BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson is mourning the deaths of his mother and brother in the last two weeks.

Betty Lee Jackson, 83, died Sunday in Los Angeles, the Browns confirmed Wednesday night. She had been ill for some time. John Jackson Jr. died unexpectedly two weeks ago.

"It's been really tough on him," Jackson's agent, John Thornton, told Cleveland.com. "He's just trying to let football help him out."

Jackson will remain with the team until his mother's funeral, which will take place after the Browns' preseason opener against the New York Giants on Aug. 9. Jackson had been flying to see his mother when he could.

"The people closest to him know what's been going on, and they know he hasn't been himself," Thornton said. "Being busy with football has helped, but it's still been extremely difficult."

The Browns used a first-round pick on tight end David Njoku last year, thinking he could become an impact pass-catcher.

At the moment, he’s struggling with the most important part of that job description.

Via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, Njoku has been plagued by drops in camp, with four in Sunday’s practice alone.

“Those tough ones happen,” Njoku said. “Just focus on the next play. Those things happen, and you’ve got to make the next play.”

His physical gifts alone are going to buy him plenty of chances, but the Browns are working overtime to make sure it doesn’t become a mental issue.

“Yes, he dropped some passes, but that is part of the game sometimes,” quarterback Tyrod Taylor said. “We know he can catch. His confidence is not broken or anything.”

Browns coach Hue Jackson said he’s had conversations with Njoku about the drops, specifically last weekend’s.

“He needs to know that I have confidence in him,” Jackson said. “I know the kind of player that he can be, but there is so much work that he has to do to be what I think he wants to be. In order to do that, every day you have got to be focused, determined and disciplined.”

Njoku caught 32 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns last year, and was only credited with three drops. So there’s clearly still room to grow, as long as he grows more confident in his own hands.

Browns RG Kevin Zeitler will be sidelined "several weeks" with a calf injury.

"Kevin is going to be OK, but he will be down for a little while," coach Hue Jackson said. "Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go in the next couple weeks or so." Headed into his age-28 season, Zeitler was typically excellent in his first year as a Brown in 2017. He has not missed a regular season game since 2014.

    @SAS

Not to rub salt in an old wound but.......oh, alright....I am rubbing a little salt in the head Manzealot's wounds.......for old time's sake, of course. :p

A chance to watch your former "chosen one"....

Johnny Manziel will be the starting quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes on Friday in what is certain to be ESPN's largest audience for a CFL game.

The Alouettes host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
Manziel has been in the CFL since May, when he signed with the Tiger-Cats. Unable to get on the field in Hamilton, Manziel was traded to Montreal on July 23.

Friday's game will be Manziel's first start in a professional football game since he started for the Browns in a season-ending loss to the Chiefs on Dec. 27, 2015.

Manziel will be the fourth starting quarterback this season for the 1-5 Alouettes.

Well, I just tuned in to see how Manziel is doing.......I know Montreal isn't doing too well this year but...........

    Middle of the Q3 and he's 9/17 for 90 yds and 4 INT's

    :dum:

(Edit) Just read that his first CFL pass was picked off. :wall:

And I think he's just about done.......find a fork and stick it in him.

You are most likely right Duff... just to play devil's advocate here though. He's only been back to football and off of drugs for about a month, going back 2 years. More importantly, he just arrived to this team a week and a half ago. Hard to learn the offense in that short of time, there is absolutely no way to get on the same page as your receivers in that short of time. IF he can handle the pressure of failing, which I have my doubts, he could get back to respectability next year. He sure as hell isn't warranting any looks from the NFL though. The nails are adding up quickly on his NFL coffin.

He had 4 practices. Also, not that it would have changed a whole lot, one of the int's went right off of Hoban's (if memory serves) own Tyrell Sutton's hands and into the Hamilton defender's.

Toronto ARE the Browns of the CFL. The team is rough, that's why they threw more poo at the wall in the trade for Manziel.

Unpopular opinion, but the right one: Manziel was totally worth it.

Why did Sherman cut him this weekend?

As far as I know, Manziel is still on Montreal's team.
