I think this buys the LAK some eDraft insurance. Bishop is a shitload more likely to be taken vs. their previous alternative of leaving Budaj exposed. In fact, Bishop would be one of the most attractive G's available to Vegas. If Vegas takes Bishop that means that the rest of their roster is safe. Bishop gives the Kings a much higher likelihood of retaining the F's they cannot afford to protect.

Otherwise, the Bishop vs. Budaj debate, i.e., who would you rather have as a back? up hardly needs to be discussed. I think it was a good trade, given overall circumstances, by both clubs. I'm certainly not going to lambaste either team; the final outcome (who won the trade?) may never be known. But if Bishop is picked off the LAK roster in June then I think they'll be delighted.

I have already cancelled all appointments and ordered my kids not to be sick tomorrow so I can enjoy an underwhelming trade deadline...again.

    Some comps to Hanzal:

I'm trying to avoid dmen and NON first line types.

    Edmonton Oilers acquire:
    d Colton Teubert
    2011 1st-round pick
    2012 3rd-round pick

For big bodied scoring win Penner in 2011. Penner was more of a specialty role player (at the time), where as Hanzal is an all around 2nd line player imo.

    Toronto Maple Leafs acquire:
    2011 1st-round pick
    2011 3rd-round pick
for Kris Versteeg in 2011. At the time Versteeg was more a 2 way player, not the same game, but a little closer to Hanzal's relative value imo.

    Ottawa Senators acquire:
    2011 1st-round pick
Conditional 2012 draft pick for Mike Fisher to the Preds in 2011 Very good comp imo. Limited offensive upside, but versatile depth all around center.

Gaustad and a 4th for a 1st in 2012. He was a straight 3rd line ceiling player at the time.

Clowe to the Rags for 2nds and a 3rd

    [del]Iginla to Boston
    [/del] *CRAZY*

Vermette for Dahlbeck (very strong prospect at the time) and a first in 2015.

Ladd + contracts for a 1st and 3rd last year.

This could be part of it, but I completely agree that the move was made with the expansion draft in mind.

For example, Lombardi may acquire a number 4 or 5 dman and another middle 6 wing this summer. They would come from a team looking to get anything for a player they feel likely to lose. Dean might be setting up to buy low on numerous players knowing that he'll lose one.

I'm guessing here, but I expect one or two gms to make 3 or 4 acquisitions prior to the expansion draft with this non conventional approach in mind. Bishop may be the first part.

The pressing question for this week:

Which team will win the Josh Gorges sweepstake?!

  6. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

I thought there would have a few more minor/AHL type trades by now. We've seen a few, but only a handful of gms have worked to slot their affiliates better.

    Arizona Coyotes

    Minnesota Wild
    Acquire:
    Future considerations...

Forward Alexandre Burrows was traded to the Ottawa Senators from the Vancouver Canucks for forward prospect Jonathan Dahlen.

Defenseman Jordie Benn was traded to the Canadiens by the Stars for Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round pick.

I'm hearing whispers on Kunitz/Fleury/Maata/Pouliot and the Avs.

    Really Bergevin?
Jordie Benn. Why has Nill kept him around for so long and why would he separate him from his brother now?

Burrows as a Senaturd sounds fantastic.

Boyle to the Leafs... it's offishal. Will was on that one earlier.

  14. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

Wow, I really thought Boyle was going to get a bigger return. All 3 2nds for Toronto are likely going to be from playoff teams. Guess the market wasn't that big or dried up really quick because of the other moves. I'm thinking the Froese contract slot was part of what took some of the value away for Yzerman. Rough deadline for TB. I knew things were going to catch up to Stevie, but I would have expected this. Bishop and Boyle for a one dimensional depth dman, a late 2nd, and bleh.

Pulkinnen to AZ for future considerations....hmmm, after he cleared waivers.

Eklund and Lawton are saying the Penz, Caps and Blue Skirts are in the running for Shattenkirk. That probably means those are the 3 places he will NOT go.
    -F5

Honestly, after Pittsburgh landed Hainsey, I just don't see the need.

  17. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

McKenzie seems to see SHattenkirk in NYR because of the movement clause. If that is his final destination, Armstrong and Gorton will probably play chicken tomorrow.

    Should be interesting.

Rutherford still has room to make a move, I can't imagine he's going to sit back completely.

This just in from WDIV in Detroit:
Darren Dreger reports that "3-4 teams" are looking at Sheahan, including the Maple Leafs.

  19. firehalo Guest

Bob, do you think the Wild paid too much for Hanzal? I'm seeing a lot of that today.

Back to the Shattenkirk rumors: As it stands right now, the Craps have $2.5M in cap space available. That means STL would have to retain some of that salary or WSH would need to move a somewhat sizeable fish to make that deal happen.
