I want to qualify this: I think that it won't be a sellers' market because a lot of the traditional buyers will be hanging around wishing they could make some moves, but they can't due to cap restraints. This will, de facto, drive down demand and hence make it harder for sellers to find an eager partner. In a fashion, that's a buyers' market.

There's always going to be activity for rentals; particularly for veteran blueliners. It's just that I do not expect teams to be able to get a huge return for their merchandise in February.

BTW, I used to really like reading the NY Post Sports. I really liked the scoop battles with the Daily News. In the end, the NY Post is pretty useless except for some amusing - and occasionally accurate - reporting. A city doesn't know what it's missing when it does not have a rag or two.

i could see a couple of teams ask about hamhuis.

    Makes sense.

I think the Canadian dollar is still the biggest driver. The cap was projected to jump well over 80 by next year once the 13' season started. Also, gms have staffs that actually work instead of just talking to buddies. They're aware of the terrible average return of value at the deadline in deals and how that impacts their intermediate and long range plan if they're not a contender.

The Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Vincent Lecavalier and defenseman Luke Schenn from the hockey team from Philadelphia on Wednesday for forward Jordan Weal and a third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

Philly retains 50% for both Vinnie and Luke. Word is Vinnie will retire after the season and since he's an under-35 contract there will be no cap hit for Philly. Cat - your long nightmare is over!

This frees up about $3MM in cap space for PHL - but does not make them a better team. It does permit them to consider hockey trades however.

I read 3.5 but why cry about .5 mil.

and it does make them better. 2 less turds on the team. subtraction by subtraction is better than them on the team!

The Columbus Blue Jackets traded center Ryan Johansen to the Nashville Predators for defenseman Seth Jones on Wednesday.

    From; NHL.com...

"Trading Ryan Johansen was not easy, but improving our blue line has been a priority for us, and to acquire a player of Seth?s caliber, you have to give up a player of value," Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "We have been through a lot with [Ryan] over the years and he has been a very good player for us."

Johansen was benched in the third period against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 15, then was a healthy scratch two days later against the Arizona Coyotes under coach John Tortorella, who took over on Oct. 21.

Since the scratch, Johansen has four assists in seven games but has not scored a goal since Nov. 28 (15 games).

He is in the second season of a three-year, $12 million contract, according to war-on-ice.com, and can become a restricted free agent after next season.

"Unless the contract stipulates otherwise, everybody's tradeable," Blue Jackets president John Davidson told The Columbus Dispatch on Dec. 18. "That's hockey. It could be [Johansen] or it could be anybody else. If we feel it's the right deal, we make the deal."

Johansen, 23, has six goals and 20 assists in 38 games this season, after an NHL career high 71 points (26 goals) last season and a career-high 33 goals the season before. A first-round pick (No. 4) in the 2010 NHL Draft, Johansen has 79 goals and 114 assists.

?Ryan is a big, young center that can score, set up goals, win faceoffs,? Predators general manager David Poile said. ?He's a No. 1 center who is still growing his game and has the size (6-foot-3, 218 pounds) and skill that we have been looking for to match up with the best in the League.?

Jones, 21, was Nashville's first-round pick (No. 4) at the 2013 NHL Draft. He has one goal and 10 assists this season. In 199 games, Jones has 15 goals and 43 assists.

"Seth Jones is a big, skilled defenseman who has the potential to be an elite performer in this league for many years to come,? Kekalainen said. ?He has tremendous skill with the puck, sees the ice extremely well, and has the ability to shut down the opposition as well. We believe he will be an anchor on the blue line for our team for many years to come."

great trade for Philly. is a defenseman like Schenn really worth all that from LA?
    Will Vinny dress?

I really like this trade for Hextall.

Seth Jones for Ryan Johansson is awesome, Jones must be pissed he's joining Torts. Johansson- Ribiero- Neal would be such a dickhead line.

Lombardi makes a very nice gamble, depth and more depth.

  13. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I feel bad for Jones. I feel bad for Nashville fans too.

This feels like a "win now" move when they should be setting up to win later. Laviolette doesn't have a long shelf life and another coaching transition, which will probably be more defensively focused, than Lavy, is going to be really hard on Johansen.

Lose-lose trade for both teams in the intermediate term but I still like Jones long term.

Have a buddy who's an LAK fan and he's not happy about losing Weal. I guess he's one of those real gritty fan-favorite types. Still, good move by the Kings.

Poile amazes me with his ability to polish a turd and the ability to turn a gem into a turd. I'm not sure why he's cashing in a blue chip asset for a malcontent with questionable professionalism to boot.

Nashville operates differently than everybody else because of the market so it could be a combination of factors driving this trade. Jones may not have wanted to stay in Nashville too, or there were extension concerns. I just don't like this trade from the NAS side.

CLB is a big mess and they just dumped lime pudding and guano all over themselves.

    Schenn= JVR no way :-*

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

If a team is attached to the "grindy, gritty, heart and soul" guys that can't play above the bottom six, they should always have one foot out the door. 3 things should never be a prioriity for a team in my opinion. The first is an expensive backup goalie, the second is questionable skating on an "effort/hearty/grindy" guy, and the third would be a defensive wing.

I hope the plan is to replace Greene's minutes and workload with Schenn and to gamble on Vinnie having enough in the tank to absorb some of Carter's more abrasive workload in the spring.

It's just a shame Toronto hasn't done anything with the win in that trade.

i think Lombardi got swindled again.

this is where i should chime in that lombardi shouldn't have had the cap room available to make these deals. cheetah. and eff daly and the bean counters in nhl hq with the wishy-washy cap exemptions lombardi gets.
