Tom DeLeone, a longtime NFL center and two-time Pro Bowler, has died after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 65. The Browns, DeLeone?s team from 1974 to 1984, confirmed his death this morning. DeLeone was born and raised in Ohio and spent his football career there. An All-American at Ohio State, DeLeone was a fifth-round draft pick of the Bengals in 1972 and played his first two seasons in Cincinnati, but he was mostly a long snapper and rarely got on the field. DeLeone?s best seasons were in Cleveland, where he was chosen to the Pro Bowl in 1979 and 1980. In 2011, DeLeone went public with his battle with brain cancer. DeLeone, who lost his first wife to cancer in 1976, just a year after they were married, stayed active after his cancer diagnosis and said, ?I?m not giving in to this.? DeLeone lived more than five years after his brain cancer diagnosis. He is survived by his second wife, whom he married 38 years ago, and their three children.
Yes they are Lym...I heard something on the radio today that made a lot more sense than tanking... Hartline is 29 and last year missed 4 games to injury. They will need to make tough roster decisions based on projections... The comments were based on the fact that the coaching staff has now had 3 days of rookie mini camps and 3 more days of the OTA this past weekend. Over those 6 days, it could be evaluated that there were other roster players that would "more than likely" contribute as a #3 or #4 receiver. If that is the case, they would be vying for the same spot as Brian Hartline. Many perceive Coleman to be one receiver, then Hawkins, the other 3 rookies and Terrell Pryor as the others vying for spots... Broken down, if they perceive the talent level to be par. Then Hartline, by a large margin, has the highest salary of all the receivers. If he is perceived as the #3 or #4 receiver, then the salary simply isn't worth it. Taking that into account, and that the salary was only guaranteed due to injury, moving on from him now rather than later made a ton of sense.
Your explanation requires a modicum of fore thought and common sense, Irish. PFT's explanation only requires being an asshole.
Kicker Jaden Oberkrom?s stay with the Browns wasn?t a long one. The Browns claimed Oberkrom off of waivers from the Jaguars on Wednesday, but their search for a kicker to go with Travis Coons on the offseason roster will have to continue. The team announced Friday that Oberkrom has been placed on the reserve/retired list. There?s been no word about why Oberkrom, who was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist three times during his career at TCU, has decided to give up on his pursuit of a professional football career. Should he decide to reverse course, the Browns will still hold his rights. The Browns also announced that they have signed wide receiver Dennis Parks to their 90-man roster. Parks had 97 catches for 1,507 yards and eight touchdowns in 46 games at Rice. He spent a few days with the Packers earlier this month.
Exactly what they were saying... a $3.7M average receiver is much more expensive than a: $1.671M average Terrelle Pryor (with more upside) >$600K..any or all of the rookies, whether they are average or turn into an everyday starter, they may turn into a below average player, but you have a very small investment to find out...the finding out part is over and done with Hartline. He had his small window and had an admirable career, his arrow is never going to be pointing up...
Hawkins has a higher cap # and was hurt all last season . if anybody should have went it should have been the smurph .
Except that Hawkins played in Hue's offense down in Bengal Land before we picked him up as a FA. Gotta go with the guy who knows the system and who can teach it to the new crop of WR's. Wouldn't be surprised if Hawkins gets cut sometime during pre-season after the new guys get up to speed.
Not accurate bluez... Hartline was at a $3.7M cap...now he is still costing $750k in dead money.. But Hawkins is only $1M this year and $1.8M next, and no dead money if they decide at anytime to cut him, which as Duff already stated, could still very well happen. Right now there are 11 WRs on this team...12 if Gordon gets reinstated...so there will plenty more time to cut "the smurph"...the difference between he and Hartline is that Hartline's money becomes guaranteed if he gets injured...if you know he won't be a part of the 53 man roster, cut him now before he has a chance to get hurt.
Just being curious here...... Anybody know what the average age is for the Browns and how that compares to other NFL teams? I was just thinking that with this year's turn over and the abundance of draft picks in the next 2 drafts, they ought to have a lot of younger players with 3-4 years or less experience on the roster by 2018. If things pan out, they may be setting themselves up for a good 8-10 year window (or longer) to win it all.
I would guess right now they average around 20th in terms of age...as soon as they cut Josh McCown they will shoot up to 1st.... Just kidding, that is an interesting thought Duff. I would have to say they rank right up there in youth. If this regime can get everyone to buy into the system, I would agree they are setting themselves up nicely to have a team together for a decade or better.
Few college football players have suffered an injury as devastating to their NFL prospects as former Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, who was viewed as a first-round prospect before blowing out his knee before the 2015 Rose Bowl and ultimately fell all the way to the seventh round. Ekpre-Olomu hasn?t played in an NFL game yet, but he says he?s now been given a clean bill of health. Ekpre-Olomu told the Miami Herald that his doctor ?said I?m perfectly fine.? The Browns waived Ekpre-Olomu this offseason, suggesting that the new regime in Cleveland doesn?t believe his knee is ever going to be perfectly fine. But he was claimed by the Dolphins on waivers and says he?s happy where he is. ?It was something with new management; they wanted to go in a different direction,? Ekpre-Olomu said of the Browns. ?And I guess I wasn?t in that direction. I?m happy I?m here.? If Ekpre-Olomu ever returns to the form that he showed at Oregon, the Dolphins will be happy to have him in Miami, too.
RBs coach Kirby Wilson said the Browns will be a "run-oriented football team." "Everything starts with the run game, our offensive line and our backs," Wilson continued. "As coach told us, we are going to be a physically dominant, running football team." Hue Jackson led offenses have not finished worse than 7th in rushing attempts since he took over as offensive coordinator for Oakland in 2010. With the quarterback situation in flux, there is no reason to change that formula this year. Even in a timeshare, Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson should see plenty of work.
Happy Memorial Day Lounge Houndz *YAHOO* I've got a moment and thought I'd check in. The new job is going well my first project is due Wednesday and should be done on time.
