they're a very nasty matchup for anybody in the East not named Washington.

Ladd had a NMC. There's a real good chance he had no interest in going to FLA or a number of other franchises. If Tallon is targetting Ladd this offseason, he'll be one of the few GMs that have the space and the money to land him this summer.

The picks that were traded won't be missed. Florida lacks the staff to really manage mid round picks in my opinion (the development, slotting, and sales part). I like the trades. Hudler was one of the better offensive help options on the market.

 

I think Purcell sucks btw, but the depth doesn't hurt and they still have to figure out how to get more secondary scoring. For that price, I didn't see a downside.

 

I actually like the Schultz trade for Pit.
I don't want Rutherford picking outside of the top 50 anyway. Last time he hit on a mid to late pick over since the turn of the millennium, he didn't even get the player contract and he ended up elsewhere.

The big question is whether he'll recover the damage he suffered with the OIL going into a very reduced role or if the pressure of the playoffs and team expectations will completely destroy him. We saw what personal expectations did to him.

Good gamble for a 3rd. If Schultz does anything other than Suck every other game, it was worth the trade and the upside is still there to turn him into a useful bottom pair type.

 

Pens fans have to be very excited to get Schultz. A pick somewhere in the 80's-overall has, statistically, about a 25% chance of ever making it. You're certainly not likely to draft someone with his tangible assets.

The intangibles are what is troublesome, and why his value plummeted. It looked at times as though he had no idea what a d-man is supposed to do on the ice. That's not usually something that can be coached at this stage. But I view that as more likely an indictment of the Oil and their (non)system.

It's not that the Oil never drafted/acquired decent D prospects. They just never developed them. This trade has the potential to be viewed as highway robbery in the future. Of course, it's also possible that he'll never be able to cleanse the oil slick he's covered in.
