  1. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

Four years ago, the Rams were sitting in the same position as the Browns. The team directly ahead of them at #1 overall was picking the top-rated QB. At #2, they had a need at QB but didn't want to pull the trigger. So they traded out for a king's ransom and picked up several very good players.

Four years later, and the Rams need a QB, despite adding some good talent in the years between, including a few different cracks at a QB to man the helm.

Here's the item posted by Irish in "The Mock" thread:

Despite adding that talent (as well as their own picks), the Rams are bad enough to not win consistently but not so bad that they can afford to pick the best QB available... 7-8-9, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9...

...so they had to make a hail mary move like this.

Only time will tell if the move works out, but there's a 90% chance it doesn't (my estimate).

So ask yourself as a Browns fan... do you want to be in that position in four years?

Take the QB left on the board and move on.

    I'm so confused...

So what you are saying is they shouldn't have made the trade with the Skins, but instead should have turned away those draft picks and taken the QB currently on the Browns roster, that you are saying, the Browns should just turn away any offer they might get and take the QB that is left after the Rams pick and move on from the guy on the roster you just signed, despite the fact the Rams should have taken him in 2012?

    Not shocking.

    :p

All I'm saying is that the Rams had a chance to draft a franchise-type QB, but passed in favor of extra picks and are still (four years later) looking for a franchise-type QB.

The Browns would be wise to eschew trade options and pick up a guy who can be that franchise-type QB for you if and/or when Robert Griffin III doesn't work out.

With you rambling on...that's a true statement...

    *WRITE*

So, what you really meant, was a guy that may or not be a franchise-type player, should be the pick, because he may be a franchise-type player and we don't want to end up in the same boat as the Rams, who passed on the franchise-type player that is currently on the roster...but instead take the other franchise-type QB, so we would then have two on our roster, which would be doubly as good as all those players the Rams got the first time around passing on the franchise-type QB...that currently resides on our roster?

    OH...OK...much more clear now...

Buckner and Conklin showed in their matchup that they are both worthy top 10ish prospects. Buckner had the better day but it wasn't anything close to dominating. The tape I saw there alone showed that they both appear ready for the next level. Nothing quite close to guaranteed though, but that can be said for most prospects and it's laughably bad how many 'guaranteed" great prospects fail badly.

There is an obvious physical difference in height and weight, and that is what concerns me most about Goff....I have a hard time thinking of Jared Goff at #2 overall...If Wentz is gone, my preference would be to build defense first and take a QB prospect in the middle rounds...If they can find a team that is in love with Goff, then I'd say take them for all it's worth....

I'd probably rather see them go with Cook at #32 than Goff at #2.....Take the strategy that worked nicely for Hue's Raiders it seems....Get the impact defensive player first...

  8. TopDawg Legend

Of course, all that said, there is still 2 weeks of SAS selling me on Goff remaining......My guess is he will. Then I will be all excited about Goff, and the Browns will go the route I wanted them to go in the first place...lol!

Well the Rams passed on RG3 because they had Bradford. Same reason why Tennessee took less for #1 this year than what Chip Kelly would have given for #2 last year.

So basically you'll take anyone that is expected to go in the top 5 that isn't an O-lineman.

  11. TopDawg Legend

It sure would have been nice to get that haul from the Rams....Ultimately, I guess we could point to Johnny as the reason we didn't.....If it wasn't for our win over Tennessee in week 2, in a game Johnny started and played well, it WOULD have been us sitting at #1 waiting on the King's ransom delivery from L.A.! Damn that little drunk fu*#@$%er!

  12. TopDawg Legend

lol! yep....though I was pretty much blowin smoke. I get that you can make a strong case for us going OT at #2....Hell, I think you could make a strong case for us to go ANY position outside of kickers....

Trade for top pick simplifies Browns decision

    Fred Greetham

The Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans blockbuster trade for the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft just simplified the Browns decision

The job just became simpler for the Browns decision makers.

    I didn?t say easier, I said simpler.

With the trade by the Los Angeles Rams and the Tennessee Titans for the Rams to move all the way from No. 15 in the NFL Draft to the top spot, there is no question the Rams have their eyes set on taking a quarterback.

For all the draft naysayers that have said there isn?t a quarterback in this draft worthy of being the top one or two picks.

    The Rams beg to differ.

They gave up a king?s ransom to make the move but with the franchise starting up again in Los Angeles, the Rams wanted to make a splash.

The question is who do they favor?Jared Goff or Carson Wentz?

There have been reports coming out from both sides stating the case that it could be either one. With the Rams settled now at No. 1 there is little reason for them to not make their intentions known, other than for keeping Goff or Wentz in the dark. With the most recent collective bargaining agreement in the NFL, there is not a lot of room in rookie contract negotiations, thus I expect the Rams intentions will be known before draft day.

If the Browns truly like Goff and Wentz and had trouble deciding between the two, the decision has been taken out of their hands. They simply take the one that is left.

There have been reports that Hue Jackson and Pep Hamilton favor Goff over Wentz and if the prevailing reports are true?that the Rams are planning on taking Wentz?the Browns choice will be made easy.

The biggest decision the Browns are faced with now in the two weeks leading up to the draft on April 28 is whether to take one of the offers from another team to trade down from their second pick or stay at two and take Goff. If the Browns decide to trade down they would be passing up their first legitimate chance since 1999 to land a possible franchise quarterback. Sure, quarterbacks can be found anywhere in the draft but the percentages are much higher of striking gold when the player is taken at the top of the draft.

If the Rams draft Goff instead of Wentz, the Browns can still draft Wentz. I like both of them and think either one can be the quarterback the Browns can build around. If they choose to trade down, they will be drafting the second-tier quarterbacks similar to when they drafted Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden or Johnny Manziel later in the first-round or top of the second.

I personally am gun shy of the ?trade down for a lot of picks? method. I?ve seen too many times when the Browns had a high pick and opted to trade down for multiple picks only to pass a blue-chip player for players that never had an impact, i.e. (Julio Jones for Phil Taylor, Greg Little, Owen Marecic and Brandon Weeden comes to mind).

The signing of Robert Griffin III should not cause the Browns to not draft a potential franchise quarterback. They are rebuilding and starting over with a new coach and front office and they are not going anywhere until they find their quarterback.

The decision is now simpler for the Browns, they just have to get it right.

  17. I heard on 92.3 that the Rams want Wentz. If that is the case then I do see the Browns trading JT for a late 1st and then something extra. I think they will trade him to a contending team.

If that's the case then I to think Tunsil will be the pick. That would give us 3 picks in the top 32.

When talking about trading JT they said having an all world LT hasn't helped this team. That the game is different than 10 years ago. QBs have quicker releases now.

I really do think that the Browns are going to trade that pick or JT. Let's start facing it. The Browns need major players and talented players. Trading that pick for multiple picks is starting to make more and more sense. We don't need 1 player, we need about 3 to 5 players.

The irony is, we just opened a season against each other a couple years back.....Who could forget the day Brandon Weeden got stuck under the big flag, just moments before his debut? lol!...smh

If I remember correctly, that was the ONE shining moment in Trent Richardson's career, as he just destroyed Eagles safety Kevin Coleman on one of his first pro carries, popping Coleman's helmet into the air.....In the end though, it was a true quarterback duel. Philly won by a single point because Weeden managed to throw 5 interceptions versus only 4 from the Eagles' Michael Vick. lol!

I keep reading the Browns will trade down but why would a QB needy team trade with the Browns? The Chargers aren't taking a QB.

Wouldn't getting in front of the 49ers be the most prudent move?
