I thought the NHL dropped that rule that allowed teams to get compensated for former coaches.

It looks like a done deal now.

The Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday received the Columbus Blue Jackets? second-round pick in this year?s draft as compensation for Columbus hiring John Tortorella in October of 2015, according to multiple reports.

At the time Tortorella was hired in Columbus, he was still under contract to the Canucks, despite being fired after one tumultuous season in Vancouver. Hence the compensation of a second-round pick in, at the time, one of three drafts between 2016, 2017 or 2018, per Sportsnet.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, that pick to Vancouver is the 55th overall selection this year. Good news for the rebuilding Canucks, who now have a pair of second-round picks, and six picks in the first four rounds of the draft.
Vancouver currently has the fifth overall pick.

I guess because he was still under contract with the Canucks they could make this deal.

I forgot that it was 2015. The NHL has changed the rules going forward: teams that hire a coach that had been fired, but was still under contract with another club, will not have to compensate the original team.

This actually helped the original team since they no longer had to pay someone they had fired.

The Sabres gave the Pens a third for Bylsma. As much as I dislike Torts, at least it looks like the Jackets got someone worth paying.

yeah, torts was signed for more years. he is the trivia question of who last received compensation for getting fired.

Kings sign forward Imama after Tampa Bay trade...

The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward Bokondji Imama to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Kings reached the deal Thursday, a few hours before the signing deadline for unsigned draft choices.

Los Angeles acquired the rights to Imama on Wednesday from Tampa Bay, which couldn't reach an agreement with its sixth-round pick in the 2015 draft. The Kings will give a seventh-round pick in next year's draft to the Lightning.

Imama, from Montreal, scored a team-leading 41 goals in 66 games for Saint John in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. The physical power forward also had 105 penalty minutes. (Sports Net)

would love to see Ovechkin play in Montreal, Cload will lose his marbles. that seems like an inevitable catastrophe if it happened.
I bet that OV would score a bunch in LV because he'd have no other responsibilities. Dallas would be fun too. Seguin, Benn, Spezza, and OV.

I'd love a Duncan Keith and Marion Hossa for Ovechkin, a 2nd and Christian Djoos.

Kylington, Bennett and 2 #1s, Washington should take that and run.
Kinda hard to believe the rumor mill out of Russia.

Deal was off after it was discovered they weren't getting the type of compensation they were expecting. It wasn't Russian Vodka but American passing off as one.

wow, this is a pretty nice trade all around. Habs get their local boy, no pressure at all, and also this should help leverage against Radulov a bit.
Yzerman unloads his malcontent for a cost controlled possible future top 4. Russians in TB seem to work out.

condition of picks being Sergachev playing in 40+ games this season.

I'm not sure about this one, Drouin is ok, french-Canadian to boot, but Sergachev is a dman much needed, especially when Markov's gone.

  18. rediiis Guest

Markov is gone, umm he is old as redwoods.
    Drouin is a coach killer.
    I'd give this a TB win. 6/4

Markov will be back on a cap friendly deal, 36 pts is still productive.
