I agree that the Browns will probably carry 6 wide receivers with 4 you identified included. Somehow, I don't think the 6th guy competing for a roster spot is currently in Berea.
It's a rarity when a star player gets to free agency, finds his true value, and comes back to his old team and gives them the opportunity to match...That almost never happens. I simply think, when I look at our roster, that it was a mistake not to match...It wasn't going to rock the boat financially....The money was about the same. It boils down to, how much do you appreciate what TP brings to the table? IMO, it's a lot. He put up those numbers with a slew of Cleveland crappy QB's slingin it around. QB Geezus , Charlie Whitehurst was taking snaps for crying out loud. Corey Coleman wasn't doing squat on the other side either. TP was our only threat in the passing game. Every defense in the league knew it too, but still couldn't stop him... It all water under the bridge now anyway....Look around at the weapons the good teams have at the WR position, then look at our roster.... I get accused quite a bit of being a Browns homer. You know, one of those Browns fans that just agrees with everything his team does, and likes everything they do, no matter what...lol! So make note of this one. I did not agree with the handling of the Terrelle Pryor situation...Put it in the books. Maybe we'll get him next year, when he will cost $12M per...
i agree Lym... I don't know if they will cough up what it takes for a Victor Cruz, but I think another vet will be added, though it might not happen until teams start making cuts...
I don't begrudge the man his right to bargain for more $$. I don't disagree that TP and Cody K, and the Browns offense would both have benefited from having TP even on a one year deal. Noted *YES* That TD, as I see it, is what the Browns FO was exactly trying to avoid. Offering him a 4-year deal that was above his market value this year, and locking up that talent for the next several years. Rather than paying him on a 1-year prove it deal, and then have pay him $12M+/year to lock him up long term,at the end of next season. Plus you then run the risk of once again the Browns being forced to match some offer made by another team. We already know that this current FO staff doesn't like to play that way.
That is precisely where I see an added WR coming from. (a training camp cut . . . not Victor Cruz) TD . . . I fully understand your frustration over the Pryor situation. I really do. But . . . Bringing him back on a 1 year "prove it" deal is NOT how this front office is building this team. Yes, they need to get some wins this year. But it is apparent to me that their goal is not be mediocre in 2017. Their goal is to be elite in 2018 and beyond. The only way to do that is to have 53 players that place the team first . . . not a contract first then the team. If the TEAM succeeds, the contracts will follow.
Like I said a few posts back...I'm banking on our TE's to be the integral part of our passing game, because though I expect Coleman to step up this year, we just don't have much at WR after him. Britt has been up and down his entire career, mostly down.... It's clear fellas, that the Browns were not going to budge or make an exception, even for a fantastic talent that they literally pulled out of nowhere, and I still think it was a mistake. The only ones that really get screwed are Browns fans. Other than Thomas and Crowell, Pryor was the only player we had on offense last year that was worth a shit......It's a shame that they couldn't get it worked out, one way or another...He's just another in a long list of talented players that came through our system, honed his craft to near elite level, and now we get to watch him flourish elsewhere...Certainly not the first player I liked, that got away.
Speaking Joe Thomas . . . The first time David Njoku laid eyes on him . . . He thought Thomas was a Coach! Rookies !!! Gotta love'em.
4th round draft pick, CB Howard Wilson fractured his kneecap during the rookie mini-camp. It will require surgery and he be out a significant amount of time.
per NBC Sports: Browns sign a pair of defensive backs The Browns lost a rookie defensive back to injury during their rookie minicamp when fourth-round pick Howard Wilson suffered a fractured patella. Wilson needs surgery to repair the injury and will miss a significant amount of time while he recovers. A couple of other rookies will help the Browns make up for his absence. The team announced a pair of undrafted free agent signings on Monday and both players are defensive backs who tried out for the team during the minicamp. Donte Carey, a 23-game starter at Grand Valley State, and Najee Murray, who saw action in 27 games while at Kent State. The Browns waived offensive lineman Josh Boutte to keep the roster at the offseason maximum of 90 players.
It's that post draft eye of the storm. Everyone is catching their breath and finding their footing. I said it last season after the draft and this seems like a good time to repeat it. I'm a big advocate of how the Browns utilize picks like currency to improve future drafts and manipulate the board in their favor. The only other team this off-season that has been as effective as Cleveland in that manner would be the Patriots. Let that sink in for a moment... For a team that has struggled to find any kind of cement to stand on for a couple decades to suddenly leap frog, in my opinion, 30 teams with respect to how they approach draft capital is astounding.
Looks like Cleveland is close to signing free agent CB Jason McCourty. Had dinner with the brass last night, touring the facility and getting a physical today... *BRAVO*
This is like a possible Tribe signing....coming off an injury and signing a deal in hopes he has something left...are they bidding against themselves or are other teams interested?
