The Ryan Murray Thread (17' season injuries)

That's why I would want to see them rushing toward the point man rather than stand 10 feet back and absorb the shot at a more optimal speed.
Mind you , the JVR injury looks like bad luck. The Leafs lost Rielly and Muzzin that way, even Marner earlier in the year.

Doing the flamingo from 10-15 feet back is the worst one.

the problem with not blocking the shot is that you make it so much harder for the goalie by blocking his view. you have to go out in the shooting lane first and then get out to the point or d or whoever is shooting.

That is the delima, but its too bad something else couldn't be drawn up defensive scheme wise. On the flip side... a lot of good shot-blockers arnt doing it with a gun pointed at them either... its all in for the team.

If you're a bottom six player earning under $2M, you should be blocking shots. You're the most replaceable of players on the team.

If I'm going to spend $10M of the cap toward bottom six guys, I'll choose six that are willing to block shots.
I wouldn't want my $6M to $11M guys blocking shots.

I want everyone blocking shots. One team mindset.

I'll put it this way, I wouldn't want to see Marner, Matthews or Tavares losing significant time because they blocked a shot on the PK.
I would rather sign a PK specualist for $1,5M, and he sure as hell be blocking as many shots as possible.

Then I’d say they shouldn’t be on the pk

No, but they like to put Marner on the PK, which already cost him games.

I'm all for going out there and finding the best checkers possible for under $2M each.

    Samsonov goes down...

If Braden Holtby wants to improve his free-agent stock, here’s his chance. Washington Capitals GM Brian McLellan told reporters Friday including Samantha Pell of the Washington Post that Ilya Samsonov suffered an off-ice injury in Russia during the pause and failed his physical after returning to North America. Pell tweets that Samsonov “should be good to go for the start of next season.”

An injury to Samsonov makes a tough decision for the team as to who will start in their round-robin. Holtby obviously has the experience and was the goaltender who helped carry the team to a Stanley Cup in 2018, but is also coming off his worst season as a professional. The 30-year old goaltender posted just an .897 save percentage in 48 appearances, seeing his goals-against average balloon to 3.11.

That kind of performance paled in comparison to the .913 save percentage that Samsonov recorded in his first year in the NHL, when he went 16-6-2 in 26 appearances. The 23-year-old netminder was simply better than Holtby and likely would have pushed for a chance to take the net in the playoffs.

This week in their exhibition game, the Capitals had Vitek Vanacek serve as the backup for Holtby but they also have Pheonix Copley who played 27 games for them in 2018-19. They’ll have options should Holtby struggle, but not ones quite as exciting as Samsonov.

Holtby kinda lucky that the kid went down. Big money riding on the line with him this postseason, probably more than any other player in the bubble.

Gustav Nyquist is expected to miss the start of the season for the Columbus Blue Jackets after having surgery to repair a labral tear in his left shoulder on Tuesday.

The expected recovery time is 5-6 months, meaning Nyquist would likely be out at least three months if the NHL season starts as planned on Jan. 1, 2021.

"This was a chronic issue that Gus has been dealing with for a number of seasons," Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. "He has been able to perform at a high level, but a cyst in the area developed over time that has inhibited his ability to continue to do so. As a result, surgery was the best course of action and we look forward to having him back at full strength this season."

Nyquist scored 42 points (15 goals, 27 assists) in 70 games with the Blue Jackets last season after signing a four-year contract with them on July 1, 2019. He had two assists in 10 postseason games.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round (No. 121) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Nyquist has scored 348 points (146 goals, 202 assists) in 570 regular-season games with the Red Wings, San Jose Sharks and Blue Jackets, and 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) in 65 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Vanacek could be the #2, but if they go FA there are a few names to toss around. Craig Anderson, Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller and John Gibson are all out there. I'd guess Anderson if i had too.

There is a kid in the minors named, Vitek who the coach's are high on also, so im not real sure the goaltending is going to be a real tough issue for the Caps.
