Fletcher has already made 3 quick trades. Hayes, Niskanen and now Braun. Trades for the sake of trades?

The ultimate would be if they lose Braun in the expansion draft, maybe they leave him unprotected. The Sharks needed the cap relief and didn't retain a penny

  3. I'm thinking the Canucks are going to lose Edler to FA.

That's what I was thinking. Very close in terms of compensation traded.

That's a hot topic on Sabres boards right now - with about 75% in the "keep him" camp. Those advocating keeping him usually base that on some variation on this theme: Risto has rare attributes that are very hard to find he's big and exceptionally strong. Especially for playoff hockey - where D and physicality can win Cups - that is not something to give away easily. (Of course he has a total of 0 career playoff games, but as fans, we intend for that to change.)
Those that say move him usually cite his very poor analytics.
I think Risto was rushed to the NHL by an overly-dependent team, (i.e., they needed someone to play D). Because he's so strong he was thrust into huge minutes. I think that the end result is that he never really developed the way you want for a true top-D, and is forever a decent top-four, but not necessarily a lot more than that.

He's signed for three more years at $5.4MM and that's looking extremely attractive to a lot of teams these days. I can see why a lot of teams have been asking about him, and therefore why he's thrown into a lot of rumors. Word is, however, that the Sabres were asking coaching candidates about their plan to "fix" Risto. I doubt they'd devote that much energy if they were intent on moving him.

I think the chances of him being dealt this summer is probably around 20% or less - it would have to be a "knock your socks off" offer for Botterill to bite at this time. I think a team would have to overpay right now - a top-six F just to get the conversation started. While Buffalo has the makings of a real nice D, I don't think they're ready to lose the guy that has been playing 25 minutes. Maybe at the deadline, but not now.

    That's what I think.

Tyler Meyers is a UFA in July, I'm thinking $6.5M.

Trouba wasn't coming back to the Jets, his fiancee couldn't practice medicine in Canada.

Bummer. I think a top 2 / 4 Dman is Florida's top priority, so sorry to hear that the percentages are that low. Very sincerely appreciated for the candid thoughts, though. Save me a lot of time and worry, and added the element of maybe some pleasant surprise down the road.

For what it's worth, Tallon prizes his draft picks so highly, I don't think they trade anything more than a 3rd round pick. and although the team has a wealth of young forwards, if they're serious about winning within the next two to three years, I don't think they can afford to trade a top-six guy without acquiring one to replace him. The common conspiracy theory amongst Florida fans is that they'll sign Panarin and trade Hoffman or another top winger. We'll see.

Dline, I expressed my opinion. In no way am I piped into the Sabres thought process.

I know Hoffman is a piece that would look good in blue & gold. I don't think that Botterill is interested in accumulating futures. I think he thinks it is imperative for the team to show marked improvement this season. We cannot waste too many more of Eichel's years, and have Dahlin accustomed to losing.

At the same time, I don't think he wants to mortgage the future either. The key pieces coming into Buffalo this summer will be on the right side of 26 years old. Character matters a lot to Terry & Kim Pegula. I personally do not think Hoffman is a problem (it was his girlfriend, after all, that got him run out of OTT), but that could be a deterrent.

The Sabres need a 2C this year, but they might not look for a long term answer at that spot since Casey Mittlestadt should be ready after another season.

is he worth a late 1st?

  15. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

have no idea. id trade him for that personally though. he's really good when he's right but he's the highest paid player on the team and i think his game is primed to fall off a cliff in a couple years.

  16. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

I think Edmonton would happily take a late 1st for Puljujarvi. He's not doing much for them, and if he's serious about wanting out or going overseas, they might be fine with sending him away, even having been a #4 pick just a few years ago. Trouba netted a mid-first and a bottom / second pair Dman. Puljujarvi has nowhere near Trouba's value, just based on performance. If a team offered a 20-31 pick to Edmonton, I think they'd probably end up taking it. But that's just me.
