Teh phil made a big splash because of that trade for those two picks, but he had NOTHING to do with it. He had a bad rep in boston because he was a kid, the same way they ran seguin out of town, they had no patience. He's a quiet guy that is best when he's in the background and not depended on to be the focal point of the team. It took him a while to get going but it was more likely an adjustment period, a little long but the whole team was in a funk. May teh PHIL be with you pens fans!

you've got that wrong skinny, teh Phil forced his way out of Boston. Phil didn't want to play in Boston, Seguin did and the Bruins didn't want to put up w/ Seguin's immaturity. Phil forced the Bruins hand. Phil wouldn't negotiate w/ the Bruins and you may remember that the Bruins then wanted to deal him to Nashville and had a potential deal in place but Phil chose Toronto. yes he was an RFA but he wouldn't sign w/ Nashville or the Bruins.

I don't know the exact details, but I remember they sat him out a few playoff games, and then when he was put in the lineup he scored. Maybe he felt he wasn't wanted or appreciated, not sure what happened to seguin, but sure, like I said, these are kids and they're gonna act immature. Not saying the bruins were wrong at that time, but sometimes you have to weigh the pros and cons and ride it out, kadri's a perfect example, the leafs putting up with his krap and his payout isn't even half of seguins in the end.

my point is that Phile and Seguin's departures are completely different. Im not arguing the Bruins side on either???...certainly not in dealing Seguin because that was their decision. Kessel had some leverage and used it. thats why Boston fans hate(d?) him, he chose to leave. its butt-hurt Sully syndrome.

and fwiw i like teh Phil and what he brings to the table. not sure Id want him on my team in crunch time but I think he's good for the game and really good for the internet in general.

I get it, of course, I'm just wondering why he didn't want to stay in boston, young at the time, he must've taken the healthy scratches hard.

you're probably right about that. but as you pointed out he came back on fire and lit it up. he had great chemistry w/ Savard.

kind of a side note, Phil and Dougie Hamilton had similar exits imo.

I still can't wrap my head around how the dougie deal couldn't get done. Thin and aging on D, you'd think that it would've made perfect sense to lock him up for about 5 years. The only thing I could think of is that they had so many grit type D-men the last decade that dougie probably couldn't fit into a system that was already established well before he got there.

makes 2 of us. even w/ Dougie i was hoping they'd add another to the top 4. obviously they went a different route.
i feel like its similar thinking to a baseball team saying, "meh, we don't really need pitchers".
