The Kings are only 3 points back of the Blues and Quick has health concerns. Bishop makes sense in my opinion.

Doan is such a douche, bitching about this deal, a load of good picks for a 3rd line center. Hey Doan, you're on the wrong side of 40 with your 5 goals, maybe it's time they ship your ass out, dbag!
This idiot should understand it's a business where you always have to keep thinking of the future especially when today sucks goats balls.

why would TB move Bishop for peanuts? so now LA has the goaltending insurance that TB used to have..........is this just so that Vasilevsky can now move forward as the #1? imagine he gets injured in the next couple of weeks.

im w/ ya skinny, Doan should shut his yapper. he's on an awful team that is clearly rebuilding.

  5. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

Bishop is not the future, TB's roster is fucked (credit to Yzerman for recognizing that), and teams are more interested in using assets, especially the cap space, to plug multiple holes rather than a big gamble in net imo.

It doesn't help that there are so many decent goalie options floating around right now.
The market was just not there, so they had to sell low just to get anything. Better than losing him as a UFA.

  6. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

but its like they didnt get anything.
give up Bishop and a 5th for Budaj, some jabroni and a 7th?
downgrade on the pick and the talent in net.
i get the cap space, does this mean TB has more moves to come?
otherwise have the insurance for this year and let him walk.

if this is all Bishop can fetch I wonder about MAF. although, MAF is under contract.

  7. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

in fairness, perhaps Erik Cernak isnt some jabroni. perhaps.
[del]LA has now traded him twice.[/del]

*not true, i read that wrong. the pick itself was traded twice before the LA used it

People shouldn't look at Hanzal's offensive production, that's not why he's there. He's much better type of player to have as depth up the middle in a 7 game series than the type you want to carry a load through the regular season. He's going to wear some players down..and when they adjust to him, he's going to take pressure off of his line defensively and open up offensive options imo.

He's going to the bottom 6 on that roster, so he'll have matchup advantages imo.

  9. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

He cleared it up, he's going for it, this has little to do with the future as just about everybody expected.

I wonder if he'll play with Koivu and Staal, that would be a big rugged line with skill.

    Brian Burke just soiled himself

This type of player isn't worth that type of price. There's a point as a gm where you have to just walk away, you could find a 3rd line checker for much cheaper, like a 2nd rounder.

It's telling that he has this type of mindset, it portrays a possible country club atmosphere, probably golfing buddies. This is a big reason why some players would choose to play in arizona rather than toronto, where you're constantly under scrutiny by the media.

I think Cernak is Yser's save-this-trade player; he's a good prospect. Given the Bolts' cap structure and the looming eDraft, there was no way they could retain Bishop under any circumstance. As Bob noted, the G market is very soft. I'm a little surprised he did not try to string this out for a few days since Bishop was #1 or #2 in this soft G group.

Now that he's gone, this can open up the market for more G trades.

Hanzal has been in a top 6 role most of his career. Even if Min gets knocked out in the first round, the pick is outsite of the top 20 right now. This is really similar to Vermette, except Hanzal is a better and bigger overall player.

I think the value of late firsts is overblown and some drafts have more than half the 2nd rounders changing hands. Looking at next year vs this year, I the conference, especially the division, is going to be much more difficult next year.

  15. hockeybob Hall-of-Fame Blackhawks

    I had this same thought.
The more I look at it the more I think it had to do with Yzerman worrying about demand and cap dollars being available to take the contract on.

I love knocking Yzerman, but I'm going to give him credit on the timing (for this year). After years of watching more gms eat expiring contracts instead of cashing them in, I think Yzerman did the right thing. Too many trade pieces on the board and too many b/u goalies floating around. As bad as the season has been, Bishop has kept them from losing the entire season already, and know he gets a cheap bottom pair shutdown option.

After hanging on to Bishop for each of the last two years (which was a mistake imo), I thought he played it out about as well as it could have been this year.

Who knows? Yzerman stopped taking my calls when I kept cranking him about Boucher.

Draft schmaft was a famous saying his dad used to say 25 years ago.

He's been a top 6 on the yotes, he's never hit 20 goals once in his career. He's a good face-off guy with size, he hasn't really had that impressive +/- numbers career wise(not sure how much weight to put into that).

He'll help, and the wild want to win now. If you had to value a player on how many picks he's worth. I wouldn't value him at a late first plus a second and another pick as well.

LAK is 24th in team offense and 5th in team defense. I'm thinking they have more pressing needs than acquiring Bishop. Budaj's numbers have been pretty good this year.

Late first in 2017 = mid-to-late second in most draft classes.

Rather than looking at the possible future contributions of the asset traded away, I would look at it from a probability perspective. The chances that a first round pick plays in the NHL are high - over 80%. This drops off to around 50% for a second round pick. These are historical averages. It has to be weighed with the particular draft class in mind, e.g., a 2015 late second has about an 80% chance given the strength of that class.

A late 2017 first may have only slightly better than a 50% chance; therefore the Wild are not giving up as much as it would first seem.

They're clearly in a win-now mode and I think this is just a table setter for what they plan before Wednesday.

Budaj just had a recent stretch where he gave up 19 goals in 5 games... that couldn't have helped in the decision making. Budaj also has extremely limited playoff experience (0-2) also and if the Kings were to make the playoffs, I think they would rather roll with a Quick and Bishop tandem over Budaj... just my thoughts.

But your right about the lack of offense... maybe they address that too.

I don't disagree that a move involving upcoming picks isn't the way to go. I'm talking about placing a value on a player and using picks as a currency and where you draw the line.

How many picks is a 30 goal ufa worth? It's about setting unrealistic precedent.
