Cleveland Browns What if the Browns had drafted Khalil Mack and Derek Carr in 2014? The team never gave much consideration to Mack, who has turned into a star for the Raiders. Had the Browns taken Carr, their quarterback saga might have ended. The most painful part of the story: Instead of Mack and Carr, the Browns wound up with Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel in the first round. It's not overstating it to say that draft set the Browns back five years. -- Pat McManamon
I wonder if that's all over with ? or will more indictments come down yet ? He owned us a week before the Feds raided his place *ROSE*
I don't think it's gone away...I've have no idea what's going on with Pilot Flying J Truck stops and that whole fiasco...My guess is, our owner is still buying his way out of trouble. But when he started getting his wife Dee, more involved, I thought maybe it was because the NFL wanted him to do that...Just in case Jimmy goes away for awhile.
I was thinking the same thing . his brother who is the Gov isn't innocent in this either . Only us we could end up with a deal like this . Maybe the league is still pissed at us for saving our team in 95 . PHUQ EM !
By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on April 23, 2017 at 6:05 AM, updated April 23, 2017 at 6:08 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- "We are on the eve of a really momentous draft class for us." Those words were spoken by Sashi Brown when the Cleveland Browns vice president discussed next week's 2017 NFL Draft. The Browns have five of the first 65 picks, including No. 1 and 12 in the first round. The Browns are an easy target with their Ivy League front office and the dismal showing on the field. But the fact is any team -- especially a bad one -- would love to be heading into this draft with 11 of Cleveland's picks. As Brown also mentioned, "it's a double draft." He means the Browns have two picks in the first round, two picks in the second round. They can always mess up the picks, and this front office had a rocky start in 2016. 1. You can argue they made a mistake by trading down from No. 2 to No. 15. What made it look worse is it appears Carson Wentz (No. 2 pick) will be a very solid quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles. Perhaps better than that. 2. Compounding it was first-round pick Corey Coleman had a rotten rookie year. The receiver from Baylor couldn't stay healthy. He had a hamstring injury in training camp. He missed six games with a broken hand in the regular season. 3. In the second game of the season, Coleman caught five passes. Two were for touchdowns. He was the NFL Rookie of the Week. Then he suffered a broken hand in practice. He missed the next six games. 4. The rest of the year was pretty sad. He caught only 26 passes over the last eight games, one for a touchdown. He longest catch in that span was for 21 yards. He was struggling with the cold weather and learning an NFL playbook. At Baylor, they kept things very basic for the offense. He looked lost at times. 5. If Coleman becomes a productive receiver in 2017, the draft starts to look a little better. That's especially true because second-rounder Emmanuel Ogbah led the team with 5.5 sacks. Only four other rookies had more. He is talented. 6. Not sure what kind of career Cody Keesler will have in the NFL, but he is at least a backup quarterback. 7. I'm not going to sort through all 14 picks. It is discouraging that Ogbah looked like the only selection who could one day be a Pro Bowl player. But it's also true many players need 2-3 years to give a true indication of how they'll perform in the NFL. 8. Despite several mistakes in the 2016 draft, the trades made before that draft played a major role in setting up the 2017 draft. The biggest moves produced picks No. 12 and 52, creating the "double draft" with multiple picks in the first and second rounds. CHANGING DIRECTION 1. The front office did learn more than a few things from the 2016 draft, followed by the 1-15 regular season. They absolutely disdained free agency in 2016. They spent little, and didn't buy much that helped the team. 2. After watching the Browns lead the NFL by allowing 66 sacks and three quarterback concussions, they spent big to help the offensive line -- a combined $76 million ($34 million guaranteed) for guard Kevin Zeitler and center J.C. Tretter. 3. They signed veteran wide receiver Kenny Britt to a $32 million deal ($18 million guaranteed). 4. A mid-season trade with New England helped position the Browns to sign Jamie Collins to a $50 million deal ($26 million guaranteed). 5. Perhaps some of these high-priced free agents will get hurt or bust out. Perhaps not breaking the bank for Terrelle Pryor will haunt them. 6. The Browns have made it clear they won't spend like this in most free agent periods. But they realized they had to spend now or another complete embarrassment on the field loomed. 7. They also signed Jamar Taylor and Joel Bitonio to contract extensions. 8. I get a lot of contract?information from Over The Cap, an excellent site. They say the Browns spent more money in free agency in 2017 ($59 million) than any other year. Yet, the Browns still lead the entire NFL in salary cap room ($61 million). That was also set up by some moves made in 2016. BIGGEST TEST COMING 1. The Browns recently have had multiple first-round picks and trashed them. In 2014, those selections were Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel. In 2012, the picks were Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden. Now get this, only Weeden is on an NFL roster. He is a backup quarterback in Houston. 2. But the only way for the Browns ever to dig out of this dismal ditch of being the NFL's worst franchise is through the draft. One of the best ways to have good drafts is with multiple picks, especially in the first three rounds. 3. They have 11 picks in this draft. As Brown said, "We are positioned very differently from 2015, so the need to continue to acquire high-value picks is less intense." 4. In other words, Brown was saying the team doesn't need to keep trading down to add picks. He sounds very ready to make Myles Garrett the first pick in the draft. 5. The Browns also have their own first-round pick in 2018, along with three second-rounders next year as some other trades kick in. 6. I don't know if they will draft the guys.?I do know this is the right way to go into a draft.
So I put my thoughts on Canfora's 'report' back a few pages, but here's the ultimate question: When the NCAA season ended, it was rumored the Browns had an "astronomical grade" on Myles Garrett and - at the time - the best two QB prospects were "the Deshawns". I get Trubisky was late to the ball, but what happened between January and now that makes them flip 100%? A1: The Browns got desperate and took need over talent. A2: The Owner still meddles in the affairs of the football team. Honestly, not sure which answer is worse. And I like Mitch Trubisky - a lot. He's my top-rated QB, and many other folks' as well. But drafting him to Cleveland - especially at #1 overall - is a recipe for disaster.
Well, it's Occam's Razor... The media have one job to do...Keep people tuning in to their broadcast/article/tweets/employer's web pages, etc... It takes A LOT OF WORK to keep the public interested on a daily basis. I would even give them a LOT of credit for building up the steam of what has become the NFL Draft Phenomenon. Who would have ever thought a simple draft of players, of which 65% of the top prospects fail, would become an event that is talked about for 3 months straight with no let up what so ever? The media does a wonderful job of baiting and keeping the general public's interest during this long time period. The contention that Deshaun Watson was the best QB in this draft, may or may not have changed on the majority of draft boards...we will see Thursday. I still have them ranked the same as I did way back in January... Deshaun Watson 1 Deshone Kizer 2 Then, Trubisky 3 and Mahomes 4 are both ever so slightly ahead of Webb 5...This is where I have changed my tune, as I had Webb #3 in January, until I found out he has 9 1/4" hands, same as Mahomes...which ultimately moves Trubisky into the defacto #3 spot in my book. Both Mahomes and Webb have shown issues with balls floating, I attribute that to hand size as stupid/silly as that sounds to most of you... I have no doubt STILL that Myles Garrett will have his name called on Thursday night for the Browns at #1 overall. Then, I predict Deshaun Watson will be the first QB taken in the draft...After that, I have no freaking clue what so ever at any position or team...
Irish, I have a six-pack that says Trubisky is drafted before Watson. You in? (Deja Vu all over again )
And that right there wins the prize of the day. If the NFL hadn't stretched silly season to squeeze every last hyped up penny, nickel and dime that they can, the Browns would have announced they had already signed Garret. I'm sure there is also a bit of the FO holding out for any last minute suckers.......um, I mean trade partners for the #1. It was common place for years where the #1 pick was signed and announced early on, prior to the rookie pay scale that was instituted and made trading for the #1 feasible again.
Never mind that...let's get together and I'll pay off my old bet while you ridicule me for saying Watson over Trubisky...deal?
9-of-16 scouts polled by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel named Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer this year's draft-eligible quarterback likeliest to bust. Patrick Mahomes received two likeliest-to-bust votes, Mitchell Trubisky and Deshaun Watson each got one, and one scout declined to comment. The final two scouts said all of the quarterbacks were equally risky. Kizer looked like a potential No. 1 overall pick after his sophomore year, but he temporarily got benched last year as the bottom fell out on Notre Dame's season. "He?s not as good as he should be because he?s not committed to the game," one AFC executive said of Kizer. "He?s committed to building a brand. He wants all the things that come with being a starting quarterback but doesn?t want to put in the work." Added one NFC personnel man, "(Selfishness and money are) what drives him. It's all about him. Prima donna. Thin-skinned."
The Cleveland Browns are reportedly split on whether they should take a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft or go with the seemingly safer pick in Myles Garrett, and history could tell us something about which path they will take. Last week, a report surfaced claiming Browns ownership wants to draft Mitch Trubisky while the coaching staff likes Garrett. If owner Jimmy Haslam is the one who wants Trubisky, the former North Carolina star could hear his name called first. A story former Browns CEO Joe Banner told this week helps explain why. In a podcast appearance with Albert Breer of The MMQB, Banner said he was ?beyond shocked? when the Browns picked Johnny Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. That?s because Banner was fired by the Browns roughly three months before the draft, and he says Manziel was off the team?s draft board entirely at that time. ?To be completely candid, at that point he wasn?t on the board,? Banner said, as transcribed by Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports. ?Our attitude at that point was we weren?t comfortable with the risks that came with Johnny and we weren?t going to pick him.? So what changed? Banner can?t say for certain, but he says he, former general manager Michael Lombardi ? who was fired at the same time ? and then-assistant GM Ray Farmer all discussed Manziel and did their homework on him. ?To me it?s a great mystery,? Banner added. ?I?d love to know from the time I left to the time they drafted, whether it was a function of deciding they were willing to take a chance on more because they thought the upside and talent was so great. Frankly, when I left we had some concerns about his talent. We weren?t sure he was that accurate. We weren?t sure he could stay healthy. And we weren?t completely sold on the mental acumen part of it. Then, of course, there were off-field issues that we were aware of that were concerning.? There have always been rumblings that Haslam was the one who wanted Manziel, and the team owner obviously gets the final say. Haslam wasn?t the only owner who liked Manziel, as we all know the infamous draft day story about Jerry Jones from 2014. In hindsight, Manziel was a horrible pick. You can understand why he would appeal to an owner, however, as he was a national superstar with a massive following. Many scouts and analysts feel there are no quarterbacks in this year?s draft ? Trubisky included ? who are worthy of being taken at No. 1 overall. But if Haslam believes otherwise, none of that will matter.
I wonder how far Conley will fall ? wither he did it or not he put himself in a position he didn't need to .
A man walks into a bar... The bartender asks "Why the long face?" The man replies "I just found out my wife is sleeping with another man. I've decided I'm going to drink myself to death." The bartender looks shocked and says "I'm sorry I can't help you kill yourself." The man asks "Well what would you do in my situation?" The bartender puffs himself up a bit and says "If I found out a guy was sleeping with my wife I wouldn't sit around feeling sorry for myself, I'd kill the guy." The man jumps up from his stool and shouts "That's a great idea! Thanks!" and runs out of the bar. A couple hours goes by and the bartender is starting to get nervous when the man walks back into the bar with a smile on his face. "Did you kill the guy?" The bartender asks nervously. "Nope! I slept with your wife. Whiskey please."
