I only need to say one thing: He has 10 7/8 " hands... Naw, seriously though...We are looking at the absolute best backup QB in the draft. It tells me that Hue Jackson believes in RGIII and they only want to rely on McCown for one season at the most...if they don't outright trade him now. Kessler is a very smart QB that can play in a pro system, and by smart, I mean he is smart with the football. He isn't going to win you 12 games, but he isn't going to lose you ANY games...perfect fit for a backup QB. I think Kessler will be the Browns backup for the next 12 years. Kind of high of a pick for a backup, but as I said...he was the best at his position, "backup" QB...So, last pick in the 3rd round or first pick of the 4th round, doesn't make much difference.
There''s one sure-fire way to make recruiting much easier moving forward. Just have 10 players (TEN!) get drafted in the first two days of the NFL Draft. Ohio State set a record for most players taken within the first three rounds of the draft sending a ridiculous double-digit group into the pros through Saturday. More than 10 percent of all players taken in the first three rounds of the draft were from Ohio State. The 2016 NFL Draft was a walking billboard for Meyer's program.
I agree with a lot of this. Did they overspend? Possible, but it's Hue's hand picked guy so give the coach what he wants after a trade back that acquires more goods. I think it shows they are willing to be patient and get the quarterback that they want and it assures RGIII that there will be no real pressure in competition for the spot this season giving him an immediate comfort level.
When I was studying up on the QB's for the mock drafts, I didn't give Kessler much of a look. He had sub par arm strength and a considerable drop off in production his final year at USC... I've mentioned "coaching change" countless times as an excuse for Cardale Jones' struggles, so I guess I gotta consider that for Kessler as well...I laughed at my friend the other day when he mentioned Kessler to me as a target for the Browns. Being that he's a big USC fan, I didn't even consider it..I'm pretty sure I used a showstopper term on Kessler and called him a"noodle arm" lol! Oops....
I would have preferred that they went after Hogan or Prescott as I think the potential is there for future starters but I understand the pick to a degree.
Kessler is somewhat of a head scratcher but I guess it's what Hue and the Nerds are paid to do. I was in the same boat as Tim thinking Hogan might have been the pick later on. But I can't say much as I haven't seen much of Kessler. You throw in the fact we had three picks in the 3rd round and pretty much the Nerds had a one of those slated as a "just for chits and giggles" pick on a QB. If they had him possibly getting picked by someone else prior to our next pick, then I have to say "why not use one of the extra 3rd rounders?"
I also agree with your earlier comment TD. He may just be our solid backup with more upside than Davis and Shaw. In the mean time, it looks like Hue has settled on RG3 as our QB and believes he can fix the kid. And he still has McCown, who was quite serviceable last year, in case of injury or failure of RG3. If all else fails, they have (2) 1sts, (2) 2nds, and (2) 3rds in next years draft to move up to #1 for their QB if they don't outright earn that slot anyway.
At least we didn't trade back up and use the pick on a kicker. Why would Tampa burn a 2nd on a K? Didn't the Jets do that a few years back? And the Raiders used a 1st on Sebastian "Fat Kicker" Janikowski back in 2000.
*SHADES* Now I'll just have to help Lym drink all of that Leghumper that Tim's buying *DRINK* I'll admit I'm not sure any of us saw the Kessler pick coming. He's Hues guy though so we'll see how our QB whispering HC coaches him up. Like others I too was thinking Hogan was the guy they wanted.
Not just spending a second rounder on a kicker, but trading up to do it! I can't explain that one.....very strange. I was kidding the guys in the mock that he sounds like a middle weight fighter from the 80's.. Can you hear Michael Buffer now? "AAAAND IN THIS CORNER.....WEIGHING IN AT 176 POUNDS....A CHAMPION WHO NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION.....FROM SOUTH MIAMI BEACH FLORIDAAAA..........LET'S HEAR IT FOR.....ROBERTOOOOOO AGUAAAAAAAAYOOOO!!!" i can't get enough of that....
Ugh. All right, my two cents on Kessler. I think -- and it's probably a Moneyball/Analytics move -- that more and more NFL teams will be taking backup QBs in R2 - R3. There is just such a shortage of quality back-ups in the NFL (as well as quality starters), so from that standpoint, it makes sense. Robert Griffin and Josh McCown both have injury history and there's no guarantee either are 100% available this season. Again, makes sense. As far as the prospect, I'll take Hue's word and "trust him", but to me, Kessler looked like a priority free agent. Very below-average arm strength and his positive (accuracy, stressed repeatedly by Hue) is due to being a Captain Checkdown. He's an under-sized game manager. Just tough to get excited by the pick, even if they're needed. If we kill it on 99 and 100 to start today, all will be forgotten.
To Tim and Duff...I wouldn't rule out getting the "project" future starter...Kessler fills the need of backup, since McCown is 38 years old and also might possibly net you a 6th round draft pick...Would anyone here basically trade McCown for Cardale Jones or Kevin Hogan now that Kessler is in the fold? Could be the plan if they last long enough for the analytics to kick in and say it is now a marginal deal.
Too cute IMO. Can't see picking a back up then following that with a project QB, while giving up a solid soldier, you know you can count on both on field and in the QB room. McCown has value as trade bait, but also has value on the roster. I don't know a lot about RGIII, but I'm going out on a limb and saying he isn't the "team guy" McCown is. Josh has demonstrated his willingness and even an aptitude to be a good mentor, and in this case RGIII will have his hands full just getting the system down himself, so Josh can be the new guy's mentor. Win / Win Losing Josh, weakens both RGIII, and our shinny new QBs development IMO. Don't see that as a productive move, but I'm not he money ball guy.
Ask Minny what they wuld do 4 a stud kicker like Jano or Aguayo....Jano is a beast and Aguayo will b beast....FSU produced great kickers...Jano, Gano, Hopkins and now Aguayo
The other Josh Whats up with Gordon. Is he really living with Johnny "used to be" Football? God I hope not. Can he stay MJ free for 3 months and show us he actually wants to be a football player, not a blunt toker? Logic dictates for any reasonable human being: drop the weed, focus for 5 years on football, collect the money and then GO CRAZY. But get money first. Put your toking on hold. Can you do it Josh? Honestly, if this guy's my asset, I have someone working with/on him constantly. Show him the prize, "see the prize Josh, see yourself holding the prize, be the prize........"
I would have agreed with this 100% back in December. I remember when Hue Jackson was hired though, he was asked in an interview about Josh McCown possibly mentoring a young QB in the upcoming draft, his response was that players aren't mentors, that's why we put a coaching staff together. If we have a player on this roster, his job is to make him better, not someone else, that's what the coach is for. He was very direct and it hit me that McCown probably wasn't long for this roster at his age and salary.
