Thanks, Bob. In a nutshell, the cap penalty for players that retire early - after being traded to another team - only impacts the original team if the trade was made after the current CBA was approved. That's my understanding of what you wrote.

Richards was traded prior to the current CBA - PHL has nothing to worry about. VAN has to be concerned if Luongo retires early since he was traded later. BUF was worried about trading Ehrhoff because of the possible penalty so they wiped the slate clean by using the amnesty buy-out. I heard that the cap penalty may have been as high as $10MM if they had traded him and he then retired before he turned 37. (He would have garnered a second round pick and probably a bit more, so this was an expensive contract for BUF - they paid Ehrhoff nearly $40MM for three seasons and then had zero to show for it.)

The amnesty buy-outs - max. two/team - had to be used before July 1, 2014. This is no longer an option for any team.

Never say nothing, the last great draft pick to come out of here was Tomas Kaberle, a 7th round pick, not to mention that datsyuk was a 6th rounder.

    Buf gets:
    Kane
    Bogosian
    Unsigned goalie Kasdorf

    WPG gets:
    Myers
    Stafford @50%
    Lemieux
    Armia
    3rd Buffalo 1st rounder

I am NOT happy about losing Myers and Lemieux. I am indifferent about Stafford, (but I expect Jets fans will like this rental - he's very streaky and is in his contract-year, so I expect he'll light a few lamps down the stretch). I am actually happy to see Armia included; he has tremendous potential but is not motivated to play to that level on a routine basis. Perhaps the change will give him a needed kick in the ass.

The Jets also got the lower of BUF's three firsts, and that decreases the BUF's flexibility for draft-day maneuvering. However, this is exactly the type of trade this team needs to make: they moved 5 assets to get 3 and Kane is the elite talent in the bunch.

Without a doubt, WPG is the short-term slam-dunk winner on this trade. BUF needs G prospects and I think the Jets were over-supplied in that position. If Kasdorf becomes an NHL starter and if Kane grows up this could help make the Sabres a winning team in a few years. I doubt that they intend to flip Bogs, but I expect they'll be willing to listen. Any trade of this nature will require a few years to really assess, but again, it is the type of trade that needed to happen. For that reason, I am happy, the team is actually starting to rebuild after three or so years of tear-down.

Yes, they traded quantity for quality. I completely agree with the structure of the trade.
If Kane turns into a legitimate first line player (he has the talent), then I still think it was worth the cost given the circumstances, even if the assets turn into quality NHL talents. First line players are seldom available on the market or in trade.

do any flyers get the boot ? i don't think due to their contracts hextall can make anything happen.

With Bogosian off the board, I think Hextall's office had a couple more calls today.

I meant Bogosian and Myers off of the board.

Dallas Stars Acquire Goaltender Jhonas Enroth From The Buffalo Sabres In Exchange For Goaltender Anders Lindback And A Conditional Third Round Selection In The 2016 NHL Draft - NHL.com

So Nill dumps another asset, he better be extending Enroth. Ruff probably had something to do with it but why not wait until the offseason when they have so many other, more pressing holes to fill?

Lindback was so promising a few years ago.

With two G's going to UFA in July, TM was not going to wait past the deadline to get something in return for one of them. TM is on record for preferring larger goalies, and he picks up about 8" with Lindback. My hope is that at his age he can be an adequate stop-gap backup until BUF resolves their one deficiency in the prospect pool - the shortage of top G prospects.

(Say, Matty, the hockey team from Boston has a nice prospect with an entrenched starter. Subban? Just saying; you know that BUF's in a dealing mode.)

I suspect TM told both Neuvirth and Enroth that he was going to trade which ever one did not sign an extension. I do not know if Neuvirth's going to sign one (in fact, I do not know if he's even going to be offered an ext.), but this does knock one item off TM's to-do list.

BUF recently poached a couple of Scandinavian scouts away from the Red Wings*. It makes me wonder about their scouting report on Lindback.

(* I like the Wings so I will not tell them to suck ball sack, but I am tempted to. Or, did I already say that?)

You have no good reason to like the wings Dan.

I wonder if they're going to go with Neuvirth or not.

There will be plenty of goalies available this summer, better year than normal imo. Makes me scratch my head about Nill trading a 3rd for a back up right now.

It's a law in Buffalo that you must like the wings.

As for Detroit, I am a fan of every team that has a great fan base. That is unless a team has done something to piss me off. The hockey team from Philadelphia really pissed me off in 1975. Really pissed about that! The hockey team from Boston poached a coach, (the one and only Don Cherry), away from Rochester. I really have no good reason anymore for being pissed about that, but I've adjusted. It is a lot of fun to hate that team.

I'd say very nice things about the Hawks, but I do not want to appear as a brown noser.
