It's worth talking hockey with you, Dan. Hope all's well.

Petro was protected over Marchessault, but the reasons were several fold (this is not in defense of the move - I was so pissed when it happened, my ticket rep had to convince me to re-up my tickets for the season). First, the team's defensive roster is entirely bare, thanks to Tallon's drafting / building of talent pool. So Petro was a warm body where they didn't have many. But that pales in comparison to the motivation that was getting salary off the books - Marchy was left unprotected so that Vegas had extra incentive to take Smith's contract. In addition, the team was unlikely to pay Marchy what he'd want, when his contract came up shortly thereafter. It's terrible reasoning, no fucking doubt, but that's really what the motivating factor was.

That said, as much as I hated everything about it, we did end up with Dadonov and Hoffman, which has been extremely nice. Problem is, Petro has always been total garbage, as a defenseman.

For the Oilers not only to take Petrovic, but to give us anything for him... that's an absolute coup. The guy is maybe the dumbest player I've ever seen on the ice, and is phenomenal at playing the body well after his man has moved the puck. I don't think Wideman is any real upgrade, but getting anything more than a bologna sandwich in exchange for Petrovic is a steal.

The Leafs giving anything to get Hutchinson is a pure desperation move for a team with little in the cupboard, and potentially needing it to make a run. He was beyond abysmal, this year - both in the bigs and the minors. The Panthers' two goalie prospects have been playing well this year, so Hutchinson wasn't due anything other than a new set of team clothes, for the year. That we got something in return is good news, and he won't be missed. I'm sure Toronto knows that if they need to use him, they're already in trouble. That said, goalies are always finicky - if they get a good game or two out of him when they need it, they'll have gotten their money's worth, and it's always possible he steps up for a stint.

dline, I think your post highlights the strength of L4S. This site brings together fans from all over the continent, and that provides an opportunity for us to gain the insights of local fans.

There is always nuance to a situation and the Panthers' strategy at the Vegas draft was, uhmmm, a head scratcher. If I were a Panthers fan I'd be mighty pissed. But at least I now understand it better.

i read Jeff Carter loves LA so any trade out of LA and he said he would retire. Ouch.

Jeff Carter is an interesting case. We'd assume that the LAK would want to move a vet like him given their status this season. He's not going to help them in the playoffs since they're a virtual lock to be a lottery team, but he would appeal a lot to a team with postseason aspirations. The problem is he'd be a huge risk to retire before the end of his current contract; if that were to happen then the LAK would be on the hook for a very hefty recapture penalty. It's just as effective as an iron-clad NTC. If the LAK could get his assurance that he would not retire then they could move him. But, he's on record for saying he wants to stay in LA (can't blame him for that), and I don't think they can give him anything in return for promising to play out the current contract.

    I'd strike him from my team's wish-list.

it's funny he loves LA but has a shore house he still visits in Sea Isle City, NJ. He even brought the Cup there once. It's a big party town for college kids. Surprised he's not in Stone Harbor or Margate, which is less kids and big money.

I would drive Voracek and Ghost to the airport right now. Take on Sanheim, Haag, and anyone else you wanted !

  14. skinny123 Guest

Good luck with Voracek, wow, who was the brain surgeon behind that deal?

  15. Catfish Guest

one idiot or the other ! holmgren or hextall. he was coming off a 90+ pt season and cashed in i believe.

he had a solid pt and assist season last year. i think he had over 80 pts. he's worth something in a trade. with the right linemates he could be a monster up top.

  16. skinny123 Guest

He's 29 and looks like he just might decline into a 0.7 PPG vet with 5 and a half years left on a $8.25M deal.

This reminds me of the nylander situation, put him on the #1 line with goal scorers and he gets to pad his assist total, overrated.
This is a game where goals are everything, if his best was 22 goals when he was 23, doesn't look good.

I say the flyers can't trade him unless they cover part of the deal.

they have a ton of open cap $$ left. done. haha. he could bring back some value and more than simmonds. gotta find the right buyer and not just give them away on the cheap.

6 years left, that's a killer, what would a team want to give up for that kind of term? You put him on a 2nd or 3rd line and he's getting 15-20 goals a year and 45 pts. No way he lasts until 35 with the speedsters coming out of the draft at entry level money.

Just trying to understand what the thinking was when they put this deal together.
They had an 8 year sample size to work with. His highest goal total was 23, he never once averaged a point a game, although he came close with 81 in 82 games two years before that. He just had a 55 point season.

What leverage did he have to get 8 yrs/$8.25 per?
He did get 85 pts last year, mainly assists, no way he deserved this deal. Sometimes you just have to cut bait and move on.
