Duff, you post about scuttle butt that indicates the Browns might seriously pass of taking a QB in round 1, and pick one up later in the draft.

I'm OK with deciding they have enough QB depth and ability to not "need" to go for one of the alleged top 2 guys so early, but what I don't get is the idea of using a pick in one of the next couple rounds to get "a guy" as QB.

I guess I feel like it's a wasted pick most of the time, cause QB's don't play if they don't start, unlike many other positions. It srtrikes me as throwing the pick away, when there would be worthwhile guys positionally who may not end up starters but should be able to play a significant role as special teams, rotational guy, or sub.

I don't know what RGIII will give us this year, but I feel solid with Josh McCown and just don't see percentages in bringing in another "guy" from late in the draft for mop up and a prayer that he could be something more.

I think we can rule out a Super Bowl run this year, so accumulate some picks, get legitimate talent and try to set up to take "the top guy" when we have to go there. I'm not convinced we have to go there this year, and if RGIII plays well we may have another year or more to position ourselves for the top QB pick in the future.

Maybe I'm being niave, but I feel like no one really feels these two guys are odds on favorites to be franchise QBs, so drop the urgency and use your selections wisely.

  3. I'm guessing they will take Cardale at #32....they wanted Goff but the Rams made a bold move...they have RG3 this yr

    Ken -

I just found those and put those out there since I read someone's comments about (if I recall correctly) that it screws the Browns chances of trading out of #2 and/or screwing the Browns from getting the Qb they really wanted after he gets picked at #1. Those were just a couple of "news blurbs".

Who's to say they were picking a QB at #2 to begin with? They have RG3 and McCown is still on the roster. This is a full-out rebuild and is gonna take 2-3 drafts (dear gawd, please let it only be 2 or 3). I have no idea what direction they'll go: DEF, OFF, a bit of both, a QB, no QB, etc.

I really hate this time of year. It's all click bait speculation or some tip "from somebody in the organization who doesn't want to be named." Plain and simple, the Browns need a bunch of players at spots all over the roster. Hopefully they'll get off the damn "draft another QB carousel" when there isn't an exceptional, head and shoulders above all, must draft at #1 QB available. Too many needs and too many good players available for the Browns not to draft BPA or trade down. This year's QB crop sure isn't the answer. So go with BPA and re-assess QB next year in Draft #2 of the re-build.

    Cool Duff.
the second part of my rambling post was posing the question, why does it make "any sense" to draft a QB in the 3rd round on, vs a position player who if he's got any talent will actually play for you?

Put it another way: what if you want Cardale and you believe your shot at him is 4th round or even 3rd round, you pass. Now whoever takes him either makes the scoop of the draft or he doesn't play and is largely forgotten. Now if a year removed you want him? Has his value gone up? I doubt it, so you still avoid over reaching.

I may be all wrong (Irish you can chime in here), but guys taken 3rd round or later rarely are fought over in the NFL, one or two years later, if they didn't play, and no one is drafting Cardale to play 2016.

I just feel using 3rd / 4th round picks for a QB is like kissing your sister.

Hand me a stick. I've got another Dead Horse to beat: Josh Gordon.

Mike Freeman (Bleacher Report) writes that he is surprised that so many teams are not just interested, but apparently very closely interested in Gordon's services.

WTF is wrong with Cleveland? The guy smokes MJ, BFD! Now you can attach all the "you can't count on him, and Idiot comments, which are all true, but "still"......
The guy is an NFL top talent when he's playing and he's yours. Like him, hate him, whatever, business dictates that you support and defend him as your own. the failure of Cleveland's FO, coaching, etc..... is consistently on the wrong end of this. No one has to minimize the actual facts, but he's our boy and we are doing all we can to help him rejoin the team, is the proper answer. Period. That doesn't condemn him, and lets other teams know you still recognize his value.

that is aside from the simple fact that his "convictions" were largely borderline, on a substance that shouldn't even be a part of the testing, or if tested for not penalized. they let him be suspended for codeine. Seriously? Does anyone believe a Dallas player would have been suspended for stupidity, on what was clearly not a drug problem?

I think what Freeman maybe doesn't see or realize is a lot of NFL teams look at how Josh was handled by the League and allowed to dangle in the wind by the Browns, and think they could have had this guy playing all along, or with a few missed games.

I look at Josh Gordon as one of the Franchise's biggest black eyes. Getting his attantion, covering his mis steps, and defending him against the NFL who clearly "bullied" him, with no resistance.

I would like to think that the analytics guys at least understand his value as well as the rest of the league, and ignore the pissing and moaning about how he's let them down. Yes he has, but likewise the Browns have let him swing. Stop this nonsense, use the actual value to make better decision, and remember your assets are to be protected until such time as you release them.

This is a business decision, assigning him a value, but defending and trying to bring that asset out of the darkness of NFL punishment is a requirement for making the most of your asset. Whether it's to trade him or use him, get him out of jail. The testing levels are ridiculous, and even the substance is questionable as to it's impact. He's a dummy. OK, but talented one.

I agree with your point on this. As I said, they have RG3, McCown, Davis and Shaw already. About the only reason to take a QB later in the draft is to upgrade over Davis and Shaw as QB3. They also have to look at replacing McCown soon as he's 36 years old and signed thru 2017 if he lasts that long physically. After those three are accounted for, the question is does RG3 pan out? If yes, then maybe they have their QB for a few years.

I think the "need" for drafting a QB with these 3rd round on picks is in the hopes of getting somebody better than Connor and Shaw and able to replace McCown. This QB would then have a year or two in the system to learn and play should RG3 turn out to be a horrendous disappointment. All of this in hopes of finding the franchise QB in the 2017 or 2018 draft while still collecting some talent at other positions along the way.

  8. U really believe Gordon gives a crap bout the Browns? Wake up and smell the coffee...he's a cancer that doesn't care bout a team atmosphere

  9. Just seen on channel 3 with Jimmy D. that the Browns are shopping that #2 pick but don't want to trade out of the top 10 spots. He also mentioned that the Eagles may be interested. I think they are not drafting in the top 10, I may be wrong though. With all of this talk about trading that #2 pick it sounds like the Browns are not head over heels about Geoff or Wentz or why trade the pick besides getting more picks to rebuild this team. I'm telling you lounge houndz for once I think this may be the best plan. They could draft a QB in the middle rds.

Since I heard this today about not trading out of the top 10, who do you guys feel are your top 10 guys if we do trade down.

    Taking out Geoff & Wentz.

Yes, what I heard was this year's 1st and 3rd and next year's 1st and 3rd for the #2...I believe if Wentz is available. If it's Goff, no deal from the Eagles.

  12. crextin Franchise Player Browns

I was thinking it would take at least two future firsts to complete the trade. I could see that type of deal happening. It would give the Browns extra pick this year and extra pics next year.

Though I'm still not sure the eagles can afford to make the move up. That would be a long wait between picks.

EDIT: Newest Rumor is the deal is for #8, #77, #79 plus next years first and third.

Its silly season rumors flying around . just do the right thing for once . don't pull a Farmer who I still hope has a dawg . a really REALLY big dawg that bites his sorry worthless ass in the crotch *ROSE*

I just still have a hard time envisioning anyone moving up with Cleveland to take a QB. At the very worst, they might have to get ahead of Dallas (#3), which would cost less than #2.

So unless a team like Philly is playing Cleveland and San Diego against one another to find out who will offer less for the pick, I would expect us to stay at #2 and take Jalen Ramsey.

  15. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

It's pretty simple, if the 49ers are getting close to moving Kaepernick to Denver, then there are in reality 3 players for that QB...Cleveland, San Francisco and Philadelphia..(with a very outside shot to the Jets, not enough ammo)

Cleveland could easily be weighing the options of A) QB vs. B) multiple picks...so the QB may not be available if they don't make a deal that Cleveland is comfortable with.

It isn't about moving ahead of the "next targeted team that may take a QB" it's the fact their are multiple teams that may want that one single QB. Cleveland is the highest pick that you can assure yourself of getting that QB.

I can't understand how you don't understand this...

(EDIT:) I'll go one further, if the Cowboys are really interested in getting heir apparent to Romo.. The Browns may decide to get ONE small extra pick and just move down two spots..I bet they would be willing to move down to #4 for say either Dallas #34 or #67 and 2017 3rd rounder...no future first...That's not much to ask if you are Dallas and are convinced one of these guys are a future starter.

  16. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

I don't remember you being this dickish... everything okay?

I'm a smart guy, so I obviously understand how it would happen, as you seem to be trying to lay out. My direct quote -- oddly enough, you quoted and still got wrong -- was "I can't envision".

Putting on the General Manager's hat for a second, I -- as a bad team -- would not put together a ton of assets just to move up to #2 for a QB.

Further, the only QB worth a damn (Goff) is going to be gone at #1, so every other prospect in this draft is about on the same footing... development or reclamation projects.

  17. If the Browns made this trade....who wuld they want at #8?

  18. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Might have something to do with how "dickish" you are being on the other thread...

  19. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

I would say this last part is what has your "vision" is clouding your ability to "envision" this...

Since, despite your opinion on the subject, it is 50/50 at best...seems more like a 60/40 split in favor of Wentz over who is the best prospect. Despite what you have talked yourself into, these two QBs are close in ability..which will appeal differently to each team looking for a QB, but will most likely give the Browns a trade partner no matter who the Rams choose at #1.

  20. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Too many variables to answer that question Stopper. I would say they have a number of players rated higher than the QBs to even consider a trade. If they didn't have those players rated higher than the QBs, they stay at #2 and take the QB...Or Hue Jackson may not be blowing smoke up our asses, and he might actually love RGIII as much as he has said that in public. I have always felt he was just trying to get his confidence level up, but maybe the earth really did move under his feet when they worked him out.

I would love to make this trade and still walk away with Buckner myself.
