The Tampa Bay Lightning have traded goaltender Ben Bishop and a fifth round pick in the 2017 draft to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for goaltender Peter Budaj, defenceman Erik Cernak, a 7th round pick in the 2017 NHL draft and a conditional pick in the same draft.

i was hoping for some miller time, although i think bishop is a superior goalie.

That's not a bad backup to quick, I wonder if the kings sign him.

  7. rediiis Guest

quick is a midget compared to bishop. good move by the kings.

can somebody explain the logic of getting bishop

Kings look at this as insurance in case quick's groin issues come back, they still need to make the playoffs though.

FWIW, [del]if[/del] when the Buffalo Sabres start to sell, and when picks go to them, I hope they load up on 2018 picks rather than 2017.

In fact, I am advocating that the Sabres package their 2017 first with some F's (Foligno, Girgensons, Larsson, and or Carrier) for D.

There will be some '17 picks that'll make their team in Oct. But I do not think any of them will impact their team the way we've seen some in recent years. The 2017 lacks star power at the top end, and general depth throughout the rounds.

Wow, the Wild are flirting with future organizational weakness with their proclivity for moving picks. I think they're gonna have to wait until the 3rd for their first selection in Chicago.

If they win it all this year, (and I think they're a strong contender) then this will not matter. Otherwise, I hope the fine folks in Des Moines do not mind lousy hockey.

    stevie y gets something, nice

Budaj was pretty good insurance so far without costing anything. Just a lateral move imo.

Budaj has been garbage the last several weeks. Bishop is definitely an upgrade, and they only had to give a 7th round pick to get him. Easy move. If they intend to make any noise, having Bishop helps them.

I can't imagine TB is thrilled with the return for a number 1. I'm not a Bishop fan, but he is a good established 1G. TB didn't do a heck of a lot to improve their situation, I wonder what the market was offering for Bishop last summer.

I think the Hanzal trade isn't going to end well for MIN. He is one of the better players likely to be traded and the cost of late early picks is completely justified imo. Better to get the top player as opposed to another team in the conference too. STL is a bit down, Chicago is leaning on many fringe/rookie NHL players, and the rest of the division is up and down. I don't like Hanzal, but I do like the trade for MIN. By the time those picks matter, Parise, Staal, Suter, and Koivu will be on their twilight skates...if they're even still on the ice.

Hanzal could help, besides being 6"6, a career 15 goal scorer that gets injured often. I get that the 1st will be a late one and the wild are in win now mode, but you don't HAVE to do a deal like this.

I'm wondering if bishop would be up for grabs in the expansion draft.
