A lot of people expected VGK to take more that the required 3 G's, (they could have taken up to 7). Instead Vegas loaded up on D. That leaves several goalies available for trade to needy teams.

Saad going back to Chicago for Paranin and other pieces to round things out. Rumors that CBJ will send the Hawks a goalie; they're a little thin in net after moving Darling.

Hate to see breadman go but getting Saad back after losing Hossa is a big move for the Hawks.

They were going to take the 4th from Buffalo until the Sabres gave them a late pick to take option 1b instead.

Yeah, the Sabres were close to losing Ullmark, and with the news today* that would have made them very thin at G. Some fans wanted Buffalo to protect Ullmark and expose Lehner; some fans are idiots.

(*) Cal Peterson, Notre Dame, confirmed what we pretty much already knew. He's going to go to UFA after August 15th and will not be signing with the Sabres. You never know with these young goalies. A couple of years ago M. O'Connor was all that and after Ottawa signed him they were more comfortable moving Lehner. It looks like he's reached his ceiling in the AHL.

    NYI-CGY trade is official. It's Hamonic and the Islanders' 4th in 2019 or 2020 for Calgary's 1st and 2nd in 2018 and a 2nd in 2019 or 2020.

    J. Pominville and M. Scandella traded from the Wild to the Sabres for T. Ennis and M. Foligno. MIN gets a 3rd and BUF gets a 4th, both in '18.

As a Sabres fan my initial reaction is great. I like both Ennis & Foligno tremendously for their grit and heart, but both were already replaced on the roster. Pominville still has something in the tank and also represents a fitting bookend to recent Sabres history. His trade to MIN marked the beginning of the teardown and tank. This trade, could in due time, be recognized as the one that put them in playoff contention.

Johann Larsson plays essentially the same role as Foligno, but is younger and a bit cheaper. This trade gives a lot of cap relief to MIN and the Wild more or less had to move a d-man.

But why I love this trade is that Scandella gives a huge boost to Buffalo's defense. The rest of the trade is just spare parts.

I really do not care for Pom, Scandella will be solid, unlike some trash you high balled from Vancouver.

Pittsburgh trade rumors are heating up again. I'm reading that the Penz are sniffing around on Matt Duchene and Jordan Staal. Via rumors, Daniel Sprong is the possible bait. Duchene would be the better fit in the City of Champions. Both call for $6M/yr, but MD is younger (26/29). The biggest difference, and most interesting element from a GM perspective, would be the fact that Duchene has 2 years left on his current deal, where Staal is locked up until 2022-3. Jordan Staal's situation is a hefty cap hit (especially for a 3rd line center) and would be a heavier shackle to say the least. Remember back in the day, Staal wanted more money than the Penz were willing to part with, thus the deal that sent him to the Canes in the first place. Although he is still a really good hockey player, he's definitely not worth $6M/yr. If this rumor has legs and plays out, I hope the Penz land Matt Duchene and not Jordan Staal. Otherwise, keep Sprong.

Trade: Panthers send Jason Demers to Coyotes for Jamie McGinn

The Florida Panthers continue to hit the “reset” button on their brief analytics era now that GM Dale Tallon is fully back in charge. Sometimes that means making some dramatic moves.

The Arizona Coyotes certainly seem analytics-leaning, too, so it makes sense that they’ll reportedly be the new home for defenseman Jason Demers. The Panthers recently confirmed that they will receive Jamie McGinn in the trade.
