personally i would hold off judgement on that. i don't think Leddy is as good as he played this season or moreover, as good as his stats say he played this season. same goes for that whole organization. I think the Hawks knew exactly what they had in him and came to the conclusion that he wasn't worth what his next deal was going to pay him. exact same circumstance in play for Johnny Boychuk. who's to say that either or both of those guys won't be the worst value in the league in a few years and at that point you can reassess the deal in a completely different light.

the return for Leddy was 3 prospects that could help out, one of which has already been reflipped. of course on the opposing side those prospects may never touch the NHL. wouldn't surprise me one bit if Anders Nilsson is manning the crease in Chicago in a year or two.

Morin still hasn't done anything, of course its easy to say the same thing about Tim Erixon who was later lost on waivers. Stan sure isn't shy to wheel and deal the prospects.

    From Buffalo site:
We could see an uptick in RFA offer sheets this year given the relatively high quality of RFA's, and based on the fact that several teams need to get up to the cap floor. I do not see many being offered more than $3,652,659 since that would require giving up a first. I do not know what Saad is actually worth this year, but based on potential I would certainly expect him to ask for more than that. That's why I would love it - not to say I am expecting this - if TM could find a way to pluck him off the Hawks' roster.

I forgot about Pokka and he could turn this into the Hawks favor in the long term. TJ Brennan will probably stick in TOR this year and was flipped for a career AHLer. Meanwhile, Leddy clearly has the most upside potential in the trade. But I do not rip the Hawks for making that trade since they had to move salary. When I speak about Chicago rarely losing on a trade I am really referring to when they trade an established major player, or import a player expected to produce well over the long haul. I also commend them for managing their organization, top to bottom, as well as any team in the NHL. Tweaking things, and being willing to lose a "small deal" for the greater good are just part of their thinking. Smart.

flyers got lucky with the hawks run to the finals. the flyers are in such bad shape, they need all the luck they can get so thanks chicago for the advanced pick.

To be clear; I think that if Saad is a former Hawk next season it will because Chicago traded him, and not through the RFA offer sheet route. In the process, the Hawks would get well-compensated.

the value of the compensatory draft picks are so dependent on the team that is sending the offer sheet.

Even though there was no offer sheet in the Kessel deal, they more or less just circumvented that process. Burke wound up giving Chiarelli more compensation than what Kessel would've brought back but the real value of the return was in the state of the Leafs at the time of that trade. Ive been arguing this point since the minute that deal went down, the Leafs were awful w/ major holes all over that roster.

Picking #2, #32, and #9 is so different than something like #15, #45, and #19. apples to oranges.

Yzerman has one more year and then he has to do some serious juggling including trading one or two of his goalies.
They are going to have to develop a few 4th liners and a couple dmen for the 5-8 spots or they will be making a big move this year or next imo. Their cap situation is going to be extremely tight after next season, should make for some interesting Lennie material over the course of the next 2 years.

  8. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

Sharp is going to be a very good but expensive acquisition for somebody.
His numbers are down, but he's an outstanding and versatile professional for a team looking to bring a young group of players up. There are a bunch of reasons he wears a letter instead of Campbell, Seabrook, Oduya, Hossa, etc. over the years.

You don't trade for intangibles, but it makes it easier to justify the cost of his tangibles.

I'm still not completely convinced that Sharp is gone. Seabrook might fetch a monster return or they could just blow up the depth completely and let this core get one more run next year.

  9. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I could see them absorbing a project like Raanta, Keumper, Lehner, or Markstrom.

I'm not sure a EC team would trade theirs to Buf.

  10. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    I trade Toews, for fun.

He's too big and physical to trust for more than 5 years imo, I think Kane is still going to produce for more than a decade.

  11. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    Saad could be a possibility.
They can afford and offersheet at this point and he plugs a top line hole at the wing. Their abundance of centers offers a opportunity too. I don't see it happening, but I think a reasonable scenario could be speculated unlike most trade potential trade partners for Saad.

The Leddy trade is dependent on Pokka. Not only would the Hawks have been unable to afford him in 16' in any realistic scenario, Quenneville has shown for 4 years that he doesn't trust him in the big moments. I'm a big leddy fan, and I think he'll have a very good career, but he had to go. While Leddy would have helped more than Roszival against Min and TB, I'm not sure he does anything that would have helped against ANA or NAS.

Morin just isn't good. He had 4 years to crack the roster and couldn't. I was disappointed with the Erixon return, but he just wasn't going to fetch more than a 5th at that point. Given the circumstances in Chicago, late and mid round picks aren't worth much to them right now as they'll be getting some back if they want them over the course of the next 15 months.

  12. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    Thank Gawd for that.

Inevitably, they'll get burned on one of them.

Plenty of fans will say Pirri or JHayes was a mistake. Some will say Dahlbeck's loss hurts the most.
In the context and timing of each, I'm a big fan of the decision to move all of them. None of those 3 were going to help land a championship this year and all would be struggling to stick to the roster next year. Nothing hurts more than losing guys to waivers when they had value the year before.

  13. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I agree that an offersheet is unlikely.

I like Leddy also. He's fast and skate with the best of them. The Islanders don't have him playing against opposing teams top lines for nothing. He also has a decent shot and can work on that to make it better. The Penguins will gladly take him off the Isles hands.....

Kane is definitely the better scorer of the 2 (Toews).......

Don't forget, Matty, I proposed the trade up for #3 already. I think it makes a great deal of sense for the hockey team from Boston to try to get who I think will be the best d-man to come through the draft in several years. (Even better than Risto!)

Teams are built from the blue line and then down the center. You can usually kick a C to the wings, and goalies have - like RB's in the NFL - become a bit of a commodity.

I confess to not watching your team too closely. Is BigFat #17? It would be hilarious to see him in the same org. with Darcy Regier. I'd love to watch their first team meeting together. DR: "Lucid, you POS" (an obligatory way of referring to him by anyone who is or ever was a Sabre) "you are the reason I got shit canned in Buffalo. Welcome to my doghouse". ML: no comment, just a shit-ass grin on his mug.

BTW, why would any team trade #3 for #14 and one declining vet? You would need at least a second plus an NHL-ready prospect or a couple of prospects with real promise. In addition to #14.

I think Lucic's value takes a hit because of Bickell. Not only is Bickell cheaper against the cap, he's arguably a more effective player for most possession based teams.

the hawks scouting dept seems like gold! they win the cup in 2010, keep the core, get rid of the rest and win again in 2012. they got guys no one has heard of playing and they all contribute. whatever picks they get - they make them count !

Their pipeline - of many fine attributes - is the most remarkable thing to me about the Hawks org. It's one thing for a team like BUF to have a top pipeline, but the Hawks have been winning SC's for the past several years and they have something like a top-five prospect pool. As I noted someplace, they can afford to "lose" on a few minor trades for the greater good of the org., and it is their pipeline that permits them to do that. That plus skirt with the cap yet always find a way to have a very competitive team on the ice.
