Red Right 88.... good call Lym. I knew something was missing.... That's the play that started all these decades of "fun" for us..... A couple other horrifying debacles that stick in my memory: 1985...We win the division at 8-8. Nobody respects the Browns as they roll into Miami for the divisional playoff round as huge underdogs to Dan Marino and the Dolphins. But the Browns get out to a shocking 21-0 third quarter lead.....You know how the story ends. Marty was Marty. We watched in agony as Marino brought the fish all the way back...Miami 24, Browns 21 .....The crazy thing is, had we held on, the Browns would have hosted the Patriots (a team they had already beaten in the regular season) in the AFC Championship the following week. Yep, that's right, it was that close to us being crushed in SB XX by the Bears.... Then of course there's the somewhat similar playoff comeback the Steelers put on the "new era" Browns in the Kelly Holcomb game. I'm pretty sure we blew a 24-7 lead in that one...This was a little worse than the Dolphins game maybe because it was in Pittsburgh....We really had them on the ropes. Butch Davis's defense couldn't hold back Tommy Maddox. smh....That one stung because Tommyboy was a career bust up to that point, yet we made him look like Johnny Unitas....it was awful.... Nobody knows misery quite like SB era Browns fans....I can't even imagine what it was like back in the glory days of this franchise... Hue Jackson.....you have your work cut out.
Hell, if you just want to make it a "misery" list, don't forget to throw Don Rodgers in there too. And don't forget Ernie Davis.
The attitude had nothing to do with his game film, it was leaving his teammates out to dry at the end of the season when they needed him in their bowl game. Instead of playing in the bowl December 29th, he decided it was in his best interest to start getting ready for the draft process by having his sports hernia surgery on December 22nd. It hit me as a "me first attitude". He only needed to wait one week longer to have the 4-6 week recovery surgery...which would have had him back to 100% before the combine, regardless. Obviously, that's your opinion on Fuller...but I did base THAT PART on film, and Fuller looked like a better receiver on film...It wasn't my original thought on the receiver position, in fact I had Fuller rated around #5 before I started studying film...ended up #2/3 on my list behind Treadwell, then pretty close to Doctson, depending on what type of receiver you are looking for. Talent level above Coleman, then his injury decision took him off my board. I don't want a guy that gets a hang nail and decides it's better for his career to sit and heal rather than be out there battling.
Here's a scary stat even by Cleveland Browns standards.....This Sunday the Browns will start their 5th different quarterback in the last 5 games! Manziel Davis RG3 McCown Kessler That's gotta be an NFL record...One that could only happen in Cleveland.
I heard the Browns fired a scout, record 0-2, 2 QB's already done for and it's only week 3. The Browns really need to do the right thing and lose out. Im not talking 3-13, 2-14, I'm taliking 0-16. They have already shown that they are not afraid of trading down. Get the top pick and absolutely pillage a team. This team needs C,RT,OLB,ILB,CB,FS and SS then after all that they need a QB. That's 8 upgrades this team needs to draft to become relevant in this league. Trading down would give them more picks to work with. Hue Jackson is now on standby. He told us "We will like Kessler" Sashi just fired the scout that told him to skip Wentz. That means Jacksons name is all over Kessler. This is a 3rd rd pick we are talking about. I like the Coleman, Nassib and Ogbah picks. But not impressed with the others. Kessler could be the beginning of the end for Jackson.
1. You have no idea what the circumstances were. Briles might have insisted he get it done. 2. I'm not sure how he left his teammates out to dry. They were playing for nothing. It's not like a championship was on the line. 3. You don't know the extend of the injury. Maybe playing 4 games with it (you know being there for his teammates) made it much worse and there was some risk involved. To form the kind of opinion you have over one decision that you were really in the dark about seems like a bit of a stretch, especially considering some of the guys you have championed in the past, specifically Johnny Rotten. And let's not pretend it was only his attitude. You said... I only care because I made the Steve Smith comparison in January and you basically laughed at it. I didn't even respond. I just waited and when the off-season came who did his teammates compare him too? Yep, the same guy. Your evaluation of Coleman couldn't have been worse Irish. Just own it. I don't have a problem with Fuller. I didn't like his hands coming out but you can't teach speed. I think O'Brien will get a lot out of him but I see Fuller as a Desean Jackson/Mike Wallace type. Will make some big plays but when it's 3rd and long and you need to move the chains he's not going to go take the ball away from someone. I see Coleman as a Steve Smith / Antonio Brown type. A go-to guy who can do it all and will snatch the ball out of the air. Fuller just doesn't have Coleman's total skillset. But he can certainly have a nice career. To some extent it can come down to personal preference I guess. I've always argued that the receiver I want on my team is the guy when it's 3rd and long and everyone knows who it's going to can still win and move the chains for you. That's not Fuller and maybe it won't be Coleman but that's where I see his ceiling.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there's a "good chance" Josh McCown's shoulder injury will cost him "multiple games." NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Browns are not planning to place McCown on injured reserve, but that rookie Cody Kessler will get an "extended look." Kessler didn't look anywhere near ready to play in preseason games. His presence under center is a huge concern for Cleveland's skill-position players. That includes Josh Gordon, who is scheduled to come off suspension in Week 5.
Screw that. Just draft a freakin' QB, hell draft two of them. I've probably argued the same thing as you in the past but it's time to fill that spot with some talent. As many picks as the Browns have they could bat .500 and still pick up some nice talent around him. It's not like he's going anywhere. Including back-to-back franchise tags they could hold his rights for 7 years. If they haven't filled the roster with enough talent to help him by then what will it matter? p.s. I hope you guys are all rooting for the Steelers next Sunday. You want the Eagles to lose as many games as possible. Say it with me now, "Go Steelers!!!!"
BEREA, Ohio ? Another week, another Browns starting quarterback down with a left shoulder injury in Josh McCown. And now, the Browns are starting a rookie at quarterback in third-round pick Cody Kessler. Barring a veteran quarterback coming in and taking over, Kessler will be the 26th quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999. McCown, 37, is out indefinitely with the left shoulder injury suffered during Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Ravens, and Kessler will start Sunday against the Dolphins in Miami. McCown follows in the footsteps of Robert Griffin III, who's out at least 8-12 with a fractured left shoulder. "Trust me, here we come,'' Hue Jackson said, playing off his draft day remarks to have faith in him on what seemed like a reach in the third round for Kessler. "We'll see what that statement was all about." Jackson said McCown is week-to-week with his injury, but a league source told cleveland.com he's likely to miss multiple games. As a result, the Browns will look to add a veteran quarterback as soon as possible. The Browns are embarking on a grueling stretch of four of their next five games on the road, and they're already in the process of looking for an experienced quarterback. As for McCown, who had the Browns up 20-0 in the first quarter and in position to win at the end, Jackson was vague about the nature of the injury and the timeframe for his return. "I know it's a shoulder/clavicle injury, (but) I don't know that it's totally broken,'' Jackson said. "I don't think that. But I know that there's something that's not right. I think it's more of a deep sprain at this time than anything. But I don't think there's anything totally broken.'' Jackson refused to speculate on when he'll back. "Some people heal faster than others,'' he said. "Some people can toughen things out. We'll evaluate after next week.'' McCown was one of three costly injuries suffered in the game. The others were center Cam Erving, who suffered a bruised lung and is likely out about a month, and rookie defensive end Carl Nassib, who suffered a broken hand and will undergo surgery. The Browns hope to get Nassib back before long, even if he's in a cast. Jackson complimented McCown for gutting it out in the loss to the Ravens despite initially suffering the injury in the first quarter. "He's one of the toughest human beings I've seen play in a long time,'' said Jackson. "He's always out there battling and he showed tremendous grit hanging in there and playing the way he did. He played as well and hard as he could. I told our team we've got to do everything we can to protect our quarterback. It's tough.'' Jackson was reluctant to name Kessler the starter, initially saying "there's a good chance'' he'll do so. But then he caved when asked what his other options are. "Me. Nah, just kidding. It'll be Cody,'' Jackson said. "Obviously he's the next guy up. Cody will be out there playing, there's no doubt about that. But I'd like to go through the game plan, watch a lot more of Miami and put together an offense that has a chance to go out and compete.'' Jackson said he won't wait for the prognosis on McCown before signing another quarterback. Aside from Kessler, the Browns' only other quarterback in the building is rookie Kevin Hogan, who's on the practice squad. "Regardless what the situation will be with Josh, it's important we get another arm on our football team as fast as we can,'' he said. "It's too important. Too many things can happen this weekend." Veteran quarterbacks on the street are scarce. Some of the available ones include Michael Vick and Jimmy Clausen. Jackson likes former Browns quarterback Jason Campbell, but he declined an opportunity to come out of retirement last season. The Browns also have Terrelle Pryor, who played quarterback for Jackson at Oakland. But he's firmly entrenched at receiver and the Browns probably don't want to rock that boat. That's why Jackson tap-danced around the topic of Kessler starting, almost as if he were leaving himself some wiggle room. "I really want to get through this day and kind of see where we are and see what else is out there before I even say this is exactly what we're doing,'' said Jackson. "That's not towards Cody at all. You've got to have a couple of quarterbacks on your football team. We're going to go and see if we can find someone. (But) Cody will definitely get a chance to trot out there and go play.'' As for who would back up Kessler, Hogan or Pryor, Jackson said, "it's too early to make that decision. We'll do what we have to do. Somebody's going to play under center there or we're going to get in the single wing, one or the other.'' Kessler, who worked mostly with the third-team offense through training camp, will have tall order Sunday in Miami. The Dolphins have a formidable defensive line on which three of the four starters have a combined 12 Pro Bowls. "I wouldn't want it to be this way, but it's going to be good to get out and see him play,'' said Jackson. "Pretty soon maybe I'll be playing, and I say that in all fun. But that's the nature of the sport. We're going to get a chance to see Cody play, and we wish it wasn't like this, but this is how it is." Kessler acknowledged that Jackson didn't exactly tell him yet that he's starting. "The only thing he said to me was 'be prepared. Stay ready,''' he said. "That's all I can do is continue to go with that and prepare this week and continue my process. That's something since minicamp I wanted to do, prepare as the starter and be ready to go."
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns rookie defensive end Carl Nassib broke his hand during Sunday's 25-20 loss to the Ravens and will undergo surgery, a league source confirmed for cleveland.com. The timetable for his return is uncertain at this point. He suffered the break, first reported by NFL Network, midway through the third quarter and did not return. His last drive was the one that ended on a Joe Haden interception with 7:35 left in the third. It's not known exactly when he suffered the injury. He was taken to the locker room, where X-rays confirmed the fracture. Nassib had just cracked the starting lineup on Sunday after his breakout performance against the Eagles in the opener. In that game, Nassib had a three tackles, a sack and a pass batted down at the line. Nassib was one of three big losses for the Browns on Sunday in a game in which they blew a 20-point first-quarter lead. Josh McCown suffered a left shoulder injury that's expected to keep him out awhile, and Cam Erving suffered a bruised lung that will likely keep him sidelined for at least a month. He was released from University Hospitals Monday morning and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. The Browns are already without Robert Griffin III for a minimum of 8-12 weeks. There's a chance, however, that he'll miss the season. Nassib, the third-round pick out of Penn State, wasn't on the field for the first play of Sunday's game, but moved up to starting end on the depth chart last week and played most of the snaps until he left the game. "We don't really give anybody nothing,'' said coach Hue Jackson. "You have to earn it, and he's playing well. He really is. He's doing some good things, and any player that plays the game the way we want them to play should be rewarded for that so he is. "He's one of the starters on our football team, and I always look forward to watching him play because he plays with a passion, energy and tenacity that I think you have to play this game with." In Nassib's absence, the Browns have Xavier Cooper, Stephen Paea, John Hughes and Tyrone Holmes.
Beach, I gotta agree with that breakdown of Coleman. He looks like much more than just a burner that goes deep. I thought his second TD really showcased what you were talking about. He took the quick screen and did it all on his own. He looked good... I had Treadwell #1, and I kept flipping Coleman and Doctson back and forth at #2 and #3....I had the same concerns about Fuller as you, but It's not easy trying to predict who will do well. Of course alot depends on circumstance. Based on what we witnessed yesterday, I think Coleman certainly showed that he can be dangerous regardless of how you get him the ball...Much more than a one trick pony. Not sure about the injury situation at Baylor, but I didn't notice any animosity from teammates or fans, for whatever that's worth. Briles had nothing but great things to say about him through the draft process, I know that... If we get a QB in Cleveland someday, I feel certain that Corey Coleman will be a great player.....He's a talented young man with some amazing God given ability...The Steve Smith comparison isn't bad, but Corey is bigger, stronger and faster...
Not sure what your agenda is beach...I know exactly what I said. Difference is that was before he was a Cleveland Brown and regardless of how I felt, I hope to hell I am 100% wrong. I don't have an innate need to be right. I want what is best for the Browns, period, end of story and I'm not going to get into a pissing match talking smack about a current Browns player...so you can go ahead and get off my shit after a great game played by Coleman. I really don't know what you want me to say here. I'm not going to eat crow after a single game, I still haven't seen him throw blocks like Steve Smith has done his entire career and was the crux of the whole argument against the comparison. I hope like hell he catches 100 yards a game, with at least a TD and steps it up for 200 yards and 3 TD average against the Steelers AND blocks downfield for our other players when his number isn't called on a play...what do you want from me??
I wouldn't sweat it Irish, he's just giving it to the ND fan. You were higher on Fuller than most, and Beach has a good memory evidently....Do you know how much shit I took for my ratings of Ohio State players through the draft season? lol! Who cares...Plus Fuller looks like a stud so far too... Who knows how we'll look at it 3 years from now... I told everyone that Adolphus Washington would be a first round pick. lol!...He wasn't, but so far he's playing like perhaps he should have been...It all good. The one Buckeye I was lowest on (Michael Thomas) looks like he could be the best of the class...(i would like to point out however that I changed that opinion and drafted Thomas with my final pick in fantasy league, soooo, jus sayin) We all love the draft process and if we didn't throw our opinions out, what fun would it be? for all we know at this point, you may be right about Fuller...
