THE PHIL and all of HIS glory

I was always a phil defender, and he was real good in the playoffs with the leafs vs the bruins, and I also said that he could power the pens through some rounds if he remains on his game. But, it doesn't change the fact that in the regular season he disappears for big stretches and not just scoring. He was a lazy player with exceptional talent. The reason why they traded him is because he's not a charactwr guy that you need to have in the building stage. He's the perfect add on to an existing core as a 2nd line player. He was nowhere to be seen for the first 45 games then got streaky and again is proving he's a playoff player. What's the point of having a player that performs in the playoffs when you don't have the team to get you there and he's one of the main reasons.

Yeah, I'm following you there, Bob. I think the Avs are strong contenders to replace the Oil in our special board o' appreciation for how a team can take great talent and turn it rotten.

Often it's the owner or the GM to blame, and there is an element of that with the Avs. They have one of the richest owners in all sports but he's trying to fool the world into believing they have no funds. They do not promote the game in Denver either. They liked winning SC early in the franchise history in Colorado and seem to pine for the good old days when everything was easy.

Even the GM & HC combo reflect this lazy attachment to past glory. But to me, the real problem is Roy. He was, uhmm, mercurial as a player and he remains mercurial. I like a player that shows passion, but am less enamored when the presumed team leader does not seem capable of controlling himself. The Avs have some talent, and they'll ride the standings rollercoaster as a result. But, for the most part I think things are far from fine.

They lost one of their best team leaders over a few dollars; and when I talk to people in Denver they do not seem to grasp that there is more than points production in the valuation matrix. The team resembles an organization without a plan - an identity; they resemble the Oil.

We're talking about different things. Toronto hasn't even gotten the talent to build around yet. They have maybe Reilly and JVR identified. Marner looks like a stud, Nylander may be very good..but those are only maybes at this point.

They can't be compared to either Edmonton or Colorado because they still don't even have that much talent on the ice as of today.

    Yep, layers of bad.

They have a guy there in Sherman, before Sakic, that could make good decisions but chose not to for some reason.

They have a mickey mouse thing going on there. It's amazing that a team with some much has been able to do so little.

I really hope Roy sticks to his plan of flying around shooting blindly.

Are you fuckin nuts? My kids have been eating hot dogs and doughnuts like crazy so they can be like Phil. In fact, I'm going to put a sign on their bathroom mirror that reads "Be Like Phil!" so they can be inspired first thing in the morning.

The leafs bottom line depth is much better than the oilers, they now have zaitsev on D, and another blue chip in matthews. They aren't totally starting from scratch either, they still have bozak, komorov and kadri, which is probably much better than the oilers second liners.

    A stat from The Temple:
The Penz have won 16 of their last 17 when His Holiness scores a goal.

I heard on the radio yesterday about the Caps targeting Bozak for next year. I just checked, he's not even a FA until the following season. I wonder if that rumor has any legs?

Be careful with any Oilers comparison.

Nobody knows what line who is on. The talent is there at all positions, it's just fucked in the head and in the wrong spot.

Please let Phil win the Smythe

I can't even imagine the decades of trainwreck discussions that will bring. The voices and I would love it like few other events in the hockey universe.
Jumbo getting it would be sweet too.
