Schneider may miss start of season for Devils
Goalie recovering from hip surgery in May...

NEWARK, N.J. -- Cory Schneider may not be ready to start the season for the New Jersey Devils season following hip surgery.

The 32-year-old goalie, who had surgery for torn cartilage in his left hip May 1, was given a five-month recovery period and remains on that timetable. That would take him to Oct. 1; the Devils open the season Oct. 6 against the Edmonton Oilers in Sweden.

"Whether it's September or October, we are not going to rush Cory," Devils general manager Ray Shero said at development camp Wednesday. "We have Keith Kinkaid, and that's why we re-signed Eddie Lack (to a one-year contract worth $650,000 on June 30). We'll get more updates as we move along in the summer."

Forwards Taylor Hall and Nico Hischier should be ready for camp.

Hall, who won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, had surgery for torn ligaments in his left hand April 30 and is training in Toronto. Hischier, who had his left wrist immobilized for four weeks in May because of an injury that kept him out of the 2018 IIHF World Championship for Switzerland, is also working out. (NHL.com)

if i was a GM looking to solidify the net Id take a run at Schneider.
his value is low right now, its the time to strike. he is also about to have his 2nd hip surgery i believe, less than ideal.

Tarasenko hopes to be ready for Blues training camp
St. Louis forward eyes big season in return from shoulder surgery...

CHICAGO -- Vladimir Tarasenko said he feels good after offseason shoulder surgery, and the 26-year-old St. Louis Blues forward hopes to be ready for the opening of training camp on Thursday.

Tarasenko was injured in a collision with Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog in each team's regular-season finale on April 7, and had surgery four days later. Tarasenko began skating in early August in St. Louis, and said he has been able to shoot for several weeks.

"It's fine now. I can do almost everything on it," Tarasenko said of his shoulder during the NHL Player Media Tour on Friday. "It's been a long summer, but I feel good now."

Tarasenko had 66 points (33 goals, 33 assists) in 80 games with the Blues last season. Despite leading St. Louis in goals for the fourth consecutive season and being second on the Blues in points (behind center Brayden Schenn's 70), Tarasenko said he needs to improve this season.

"I can do better, I need to do better," he said. "If you stop improving, there are always guys practicing harder and there are new guys in the League, younger guys.

"When you set a standard once, you need to try to stay there. I believe I can do better and do more. That's what I'm looking forward to doing [this season]. People have high expectations with me and I want to prove they're right and I want to help my team as much as I can to win the [Stanley] Cup." (NHL.com)

Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown is out indefinitely after he broke his finger in the second period of a 3-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.

Brown was projected to skate on the Kings' first line with Ilya Kovalchuk and Anze Kopitar. He had 61 points (28 goals, 33 assists) in 81 games last season.

Still no definitive update, but Florida's D-men Yandle and Kiselevich left in the first period last night, and are in doubt for the season opener. Kiselevich took a slapshot to the face and left the ice immediately - confirmed 40 stitches, but no word on extent of fractures, etc. Scary stuff. Yandle took a hard hit on the boards and went down wrong - hopefully it's just a tweak, and he's fine for the opener.

Ekblad is expected to be back for the home opener, as they've been resting him for the last few days. Unlike the two names above, he was there at the stadium signing autographs today for the team's season ticket holder appreciation day.

Yandle has been back on the ice, and should be ready to play for the season opener. Keeping his consecutive games streak alive.

Bogdan Kiselevich, the KHL D-man that the Panthers signed in the offseason, had his jaw broken from a slapshot to the face. They surgically reconnected the bones via a plate to his face, and he's back on the ice this week wearing a cage on his helmet. Coach Boughner said that, when they were stitching him up on the night of the injury, he was asking if they'd greenlight him to go back out and play. So... not quite as tough as me, but close.

This is why the Florida Panthers signed James Reimer to the deal that they did in 2016. The five-year, $17M contract handed to the goaltender meant that the team had adequate coverage should an aging Roberto Luongo go down with injury.

    And here we are. Again.

Panthers head coach Bob Boughner announced on Monday that the 39-year-old Luongo will miss the next 2-4 weeks with a Grade 1 MCL strain in his knee suffered during Saturday night’s loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning when teammate Frank Vatrano fell on his leg.

Yeah, it was a rough opening night, health-wise. Luongo, Mackenzie, and Kiselevich will all miss the home opener Thursday night, pending any miracle recoveries. Lu being out for about a month is really difficult, given the back-to-backs coming up in the schedule, including the trip to Finland. But, that's why they got Hutchinson. We'll hope he and Reimer can hold down the fort. Save for the shorthanded goal, Tampa really didn't have many quality chances in that game, so the defense just has to do more of the same.

I wouldn't consider Reimer a backup, more like a bottom tier #1. Not sure what he has now as a full-time starter.

A 39 year old goalie is something to reconsider going forward.

Wait a second... is Bob Boughner (Boner) really the name of the Panthers HC?

Right up there with these real name classics:
    Dick Rektal
    Richard Head

Take 5 seconds to read the correct pronunciation of his name. Purely lazy.
