BEREA, Ohio ? The Browns' new-look offensive line will have a new look on Sunday. The latest shakeup comes in the wake of starting center Cameron Erving suffering a pulmonary contusion during Sunday's loss to the Ravens. Erving spent Sunday night in the hospital and was released on Monday morning. That means that right guard John Greco, who played some at center in 2014 after then-starter Alex Mack broke his leg, will slide over one spot. "Greco will go over and play at center, and (Alvin) Bailey will go play guard," head coach Hue Jackson said on Monday. "I feel good about that combination. Greco has done it in games before so I think we will manage that part pretty well." If you're concerned that maybe Greco isn't ready for this, he said back in August that playing center has always been in the back of his mind. "It's always in the back of my mind because that's been our plan the last few years and until I get told otherwise, that's still my plan," Greco said during the team's joint practices in Tampa. "If it happens, I'll be ready." Monday, it happened. "Here it is," Greco said, "and I'm ready mentally. This week in practice, I'll get preparation with (quarterback) Cody (Kessler), get the snap timing and everything down and we'll get calls straight. We'll have meetings all week and everything. We'll be ready to go." Greco, who says he regularly practices snaps with the quarterbacks, said the biggest adjustment for him will be who he's communicating with throughout the game. "Playing next to the center my whole career and playing center, I'm dialed in mentally and I know what we have to do assignment-wise with the communication," Greco said. "It's just about getting everybody lined up. Instead of communicating with the center and right tackle, I'm communicating with both guard and both tackles. I'll be ready to do that." As for the man who will take Greco's spot at guard, Bailey came over from Seattle during the offseason. He originally was competing for the starting job at right tackle, a job that eventually went to Austin Pasztor. "I feel like, for me personally, I felt like this was the best opportunity for me, so that's why I made the decision to come here and be here," Bailey said at the beginning of training camp, "and I was excited that Hue Jackson was the new coach and things like that." "Alvin's an awesome player," Greco said. "I played next to him in the spring and he and I had great chemistry. I have no doubt that he's going to come in and do an unbelievable job." Perhaps the biggest benefit for Greco and Bailey is that they aren't being thrown into these positions and this pairing in a game. Bailey was asked to play just four snaps on Sunday against Baltimore after Erving left the game. "When you're the backup at a position, there's times -- like Alvin didn't get a lot of reps last week at guard and he stepped in there and was able to play his butt off," Greco said. "...That's the thing, when you're the backup or you're the next guy in at a different position, you have to be ready, because they don't care. You can't say, 'I didn't get any reps there.' No one cares. It's just you've got to get the job done, and everyone has that in the back of their minds."
One of my all time favorite Browns and a TRUE ENFORCER . the man couldn't play in todays version of wussified cant hit no , wont stand for the Anthem phuqued up football league . I still have his jersey .it was the last player jersey I bought and it will be the last player jersey I will ever buy . RIP ERock
Browns waived LB Scooby Wright. Per Profootballtalk, Wright will be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers. Wright was a star college player at the University of Arizona, but was picked after 249 other players in the draft. The fact that he can't hang on the Browns' absurdly bad 53-man roster as he develops bodes poorly for his NFL future
Nice. And you are right about today's NFL...I don't know if it's because of Roger Goodell, or just the fact that my Browns are a laughing stock, but the league has definately lost some appeal in my book.....I have a #29 jersey too, that I love. But mine says "TOP DAWG" on the back and it was for Hanford Dixon....Ahhh,the good ol days. For me, that was when the Browns were really good, but they would always find a way to rip your heart out at the end... RIP Eric Turner....he was the enforcer....
Wow, ponzi scheme??.lol! Who knew that a little hand injury to Carl Nassib was all we needed to get you to finally give up and go away?? Happy trails, my frustrated little fan...geez.
There's no doubt in my mind that Pryor would be our best option at QB this week if we HAD to win it...But I agree with what the coach is doing. IMO Terrelle Pryor truly looks like he could be a stud NFL wide receiver, and it would be foolish to pull him to a different detail now....I won't be surprised if he gets a snap here and there, but the Browns are being smart about that... As far as Kessler being over-drafted. It's impossible to know that yet. All the amateurs say so, but that means squat. I haven't heard any NFL GM's criticize the Browns for that pick so I'm willing to stay open minded. Kessler's stats absolutely warrant a third round selection, if not higher. If the kid looks good on Sunday, it will give Hue Jackson some MUCH NEEDED validation IMO..We'll find out Sunday if the Browns screwed the pooch on that one.... I've been very critical of the Browns lately for letting Philly slip away with Carson Wentz....I know we had many holes to fill and it's still hard to say which strategy was truly best, but it's been 30 phuquin years since we had a QB to be proud of here. That's CRAZY! Cody Kessler is our guy and I really want him to play great, but make no mistake, Wentz is a stud. That dude was running no huddle from the get last night. His first 6 plays were all passes and he completed ALL of them. All on the road on MNF when the crowd was into it (pre - Cutler)...I understand the caliber of defense Wentz has faced...He's for real. In my mind, Jackson loses a lot of credibility if the guy he told us to "trust him" on, flops....He's pinned himself to RG3 and Kessler....and I don't think the "Third" is gonna be much help....I'm not expecting victory Sunday. But I am expecting to see something. If it looks like Weeden or Quinn...well you all know how that'll go...
On another note regarding QB, the talking heads are saying Kessler is nowhere near ready. My question is how is Whitehurst any more ready? He's a career backup who won't be able to memorize the playbook in a week or two. Kessler has been here since training camp and should at least have the plays down. As for ability between the two, Kessler has the Hue Jackson "seal of approval" and Whitehurst (again) is a career backup. They may as well play Kessler and let him show what he has over a few weeks until RG3 or McCown can come back (unless Kessler does a competent impression of a starting QB).
Marc Sessler Around the NFL Writer Published: Sept. 19, 2016 at 04:49 p.m. Updated: Sept. 20, 2016 at 07:59 a.m. Cleveland's endless quarterback dilemma has served as fertile ground for wiseacres, funnymen and quip-machines since the turn of the century. It's almost entirely deserved, too, because the Browns have swung and missed on roughly 485 signal-callers since their ill-fated return to the league in 1999. Sunday's loss to the Ravens goes down as another ugly footnote, with Baltimore erasing a 20-0 deficit to topple the Browns 25-20 in a game that ended with a Josh McCown interception deep in Ravens territory. McCown played through the affair with a painful injury to his non-throwing shoulder, a setback that will sideline the 37-year-old passer for at least Week 3 and thrust rookie Cody Kessler into the driver's seat as the 26th starting quarterback for the Browns since their reboot. That list includes a rash of forgettable signal-callers, but McCown's words after the game will not soon be forgotten in Cleveland. Nearly breaking down with emotion, the veteran explained to reporters on Sunday why he refused to leave the game: "I think it's just not wanting to not be out there with your guys, you know?" McCown said. "I got a dad and older brother who I know get up and go to work and sometimes they don't feel great, and they go and they grind. And I got two little boys that -- they're playing football now -- and they get hit and they get banged up and I'm trying to teach them what toughness means. So, for me, it's those things -- and just knowing the window for me right now." In a wild age when sincerity is regularly replaced by snark, McCown is a reminder of another time. Anyone with a father; anyone with children; anyone with something other than a bleak, void canvas inside of them can feel his words. It doesn't change what happened on Sunday -- another Browns loss -- but coaches league-wide strive to find players like McCown: Men who lift up the locker room and, in something increasingly rare in 2016, put the group before themselves. The history under center is ghastly in Cleveland, with the Browns seemingly struggling against a higher power spinning constant streams of dark magic in their direction. McCown on Sunday, though, put all that madness and trouble in the rear-view mirror for one brief moment, pointing up to something brighter.
I said it last year I will say it again . I would climb in a fox hole with McCown . I hope when he hangs up his cleats the Browns are smart enough to keep him around in some capacity . Much Respect for the man .
Hey, Browns fans! I stumbled across this one day and wondered if any of y'all might get a kick out of it. http://doorfliesopen.com/index.php/2016/09/10/one-more-down/
Or in MLB. Remember Steve Garvey (Dodgers/Padres)? Think he had 6 or 7 paternity suits with at least half of them being verified, if I recall correctly.
Kessler: "You have to perform now" Fred Greetham 1:00 PM Cody Kessler has been burning the midnight oil preparing for his first NFL start, but he says it all starts with being ready and then performing. BEREA,Ohio--For some quarterbacks, starting their first NFL game would be a dream come true. However, for Cody Kessler, he says he's more focused on having a positive start to his NFL career. "I haven't looked at it as a dream come true," Kessler said. "For me, I look at it as I want it to be a positive. I want to go out and play my best and do everything possible to help this team win. "Obviously, I've worked very hard to get here, but you have to perform now," he said. "That's what you have to do in this league. They want performance. You want to play your best, be at your best come Sunday. ?For me, just I keep repeating it, but the process throughout the week will help me get there." Kessler will make his first start against as formidable a defensive front four as there is in the NFL. Three of the four arguably, could be considered for the NFL's Hall of Fame someday. Defensive end Mario Williams is third on the NFL's all-time sack list, while the other defensive end Cameron Wake is a four-time Pro Bowl performer. Ndamakung Suh is second among defensive tackles in sacks with 43 since 2010. In the first two games, the Dolphins have knocked the starting quarterback out of the game. Russell Wilson suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener, but he returned. Last week, the Patriots Jimmy Garoppolo left with a shoulder injury and did not return.? That is particularly not good news for the Browns quarterbacks, who lost their first two quarterbacks in two weeks in Robert Griffin III (shoulder) and Josh McCown (shoulder). "They're very physical," Kessler said. "(Miami's) front seven gets after the quarterback. It's going to be a very physical game up front and our offensive line is great. "You have to be smart with (the ball)," Kessler said. "You can't hold on to the football. You ?don't want to hold on to the football, especially as physical as their front seven is. They create havoc in the backfield and they can get after the quarterback." Dolphins coach Adam Gase said the Dolphins ?defensive front hasn't been able to get after the quarterback as much they'd have liked to in the first two games.? ?I think it?s tough in the fact that if you do get behind and you got a group of those guys coming at you in waves and the speed that they bring, then if you become one dimensional, it really becomes a challenge," Gase said. "Obviously, we haven?t been able to do that really, yet. That?s what one of our things coming into the season was, ?How do we put our defense in position to where they can pass rush?? "Hopefully, we can eventually get this going, as far as we?re more balanced overall as a team," he said. "I think that group though, when they get an opportunity to go close out a game, 2-minute drills, or if we?re up by a number of points where they can pass rush and can really make a change in the game in the early fourth quarter, third quarter ? that?s what we are looking for.? ?Kessler said he believes his preparation this week will help him in his first start. He said he's been in Berea studying the video and preparing until 10 pm the previous two nights. Kessler said he wants to make the most of his opportunity as the Browns starter. "When you get an opportunity, I want to give myself the best chance to take advantage of of this opportunity," he said. "You always want to get better. That's the plan at everything you do in life. "I just want to continue to work and a lot of that will be due to my preparation this week," he said. "I've taken it very seriously and I've spent countless hours in this building and I want to make sure I have no questions and that nothing will take my off guard and I'll be able to expect anything."? Extra Points Gordon's Latest Situation won't Affect Current Suspension: A news report surfaced that WR Josh Gordon has been named in a paternity suit, but a league spokesman said that would have no bearing on his current suspension. Gordon is serving a four-game suspension and is eligible to return to the field for the fifth game against the Patriots on oct. 9. Erving Thankful: OL Cameron Erving was back in the building an grateful to be feeling better. "I'm feeling better and am just happy to be back in the building today," Erving said. "It was a crazy experience, but I'm just happy to be back in the building and looking forward to next week." Erving wouldn't speculate on how long he might be out, rather deferred all questions to Hue Jackson.? Charlie Practicing: Veteran QB Charlie Whitehurst was on the practice field Wednesday after signing with the Browns Tuesday night. Kessler said he met Whitehurst Tuesday and has been helping him learn the Browns offense as quickly as possible. Whitehurst is expected to be the backup to Kessler on Sunday. Several Out: After having all 53 players on the roster practicing last week, the Browns started the week missing QB Josh McCown (shoulder), OL Cameron Erving (bruised lung), DL Carl Nassib (hand) and DB Ibraheim Campbell (hamstring). Campbell was on the side working with trainers and McCown was watching practice with owner Jimmy Haslam early in practice.
Heck, every sport would be in trouble...Remember Shawn Kemp? Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie? We could go on and on....I think Kemp had 9 children with 9 different women if I remember correctly...
Getting "one's wick wet" is a whole lot better than getting popped on another drug test. And it ain't illegal unless you use a rag and chloroform, etc. Maybe Stopper objects since it occurred outside of wedlock. :-*
My only problem is he will b arrested again and its been over a yr since he culd have taken the test...hes trouble and its not needed...go away Josh
