Not a Kadri fan... so Toronto wins that one. $0.02

Yeah, really feels like Colorado did Toronto a huge favor. You have to wonder whether or not Colorado was in panic mode after freeing up cap room and going after key free agents.

I just got out of the movie theatre, sounds like a good trade. The leafs had no D to start the year now that Hainsey and Zaitsev left.
Barrie is a UFA next year, so he might only be here one year until Sandin and Lilijergren get settled in. Kerfoot is a RFA, how does that fit into Marners deal?

Btw, Kadri is in an excellent deal, $4.5M for another 3 years. A player with grit that has already had two 30 goal seasons.

Avs messed up on this one, Barrie would've been perfect to keep around with Byram on an ELC for a few years.
Barrie will want over $7M next year and he'll easily walk and the leafs will be in the same position.

Muzzin and Barrie are UFA next season.

Peter Mrazek just doubled his pay with the Canes, two years at $3.1M aav.

Maybe the Leafs look at the 2019-20 season as the 'all-in' season. In that perspective, it might be better to have a 1 year rental on defense than a 3 year Kadri deal?

The defense is much improved over last year.

Panthers need defense help, but by losing out on Panarin, they really can't afford to trade away their top goal scorer from last year. The thought among Panthers faithful was that Hoffman would be out if they signed Panarin, but I hope that management isn't still set on one half of the plan without the other.

The only way I see trading Hoffman now as beneficial is if you plan on re-signing Dadonov (Hoffman and Dadonov's deals are both up end of this year), and you're confident that one of your prospects - Tippett, for example - can step up into a major scoring role right away (3rd line this year, 2nd next). I don't know that I'd be confident in either of those things.

I know we've talked about Pysyk before, Dan - I think it's very possible that he's a cap casualty, and they look to move him. Stralman likely takes his spot next to Matheson, and Brown / McCoshen / Weegar should make up the bottom pair (you've got to give those guys a chance to keep improving).

Edit: For what it's worth, Tallon said on the radio this morning they planned on adding more on D. So there's credibility to what you're hearing, Dan.

For the last few weeks, I thought has percolated: “Boy, the Buffalo Sabres are … kind of killing it, aren’t they?”

Sure, they might have paid too much for Jeff Skinner, but they kind of had to. After that, they landed Colin Miller for pennies on the dollar, took a flier on Jimmy Vesey, and signed Marcus Johansson to a very team-friendly contract. People also seemed pretty happy with their draft haul. It was tempting to write something praising this offseason for a nice bit of work, but there needed that one extra move to go from “scratching your chin in approval” to outright excitement.

Tuesday’s trade with the Chicago Blackhawks might just provide that extra push, as the Sabres added young defenseman Henri Jokiharju in exchange for troubled (but still interesting, maybe?) prospect Alex Nylander. According to the Sabres, that’s the extent of the trade. There are no picks or prospects to warp things, so this is as simple as it gets: Buffalo’s betting on the young defenseman, while Chicago’s betting that they can pull a Dylan Strome with Nylander by getting more out of the struggling winger than Buffalo ever enjoyed.

    Sabres receive: Henri Jokiharju

    Blackhawks receive: Alex Nylander

To reiterate, the two young skaters have similar contract situations, too, so this is basically a pure one-for-one trade.

Sorry, my bad... sometimes I forget to attribute the proper credit. That article was per NBC's PHT... By James O'Brien.

Like the trade for Chicago*. LOVE the trade for Buffalo. Henri Jokiharju is 15 months younger than Alexander Nylander and has already played about twice as many NHL games. I know it's not how many NHL games you have as a teenager that matters, but it does speak about the Jokers quicker development path so far. He adds another R shot to what is shaping up to be a very solid blueline corp for the Blue & Gold

I'd love to see see Alex develop into his true potential in Chicago, (*it's also times like this that I would really like the insights of our sorely missed hocked sage, hockeybob). I think there's a decent chance that he becomes the slick-skating top-six winger he was drafted to be. It just started to look like that was never going to happen in Buffalo. I will not kick if Nylander becomes an all-star, first because that probably would not have happened for him in Buffalo. More importantly, Buffalo could have a very intimidating top pair of Dahlin & Joker for the next 12-15 years!

Buffalo wins this trade, you don't want to deal with the Nylanders come RFA time.

Sean Butkes sister just gave me a couple of beers. Her brother lives in Arizona, doing good.
