  3. I just saw the video of Coleman making Gilbert look like a school girl, lol. I already know that the DB's are really bad so I'm trying not to get to excited about Pryor and Coleman abusing them. Having a bad defensive backfield and no pass rush is not the ingredients of a winning football team.

To me either Gilbert and Mingo perform or cut them. Haslam and the Browns have a chit load of money to do that. Next year CB , Saftey and OLB are my top 3 picks.

I dont think the offense will be the problem, it will be DEFENSE. Can't build Rome in 1 day so hopefully the "MONEY BALL" guys go defense early and often next year.

    RG III is #1

Not sure how I feel about it. It seemed like the comments I saw throughout camp and prior were tepid; the usual, about how he's doing all he can, showing leadership, blah blah blah....
Never saw the conviction that he was "really outplaying" his counterparts.

He doesn't have to, of course, because nobody thought Kessler was challenging him, and no body cared about McCown, so it strikes me as the default position. More interesting will be what they do behind him.

If they let McCown go, then it shows greater belief in RGIII, or maybe just a combination of believing Kessler can be coached up, and McCown has value as trade bait. I don't know. I think Keeping McCown for all the things he brings, is the right move, from the perspective of this season, while we sort out if RGIII can truly "do it", and evaluate the Kessler experiment. McCown is rock solid, and is clearly the guy who is the "go to" guy in the QB room, when questions come up for the O.

I don't see the down side to keeping him, Austin can go, and Josh will never make waves among the others, while actually doing his best to help them learn and develop.

Here's hoping the RGIII resurrection, is a success. Go Browns

It was only a matter of time before Hue named RG3 the starter. All indicators pointed that way, and it was really just a formality making it official...I don't have a problem with it. We aren't going to build around a 38 year old QB, and McCown was the only real competition. So now we move forward with everyone on the same page. A refreshing change of pace from the usual dysfunction and confusion...

After watching Saturday's practice or scrimmage or whatever that was, I am much more concerned about the defense at this point. Usually at this time of training camp the defense has the edge, but it did not look like that in our case....

I expect our offense to keep getting better and better as they get more in tune with Hue Jackson's system, but the defense is obviously an issue. The secondary looks uninspired and I haven't heard much of anything about Emmanuel Ogbah....The last time the Browns had a good pass rush in my lifetime was.....hmmmmm......well, they never really have. Lets hope Hue isn't only paying attention to the offense...The defense is of major concern.

Reggie Camp had 14 sacks and Clay Matthews had 12 way back in 1984. And they were still 17th in the NFL for sacks.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that American gymnast Simone Biles looks like RG3?

lol! Yeah I noticed RG3's kid sister.....

Seriously though fellas, I know there have been flashes here and there. Jerry Sherk, Lyle Alzado, Clay Mathews, Chip Banks, Michael Dean Perry, are just a few that come to mind... I mean it's not like we have never had a pass rusher....I just can't remember a time when you could honestly say that pass rush was a team strength in Cleveland.....Hell, with Dixon and Minniefield, if we'd have had ANY kind of pass rush, our Browns would have had a Super Bowl or two, without a doubt.......

Well, the Browns have only had 40 sacks four times since their return:
In 2000, Chris Palmer HC/Romeo Crennel did it
In 2001, Butch Davis HC/Foge Fazio made it back to back..then a drought...

Eric Mangini HC/Rob Ryan DC did it in 2009

    and...

The last time Ray Horton was here...

Prior to that they did it consistently:
    1994: 48, 3rd in NFL
    1993: 48, 8th
    1989: 45, 5th
    1985: 44
    1984: 43

So over a decade, they hit 40 sacks 5 times...during that time they never dipped below 35 in a season..

during the return, they have consistently been in the 20's in sacks, bottoming out at 17 sacks in 2008...

The last two years since Horton they have had 31 ('14) and 29 ('15)

I'm ready to get back to 40+ sacks...

Thanks for doing the homework on that, Irish. Rather sad isn't it. However, they had a good solid secondary back in the Dixon/Minnifield days to make up for their league average sack totals. That and they were tough inside the 20.

So, I'm guessing since they took all these WR's in this year's draft, they may do the same with DB's in next year's if the secondary fails to show up this season.

I agree Doug. It won't surprise me a bit if the focus turns to defense next year, and in particular, the secondary....

Good work Irish. I would have never guessed that we finished in the top 10 in sacks that many times. Third in the league in 1994?!! Wow. I'm trying to think of who was puting up the numbers back then (without looking it up)....Anthony Pleasant?

Actually some Stick-em and a lack of prevent defensive plays would have done the trick.
