You didn't question the Richardson trade. You questioned going with Hoyer over Campbell. Fair market value remains to be seen. If Richardson improves, as a runner AND as a pass protector, then maybe the Colts got a deal. If not ??? Keep in mind that there are very few people on the planet that think any running back today is worth a first round pick. The Browns got ROASTED by many people on this site when they drafted Trent in the first round. Hindsight is 20/20 but, IMHO, he wasn't worth the #3 pick, nor any first round pick. The way the Browns played in the first 2 weeks, there was no way they would have gotten 7 or 8 wins even WITH Richardson. Obviously you didn't have to suffer through Pat Shurmur's staff. I believe the general consensus when this coaching staff was hired (even with Chud being a newbie) was that it was an upgrade over the prior staff. The fact that this trade happened after week 2 only tells me that they pulled the trigger while the Colts were still looking combined with avoiding any potential injury to their merchandise while the deal was percolating. However, to be honest - I would really like to know who called who first.
bluez, if it makes you feel better, they stated in the presser they had tried a few times but had not gotten through to him yet. By the presser, both Banner and Lombardi had talked to him, only Chud had not. The thing is, if the deal doesn't go through, then you don't want your player thinking "They don't see my value"...Unfortunately with trading with the Colts you get social media guru Irsay announcing everything to the world. If you don't get TRich on the first try, then there is a very real chance he will find out some other way. I agree Lym... Without having privileged info, I for one could conclude they went with Campbell as primary backup ONLY because of his starting experience. When given the pressure of throwing in a QB in the 4th Qtr down by a TD and your starter goes down, who would you want to handle the rock? Well, it happened last week and he crapped down his leg. So, now you go back to the evaluations and start the one who may have higher potential long term. If Hoyer comes in and gives a valiant effort of say 60% completion, any scoring drives at all (TD or otherwise), and no turnovers...It would not surprise me in the least when Weeden returns if they either a) trade Campbell or b) cut him outright. I don't believe for a second they are starting (Lombardi's guy mind you) Hoyer with the intentions of playing worse to get a better draft position. As for the timing of the Richardson deal..Couldn't have said it better myself Lym...I think you hit the nail on the head!
Lyman - I see what you are saying, and to your last question I believe that is what this really comes down to. Here's the thing for me, if the front office is willing to blow it up this season to prepare for next I honestly don't have a problem with that. They will go into the 2014 draft loaded with picks and if Hoyer plays decent enough they could look for value in both he and Weeden going into the draft or for other possible trade options. I thought this team was a little farther along than what it actually was and expected them to be competitive this season, but if they want to rebuild and in doing so go after the highest rated QB in the draft then going with Hoyer over Campbell takes on a different light. Its only my opinion, but from an objective perspective it has the look of a team that wants to find ways to develop the younger talent that it plans on keeping and dump the rest while positioning itself for next season. I know its tough times in Cleveland, but would you rather see a 4 win season with no chance at getting a player like Bridgewater or would you be ok with them basically using this season for the future?
Tim, to be quite honest . . . I don't really care anymore. Fifteen years of piss poor ownership, poor management even poorer coaching has hardened me to the point where I really don't care. When (if) this ownership/management group actually does what they say they INTEND to do, then maybe. Until then - I've heard it all too many times before. OBTW: For the record . . . Teddy Bridgewater won't last two years in the NFL.
Anytime I'm in Cleveland I drink heavily, it feels like the right thing to do. You think he's too slight in frame or you do you think there is something missing in his game?
Bluez's first few minutes w/ his new HP A few minutes later I believe this is the scene... After a few hours I'm sure it has turned into this.. Let us know when the ole Dell is back on-line Bluez
yes it does have windows 8 .I still wanted a tower system. nothing left that had 7 on them . I downloaded classic shell and it looks quite a bit like XP .
Just heard were looking to trade Gordon by the end of the month for another pick *WALL* I hope this doesn't happen. (Unless they overpay of course)
Well he played at his 2nd round pick level as a rookie, so I would assume minimum overpay would be a late first rounder, which will NEVER EVER EVER EVER happen, so this is a moot discussion...
So Sunday morning, as the team is riding to the stadium, Joe Thomas says hey guys just wait til next September. then we'll show them what we're made of. How will that go over? I wonder if that would make him a pariah or a management favorite? Just doesn't sound like a serious competitor, does it? Weeden says "give me a year, and you'll really see me fly". Is management buying that horsepoop? So why should we, or the players take the next 14 games seriously? Oh yeah, the paycheck. Now that's what I want to be my team's motivation week in and week out. The Banner's BANNER: Win Later
You guys are not seriously considering they will not go to the stadiums to win games are you? I don't care if Haslem himself (which he would never do) came down and told them, now go give em a show, but make sure you don't win...THE PLAYERS STILL ARE TOO COMPETITIVE NOT TO TRY AND WIN THE GAME.
Like the Colts didn't suck for Luck? Irish, this was a 5/6 win team before the season started. That's how many games they have won a season since they came back. Our line is terrible or Weeden , WR's and Richardson suck. None of them have done chit. Richardson is gone, Weeden (who hasn't done anything) is hurt and I think we have the worse WR's in the league. What turned the Colt's around? Sucking for Luck. I'm not comparing any of the QB's coming out to Luck. But that is the formula. Get your franchise QB. That can happen this year. This team hasn't had a franchise QB since Couch. 14 years ago. Needs to change or the losing wont stop. This year I'm expecting to fill QB, RB, Guard and WR in the draft. I also expect for them to bring in a FS and possibly a Center for when Mack bolts. I honestly think Mack will test free agency. Why wouldn't he? Lets just call it Dawsonism. He's got money. What if he wants to win? Thomas chose the money over winning. I heard people talking today that the Brown's may trade more player's. I'm all for it. This is a bad football team a bad organization. Has been. Record say's it all. Fellas the next thing after this is no one cares and empty seats in the stands. Just like the Indians. They are in the playoffs as of tonight and no one cares so no one goes. The fans don't like the owner. Haslam is almost at that point. But if they can turn those picks into TALENT people will have a short memory. So yes why win 5/6 games and not get the QB you covet. To finally get YOUR guy to really turn this thing around.
By Dave Kolonich OBR Browns Reporter Posted Sep 20, 2013 The general consensus among optimistic Browns' faithful is that Banner and company are building a nest egg of 2014 draft picks. 6 Comments By now, you?re either an apathetic Browns? fan or filled with rage following Wednesday?s Trent Richardson trade. In either case, you?re justified. However, I'll instead do what rational people do: THE IMMEDIATE In trying to spin Wednesday's trade as something status quo, Ray Horton made the comparison that Richardson could have easily been hurt and therefore, unavailable for the Browns. Given Richardson's running style and injury history, this makes sense on a lot of levels. Of course, that is total BS and Horton knows it. More immediate is that now opposing defenses have absolutely NO ONE to worry about on the Browns' offense. Josh Gordon? Do you honestly think Banner and company want THAT guy around? Chris Ogbannaya and Davone Bess? And so it goes. Back to Horton, the other immediate issue is that now any salvation for the Browns' 2013 season rests on Horton's defense - a unit that has flashed some pass rushing potential and has shown improvement (measured by Browns' expansion history criteria) against the run. Of course, before anyone pulls their groin reaching for this justification, just remember that Horton's defense has been atrocious on third downs. Given the regression of the Browns' offense, Horton's defense carries the twin distinction of being inadequate and a team strength. Speaking of the offense, Wednesday's trade does little to either enhance or detract from an unimaginative offense, comically bad offensive line and the usual Browns' quarterback turmoil. Along with a lot of unwatchable football. THE FUTURE The general consensus among optimistic Browns' faithful is that Banner and company are building a nest egg of 2014 draft picks. Richardson's trade nets what should be a mid to late first round pick - ammunition to make further moves in what is supposedly going to be a "strong" draft class. On the surface, this is ideal for a team with as many gaping roster holes as the Browns currently (and will) have. However, it's worth noting that the people assigned to actually make these multiple draft selections are fairly inexperienced in doing such a thing. In other words, a volume of draft picks means absolutely nothing - especially given that the current front office has already dug themselves a personnel hole. As it stands now, the 2013 draft is basically a one player draft - something that simply can't sustain a rebuilding team. Or, 2014 just became the most important draft in Browns' team history. If it's not, a franchise that is now firmly a national punch line will hit a scary new low. THE META Arriving at a logical intersection of "This team was already sunk" and "Hooray, Draft Picks!" is a much more useful thought. The people currently building the Browns are mostly unaffected by how the team actually plays. If Wednesday's trade confirms anything, it is that Joe Banner is following his own blueprint on how to build an NFL team. That much you already knew, but focus on how little resources and attention have been devoted to supposedly "lesser value" positions on the Browns' roster. The reason why Brian Hoyer is starting in Week Three, O'Neil Cousins has continued employment and Chris Owens was signed in the first place is because of Banner's disdain for spending anything above the league minimum to fill out a roster. In theory, Banner's approach makes sense. However, what Banner is attempting could be considered fully detached from the reality of football Sundays. Or if anything, it should be a warning that the likes of Alex Mack and a soon to be growing list of Tom Heckert veterans won't be a part of the next Browns' reboot. Or the one after that
Here in lies the hole in your theory... Teddy Bridgewater is a Junior Marcus Mariota is a Sophomore Johnny Manziel is a Sophomore Brett Hundley is a Sophomore The only QB that is assured of even participating in the 2014 draft is Tajh Boyd, so unless you have him as the top pick on your draft board, over all the other QBs, losing on purpose only loses you money.. I for one want a new shiny franchise QB and by all indications all 5 above could fit that category more than all but about 6 TOTAL QBs in the last 10 drafts. The only prospects I would elevate at or above all 5 of these guys AT THE TIME THEY WERE PROSPECTS are: Andrew Luck RGIII Cam Newton Sam Bradford Matthew Stafford Eli Manning and possibly Matt Ryan, Jamarcus Russell and Philip Rivers, but they were all critical choices in their draft spots. I believe all 5 of these prospects are better than the other QBs of the past decade drafted in the first round, with the exception of Aaron Rodgers and {cough cough} Ben Roethlisberger (3 years ago)...That list is 19 names long and includes Joe Flacco and Jay cutler... So IF they collectively wanted to make a mark bigger than the 1983 draft class and all come out, I don't think the Browns would miss out on a very good prospect... You will find over the next 7 months arguments to why each and every one of these five guys are better than the other four. There isn't going to be a consensus #1. Teddy Bridgewater is highly valued because he is like Andrew Luck, he's safe. He is a classic passer who can run if in trouble, but rarely does. Then you have the "new breed" QBs who can do it all ala Colin Kaepernick...and dare I say, probably do it better than he does. So in 2014 you have the possibility of Andrew Luck and 4 RGIII's all in the same draft...would not surprise me in the least if all 5 go in the top ten if they all come out... OR...you could end up with only one in Tajh Boyd, IF HE IS YOUR MAN, then by all means tank for Boyd, not Bridgewater...because Bridgewater is not a 100% sure thing to even come out in the draft...although rumors are that he is and rumors are that Manziel is and rumors are that Both Mariota AND Hundley are seriously considering it. Bear in mind, this regime is speculated to want a new style offense, which would work with any of these 5, but Teddy prefers to run a more traditional pass 95% of the time offense...Just a little FYI...
