The new DPL.

  1. Do the Rams pull a fast one on the Browns and say Goff is their guy when they like Wentz and trade down #2 and get back some picks?

Or a trade down for someone that wants Goff...

If we stay and pick, I personally would like DeForest Buckner..If we are truly setting this team up to have an elite defense, he would help make that happen more than any other player in this draft. Putting him beside Danny Shelton would shut down an entire side of the defensive line, and he comes ready made. He is already a 3-4 player at RDE...He knows the system, he already understands double teams and what they mean to creating gap control and opening an edge for a pass rusher. It would elevate this defense immediately. It would also help Nate Orchard, Paul Kruger and possibly even Barko Mingo to excel. If they can get the type of pressure that Ray Horton requires for his defense, all DBs and ILBs will immediately have an easier job as well.

Unless they are trading Joe Thomas, I just don't see value in Tunsil, nor do I see Ramsey helping the pass rush excel, or Jack for that matter...Without the pressure Buckner may be able to enable, either of these players are merely back door help for everyone else around them.

I like Bosa, but like many on here, I worry about his taking off plays and the fact he needs to learn a new scheme.

Buckner makes the most sense in the world of analytics and his skill level is worthy the #2 overall pick.

Not likely...The pick is going to be Wentz, because Wentz is the better QB.

The Browns also may have wanted Wentz, but now that he is gone, they will be looking at other options.

(Edit:) NOW, if the Browns deem Wentz a top talent QB, then they may decide to move up to get him, giving the Rams their Golden Goose Egg California Boy to sell tickets...

I think this is probably the pick if they pass on a quarterback at 2.

Tim, you appear to be a knowledgeable person. If you had the totally awesome lineup of QB's currently on the roster (Griffin, McCown, Austin and Shaw) would YOU pass on a QB at #2 given the fact that they have a master plan in place that, if executed, should remove them from a top 10 pick in a few years ?

I'm a firm believer that you don't draft for THIS year . . . you draft for 2 to 3 years down the road.

I think it depends on how much value you place on the particular player. I believe Goff will be the #1 overall pick and I don't believe Wentz should be the pick at #2. With Buckner, I believe you can solidify a position of importance on the defensive line for over a decade (barring injury obviously) with a potentially special player.

If the Rams were to draft Wentz, I would advocate the Browns taking Goff.

I'd be fine with Buckner...That dude is a monster. Absolutely worthy of consideration at #2....I'd also be good with Ramsey, Jack, Bosa or Elliott.

We need playmakers. We've been trying to build around a cornerstone left tackle for 9 years and it's gotten us nowhere...I will flat out be pissed if they go OL at #2... ..I want somebody that can get after the QB and wreak havoc from a front 7 position, or a hard hitting safety that can create turnovers....If not that, it's gotta be QB or Eze E....Somebody that can score points and give Browns fans hope....Ronnie Stanley and Laremy Tunsil are probably solid players, but I might freak out if one goes to Cleveland at #2....

....just for the record, I'm aware of the importance in having a solid O-line in the NFL...This is a personal preference thing, based on this draft and the Browns' particular needs and circumstances, that has been thought out for some time...

I'm already bummed out that we didn't get the trade with L.A......

  8. Irish from a scheme stand point Buckner makes sense but let's not get carried away w adding him makes their DL upper echelon...they added Shelton last yr and teams still ran the ball at will and Oregon didn't have the best defense in the PAC 12...I watched Conklin dominate him when they played Mich St and that's why I'm so high on him...if Buckner is worthy of a top 10 pick how does Conklin not get the same recognition

  9. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

Conklin should be receiving more recognition and as LAOJoe had related in a previous post in the draft thread, and it's a sentiment that I agree with, that there is very little separating Stanley from Conklin.

But to claim he dominated Buckner in their meeting is incorrect. Buckner routinely overpowered him when they were matched up one on one. Conklin won some, but he in no way, shape or form dominated Buckner.

  10. I watched the draft breakdown video and didn't see Buckner do much at all

  11. SAS M.V.P. Rams Chargers

Both Hue Jackson and Sashi Brown have stressed they will "think long-term" when making a choice at #2 overall.

That can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but it usually means a pick at the QB position.

  12. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

I watched that game too and Buckner did his job taking on double teams, his backers really let him down both in missing tackles and lack of pass rush on the outside. Conklin can not be given credit considering the sheer number of double teams the Spartans used (12) against Buckner and there is this:

I charted the plays they actually went against each other..43 plays

Conklin won 9 times one on one, made Buckner look silly (Pancake) on one.
They tied/had little impact on the play on 8
He was double teamed 12 times, but 2 of his 5 tackles came against a double team.
Buckner beat Conklin, either by tackle, funneling the runner towards scheme driven play or QB pressure 14 times...He beat Conklin despite a double team twice for a tackle, and a 3rd tackle he blew Conklin up for a behind the line loss.

Now, these were only the plays that Conklin was involved in...The others were consistently made to look silly, especially when trying to take Buckner on alone.

I give the Spartans credit, as they held him to 1 tackle below his average, for 5 total...but they didn't hold him back at all like you are alluding to.

...Despite this, I hold Conklin in high regard...I would love to have him if he miraculously slid to #32, but that isn't going to happen.

  13. Lym I agree with your thinking. I also like Conklin. Bosa is the most gifted DL. I think he can play inside or out. I haven't watched a lot of Buckner. If healthy Jack would be my pick. Blitzing OLBs don't come around to often. L. Taylor was a #2 pick. Although Jack is not LT (yet). Considering a position of need Ramsey may be my pick also.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a trade down then drafting a QB in the middle RDS.

  14. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

That is a possibility that should not be discounted either.

  15. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

You need to go watch some tape on Jack...he isn't a "blitzing OLB" like LT...LT was a monster who was one of the pioneers of pass rushing LBers. Myles Jack is a "joker" style LB, who relies on athleticism for elite coverage skills and is an above average run seeker that can stop a player close to the line of scrimmage, which are very beneficial skills in today's pass happy NFL, but I don't believe he will define a defense...especially not along the lines of what LT did for the Giants.

Jack would be an ILB in the 3-4 scheme and would not be asked to blitz very often, although, I do think he has the skills to do so when asked...

  16. TopDawg Legend

If the Rams target is Wentz, a trade down would be ideal for Cleveland....I would imagine we will find out who the Rams are targeting at some point before the draft. With a move that aggressive, they obviously have a specific target....Hopefully they don't keep everyone speculating until the final hour....They may even begin contract talks soon.

    What am I missing here?

The Rams can only pick one player with the #1 overall pick, right? If they select Wentz, then Goff is still sitting there at #2. If they pick Goff, then Wentz is there.

From I can tell from various sources and folks here on L4SN, there isn't a significant difference between the two and the Browns still need a QB, right?

@#2 The Browns should still be able to pick the other of the two. What remains to be seen is if Hue and Sashi are looking to take a QB with that pick.

  19. I watched the tape but didn't study it...if Conklin fell that far that wuld b unreal but whoever drafts him I feel their getting the 2nd best OT in the draft and he right behind Tunsil by a slight margin

  20. The Browns may have Wentz highest on their board or vice versa w Goff so it's not automatic they select whichever QB is left
