For the second consecutive week, the Browns offense failed to convert third downs and the Browns defense failed to get off the field on third downs. Also, for the second consecutive week, the Browns lost.

BALTIMORE--One of the main differences in the loss to the Ravens was the Browns defense could not get off the field on third down. On the Ravens first touchdown drive, Joe Flacco was three-of-three for 44 yards, all on third down. On the first third down attempt of the third quarter, Flacco hit Torrey Smith for 23 yards on third-and-6. On the next attempt, facing third-and-7, Flacco hit Marlon Brown for 10 yards in front of Tashaun Gipson. On the third try, Flacco converted a pass to Brandon Stokley for 11 yards to the Browns' 13 with Buster Skrine on the coverage.

On the second scoring drive to make it 14-6, Flacco hit Stokley for a first down on third-and-16 in front of Skrine. On the next third down situation, he hit Marlon Brown in front of Owens to the Browns' six.

Leading 14-6, Flacco hit Stokley on third-and-3 for a four-yard gain and a first down as the Ravens preserved their lead to win the game. Flacco's streak was snapped with just over 3:40 to play when Stokley caught a pass but was tackled short of the first down.

Meanwhile, the Browns couldn't sustain drives on third downs. The Browns converted their first attempt on third down in the third quarter, but then were short on a five-yard pass to Davone Bess on third-and-8. On the next possession, Weeden converted a first down once again on the first attempt, but threw an incomplete pass to Greg Little on third-and-12.

After only converting 4-of-10 on third downs in the first half, Flacco was five-of-five in the second half, resulting in points.

Weeden Hurt: QB Brandon Weeden hit his hand on the helmet of a Ravens player and QB Jason Campbell took over with 3:34 to play with the Browns starting at their own one yard line. Campbell's first pass was incomplete but a pass interference call moved it to the 22. Weeden finished 21-of-33 for 227 yards. He was sacked five times. QB Jason Campbell was just 1-of-5 for six yards in relief of Weeden.

Rush Defense: The Browns held RB Ray Rice to 36 yards on 13 carries before he left with a hip injury. RB Bernard Pierce had 17 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown.

T Rich: RB Trent Richardson failed to hit the 20 carry mark as he was 18 rushes for 58 yards and five receptions for 21 yards.

Cameron Again: TE Jordan Cameron had five receptions for 95 yards to lead the Browns. WR Davone Bess had five catches for 38 yards along with Richardson's five receptions.

Busy Day: P Spencer Lanning punted 8 times for an average of 32 yards. He had a long of 53 yards.

Mingo's Debut: Rookie LB Barkevious Mingo made his NFL debut after missing time since the second preseason game with a bruised lung. He made an immediate impact by sacking QB Joe Flacco on the first play he was in the game. Mingo raced by LT Bryant McKinnie and dropped Flacco for a nine-yard loss. In the fourth quarter, Mingo rushed Flacco and batted the pass into the air and almost intercepted it.

Game of Inches: The Browns went for the first down on fourth-and-4 with 14:44 to play from the Ravens 36. Weeden hit TE Jordan Cameron on a crossing route and the ball was spotted just an inch or two short of the first down. Rob Chudzinski challenged the spot and it was upheld.

Opportunity Missed: Midway through the third quarter, RB Chris Ogbonnaya ran wide open down the sideline on the wheel route but QB Brandon Weeden overthrew him by inches. The ball went off Ogbonnaya's fingertips. The field was wide open ahead of Ogbonnaya.

Captain Turnover: LB D'Qwell Jackson recovered a fumble on the Ravens' 45 after RB Ray Rice was stripped of the ball by LB Craig Robertson.

Phil's Fit: DL Phil Taylor picked up a personal foul after DL Desmond Bryant dropped RB Ray Rice for a three-yard loss on the second play of the game. The Ravens would have been in third-and-long, but the penalty kept the drive alive and the Ravens drove into field goal range. However, K Justin Tucker missed the 50 yard attempt. On at least two occasions, it looked as though Taylor waived DL Ishmaa'ily KItchen attempted to replace Taylor and Taylor waved him off.

Sack Attack: Mingo had a sack and Sheard and Bryant brought Flacco down in the second quarter. Sheard knocked Flacco's arm on a third down attempt in the fourth quarter.

Cundiff Revenge: K Billy Cundiff was 2-of-2 on field goal attempts in the first half, including a 51-yard attempt with two seconds left in the first half. He was just one-of-13 on attempts from 50 yards out since 2009 before his 51 yard attempt.

New Flacco: QB Joe Flacco's wife, Dana, gave birth to a baby boy about an hour before kickoff. Flacco is 10-0 against the Browns.

Rubin, Lauvao Inactive: DL Ahtyba Rubin (calf) and OL Shawn Lauvao (ankle) were inactive for the second-straight week. DL Billy Winn started in Rubin's place at LDE and OL Oniel Cousins started at right guard for Lauvao. Other in actives for the Browns were: QB Brian Hoyer, TE MarQueis Gray, OL Martin Wallace, DL Armonty Bryant and LB Paul Hazel. For the Ravens: WR Jacoby Jones, RB Shaun Draughn, OL Jah Reid, OL Ryan Jensen, WR Deonte Thompson, DE DeAngelo Tyson and DL Brandon Williams.

Hard to know for sure yet as you never truly know, but Harbaugh's quote after the game was:

I'm sure we'll hear more about this as the week goes on, but so far, it doesn't appear to be serious.

  4. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

That's because on 3rd and 7, the Ravens receivers ran 10 yard routes

The Browns on the other hand on 3rd and 7 the receivers ran 4 yard routes

Do we consult with Pat Shurmur in the locker room at halftime or what? The drops...The ill timed penalties....the bone head mistakes....it's all way too familiar.

Weeden has NO touch on the football. Everything is a rocket. He's killing us. It's not a hard throw when the receiver is as open as Oby was. Just put a little air under it and let the receiver do the rest. That was the game when we missed on that golden opportunity.....

  6. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

    Let's see...

    • Brandon Weeden is a certified bust [called it]. Unable to deliver passes, see the field, avoid the pressure, make smart decisions or run the offense effectively (three DOG penalties? -- really?!)[/*]

    • Trent Richardson is a certified bust. 22nd in the NFL in rushing yards and 28th in YPA. A pathetic 3.4 from a highly-touted, highly-drafted pick. Meanwhile, Doug Martin continues to be a monster.[/*]

    • Greg Little is a certified bust. Cannot catch, cannot separate and cannot score. Bad, bad player.[/*]

At this point, the talent gap between the Browns and other competitive teams is night and day. The Browns are possibly three to four drafts behind and it all needs to begin with the QB position. Ideally, they continue to play this way for the rest of 2013 and lock up Teddy Bridgewater.

I'm sick to death of waiting for the team to turn around. This garbage has to end.

  7. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

And no Pat Shurmur to blame it on.

I'm sure it had to be the Ghost of Shurmur's Past that caused that to happen.

Can't say that I disagree with you on most of your rant.

However . . . I'm willing to hold off judgment on Richardson for now. IF there was a competent QB under center that the opposing defense would have to respect, would Richardson's performance be better? Don't know.

  9. bluez M.V.P. Browns Indians

there is a lot wrong with this team . the QB gets to much credit when they win ..they will win one this season right . and to much blame when they lose . changing the QB will not fix what is wrong with this team .

what the hell three DOG penalties ????/ one right after a injury TO and they still couldn't get a play and the right personnel on the field in time ?? i put that on the sorry ass coaching staff .

O Line is struggling to block anything . can't run block or pass block

Lazy lackadaisical approach on offense ..NO FIRE at all no confidence .pathetic !

Defense cant make a play when it counts .

never thought i would say this but these nitwits make Shurmur look good :(

Jim Brown's original thoughts on Trent Richardson seem spot on. Very ordinary.....Not good at all for a #3 overall pick. I understand that his situation is less than ideal considering the struggles of our QB, but a RB that highly touted should still be much more effective. Where's the explosive RB we saw at Bama??

Do to our overall team dysfunction on offense, I'm not ready to give up on T. Rich and call him a "bust" yet, but I'm disappointed in #33, and I'll leave it at that for now...

Weeden is a mess, and I've got about the same amount of confidence in him as I do Jason Campbell....I honestly wish that they would give Hoyer a shot, and that's about as pathetic as it gets considering we are just now preparing for week #3.....

Maybe I'm too impatient considering we our once again changing the entire offensive scheme. I'm just sick of un-watchable football...and that's what we got so far. Completely un-watchable bullchit!

You know Sam, I was coming on this morning to give you a little credit...shoulda known you would beat me to it..

Never seen anyone gloat about the negative as much as you.

Moving on...YOU WERE RIGHT... Weeden is not going to amount to anything in this league. We might as well begin looking at the 2014 draft for his replacement.

Moving on...I could care less where TRich was drafted, get the O-line fixed and he will be a successful RB.

Moving on...Greg Little can only keep his head on straight for a few weeks at a time

Bottom line, we are not 3 drafts behind the rest of the league..

Giving the front office credit, they have added defensive talent this offseason to vault this team into top ten contention with the addition of a certified starting CB and a FS upgrade. They have top 5 front seven right now. Find one in free agency and the other in the draft and we are good to go.

Speaking of draft...QB all the way...Unless Weeden pulls some sort of miracle turn around, we don't win more than 4 games this year and we are contending for the number one over all pick. Even the Jags and Raiders will come close to that win total. That happens and Teddy Bridgewater will become our savior.

If we do sneak out a few more victories...What is the consensus on Johnny Manziel and Tajh Boyd??

My draft strategy would be simple, Take Teddy Bridgewater if available, then BPA in the first round if he isn't. That would include...CB, WR, QB and G...

Then draft Marcus Mariota in the 2nd if Bridgewater is gone in the first. He has as much chance as Johnny football and Boyd IMHO. I would not be opposed to Mariota in the first round either, just to make sure we get him.

If the O-line was actually doing better I might just tend to somewhat agree w/ parts of this.

This sounds exactly what Banner and Lombatard have planned. They apparently don?t want to have an 5-7 guys on the O-line that can open running lanes and protect the passer. 6 sacks week one and 5 sacks week two.

They have been aware of the issues at Guard since before the 2013 draft and still haven?t done a phuqin thing to fix it.

At least we can agree on this SAS. Good thing there?s plenty of other things to get out and do in this part of the country.

  17. Alright fellas round on me ! Hell after yesterday a shot on me also. After having a day to think about yesterday I've come to this conclusion. This team needs major help.

    1. Talent evaluating. Why does it seem no matter who is calling the front office shots they cant get Talent.
I liked the Mingo pick. I thought he was the second best OLB in the draft after Jordon. Warmack is who
I wanted and Jordon was gone by our pick. We could of solidified the line by putting Warmack between
    Thomas and Mack and rolled.
    2. We passed on Honey Badger. That will come back to bite us in the arse. With those 2 picks we could of
took care of 2 HUGE problems. I thought Honey Badger was the best DB in the draft. I know he has
problems but to get that kind of TALENT in the 3rd round is unheard of. Just imagine we took McCoy in
    3rd rd.
    3. Line play is just pitiful. Warmack who was the best guard in the draft woulda, coulda and should of been
ours. We should of walked out of that draft with the best guard and DB in the draft. TALENT!
    4. Weeden is not an everyday starter in the NFL. There are guys on the Brown's coaching staff that should
of known this guy is not the answer. Matter of fact today I heard on the radio that both Banner and
Lombardi don't like Weeden. The radio even said they both were at the Bama/Texas A&M game scouting
Manziel and Carron. Also they plan on looking at Bridgewater, Boyd and Mariota very soon.
    5. WR play is embarrassing. The Browns front office know they don't have a true #1 WR. They cant get
separation or catch the football. In a pass happy league that is not good. Littles days in Cleveland are
numbered very short. They have more confidence in Gordon than Little.
    6. Richardson is not the offenses problem. The O-line is the problem. The Brown's should of got a fullback
to help out the running game. I thought Turner's offense uses a FB? I guess not. A FB could also help
out the pass protection. 2 very big needs.
    7. The defense has been a very pleasant surprise. I guess that is what they wanted to build first. They are
light years ahead of the offense. I still would like a CB or FS this year. Like the front 7.
    8. As I hinted on before I don't want the 4th/5th pick again. Bridgewater, Boyd, Mariota. I want 1 of the 3.
I want the Brown's to be good. I want a near or playoff team. But fellas that is years away. They cant
    even score TD's!!!
    9. Shwartz the RT is having a tough time out there. I hope we can resign Mack or we are in trouble on the
    line.
    10. We need to sign a guard, WR, FS, FB and draft a freaking QB, guard and WR!

That's my thoughts anyway. This is not the Browns I grew up watching. If this is the best they can do they need to try again!

  18. TopDawg Legend

bottom line: We're 2 weeks in, and already completely irrelevant. >o_O

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Two Browns players were involved in traffic incidents on Monday.

Wide receiver Greg Little, who has a history of driving troubles, was issued three traffic violations after being stopped at 1 a.m., Cleveland police said. Also, guard Shawn Lauvao got his car stuck on a curb when he drove into a downtown construction zone. Team spokesman Zak Gilbert said Lauvao was not injured and there was no alcohol involved.

Lauvao, who has been sidelined since undergoing ankle surgery last month, was headed toward the team's facility when he inadvertently drove onto the entrance ramp to a new bridge. He attempted to turn his car around and got stuck, Gilbert said. Lauvao's car had to be towed.

Little, who recently settled a ticket for driving with an expired license plate and was ticketed for speeding, was cited for a stop-sign violation, change of course and driving with a suspended license, Sgt. Sammy Moore said.

In April, Little was charged with drag racing after he lost control of his Audi and was involved in a single-car accident. He admitted to driving 127 mph, hit a guardrail, knocked down a light pole and left 40 yards of brake tracks. He was fined $350.

Last month, Little was cited for driving 81 mph in a 60 mph zone.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said he spoke with Little about his new traffic offenses. Chudzinski said any discipline for Little would be handled "in house."

Little had four catches for 33 yards in the Browns' 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
