By Fred Greetham OBR Senior Browns Reporter Posted Jul 6, 2013 The Browns officially kick off their first training camp under Rob Chudzinski and staff on Thursday, July 25. We will break down each position in the weeks leading up to the start of camp with the players currently on the roster. The second position we take a look at is the running back position. 1 Comment Running Backs ? Trent Richardson, Montario Hardesty, Dion Lewis, Brandon Jackson, Chris Ogbonnaya, Miguel Maysonet and Owen Marecic Richardson (5-9, 230, 22, 2nd year)?Richardson is being counted upon to be the workhorse back for the Browns. Richardson said during minicamp that Norv Turner told him he expected him to be the ?bell cow? for the offense. Turner has had three players combine for five NFL rushing titles under him Emmitt Smith, LaDainian Tomlinson and Ricky Williams. Richardson said that Smith told him that Turner?s offense was a perfect fit for him and he is excited to get going. Richardson led the Browns as a rookie with 950 yards and 11 touchdowns, despite missing all of the preseason after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Richardson played in the first 15 games before missing the season finale with an ankle injury. He went over the 100-yard mark three times with his biggest game coming against Turner?s Chargers as he totaled 122 yards on 24 carries, including a 26-yard touchdown run. Richardson also had 51 receptions for 367 yards and a touchdown. He is expected to play a big part in the receiving game in Turner?s offense, as well. One of the biggest concerns during the OTAs and the June minicamp was Richardson?s health as he sat out with what was described as a lower leg strain. He insisted he could play if it was during the season and Chudzinski said that he expects Richardson to be ready for the start of camp. Hardesty (6-0, 225, 26, 4th year)?Hardesty was healthy for the first time in his career and showed flashes of explosiveness on different occasions. He rushed for 271 yards on 65 carries (4.2 avg.) with a touchdown. He caught two passes for 16 yards. Hardesty?s best game was when he picked up 52 yards on 10 carries against the Chiefs, including a 25-yard run. Ogbonnaya (6-0, 225, 27, 4th year)?Ogbonnaya played in 15 games, including one start. He was used as a third down back and finished the season with 24 receptions for 187 yards. His best game was against the Bengals in the second week when he caught six passes for 73 yards. The Browns might choose to use Ogbonnaya, at times, as the blocking back opposite of Richardson. Jackson (5-10, 215, 27, 7th year) ? Jackson was used little in 2012 after missing the 2011 season with a turf toe injury. In Richardson?s absence in the season finale against the Steelers, Jackson carried the ball eight times for 54 yards, including a 25-yard run. Jackson was an unrestricted free agent and the Browns chose to bring him back prior to the OTAs, most likely as insurance behind Richardson and Hardesty. Lewis (5-8, 195, 22, 3rd year) ? Lewis was acquired in a trade from the Eagles for linebacker Emmanuel Acho. In his first two seasons with the Eagles, Lewis carried the ball 36 times for 171 yards with two touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 21 yards. Lewis is looked to be a change of pace back and he can also return kickoffs. Lewis was with the Eagles when CEO Joe Banner was part of the process of drafting him out of Pitt and is high on the third year player. Maysonet (5-10, 210, 23, 1st year) ? Maysonet was signed as an undrafted free agent rookie from Stony Brook where he set numerous records. He will be a long-shot to make the roster, but could land on the practice squad. Marecic (6-0, 245, 24, 3rd year)?Marecic is the only player listed as a fullback on the roster heading into training camp. After starting as a rookie, Marecic lost his starting job to Alex Smith, who was previously a tight end last season. Marecic started just two games in 2012 and had no rushes and caught no passes. However, he dropped several passes. There?s a good chance he will have to have a great training camp to make the roster. Summary: The Browns appear to be deep in the running back department, but thin in the fullback department. It is unclear if the Browns will employ a conventional fullback or what they will do at the position. There is some thought the Browns will employ two running backs or use a tight end in the backfield like an H-back. The Browns plan on using Richardson heavily and have taken extreme precaution to allow him to be healthy heading into the season. Richardson had a knee injury, two broken ribs and an ankle injury in 2012, but missed just one game. If healthy, Richardson should thrive in the system used by Turner. Hardesty will likely be the backup to Richardson with Ogbonnaya or Lewis the change of pace or third down back. (Next up: We?ll take a look at the Wide Receiver position in our third position preview)
The Browns are expected to start Travis Benjamin at X receiver during Josh Gordon's two-game suspension. Greg Little is the Z receiver, and Davone Bess plays in the slot. Benjamin has sub-4.4 jets and big-play ability, averaging 16.6 yards on 18 receptions as a rookie. He's still unlikely to be a fantasy-viable early-season producer. We wouldn't be surprised if TE Jordan Cameron emerged as Cleveland's leading pass catcher in the first two games, building momentum for a breakout year.
I really hope Cameron breaks out this year and the next in line of top flight tight ends in these offensive minds careers, but he is going to need some help...Can Greg Little be that guy without Gordon? All I can say is I hope the rumor bluez put up earlier isn't true as I haven't heard anything since then.(although I didn't hear anything for two weeks about the first one after bluez told us about it either) Benjamin I think will be one of those guys who busts 1-2 60+ yard TD runs per year, but I'm not convinced he will become a consistent 5 catch per game receiver. I really think Bess will be the wild card this year. He has the experience this team has needed and has been a pretty consistent #2-3 WR...Unfortunately I think he and Little are in the same mold and without Gordon, this receiving corp could become stagnant. What my hope is that Weeden matures enough to really use every man on this squad. Upping Little's average of 675 yards and 3 TDs to around 900 yards and 5 TDs, not world beater, but should definitely be reachable. Then Bess keeps his average of 700 yards per year and 3-4 TDs. Add in Cameron, with what Turner/Chud TEs have been in the past of between 750-1000 yards and around 7-10 TDs. IF all of that happens and the rumor about Gordon is not accurate, then I think Gordon would have an opportunity to break the 1,000 yard mark and catch around 10 TDs in this offensive scheme. These situations would propel this pass offense into the top ten and give them the momentum coming off of their primary running offense to make them one of the top in the league. Obviously this is a lot of speculation and built on hope. But my homerism can't help but believe the talent level is there to excel with the coaching upgrades added this off season. I can't wait for the rookies to report July 19th...Unfortunately, this is has been my favorite time of year when hope is at it's peak...but something feels different this year. I only hope the Haslem BS won't interfere with the team.
The Browns have thus far been "extremely pleased" with Jabaal Sheard's conversion from defensive end to outside linebacker. "If the season opened tomorrow," Sheard and Paul Kruger would be Cleveland's starting outside 'backers with Barkevious Mingo and Quentin Groves coming off the bench. We still wouldn't rule out a pre-Week 1 trade involving Sheard if Mingo proves capable of playing all three downs in training camp. For now, though, the Browns look awfully deep at a crucial position in their new 3-4 defense.
to my understanding it wasnt a league test but a team test which the Browns administered WITHOUT contacting the NFLPA first which is a violation so we think he is afe and will miss the first two games only . still quit playing with fire Gordon .we need you . this may not be over with yet . i to have high hopes and hope all this legal BS doesnt upset the team this year .

A month ago, Browns running back Trent Richardson was denying a report that a leg injury would keep him out of the start of training camp. From all indications, Richardson is still on pace to achieve his optimistic goal of being ready to go when the Browns report. Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Richardson began his running program as scheduled back home in Pensacola, Florida, and he?s still on track to be there when the Browns? veterans report for camp on July 24. Still, the Browns may decide to err on the side of caution with Richardson, who has great talent but also has had problems with nagging injuries, both in college and in his rookie year with the Browns last season. Even if Richardson is on track to be ready on the first day of camp, that doesn?t mean the Browns will give him a full workload immediately. As a rookie, Richardson carried 267 times for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns and added 51 catches for 367 yards. The Browns may decide to give second-string running back Montario Hardesty and third-string running back Dion Lewis the ball more often this year, in the hopes that Richardson can stay healthy all season.
Two hours into my first day of work as a Wal-Mart greeter, an ugly woman came in with her two kids. Hearing her swear at them, I said, 'Good morning, welcome to... Wal-Mart. Nice kids, are they twins?' The mom answered, 'Hell no, they ain't twins. The oldest one's 9, and the other one's 7. Why would you think they're twins? Are you blind or stupid?' I replied, 'I'm not blind or stupid. I just couldn't believe someone slept with you twice. Have a good day, and thank you for shopping at Wal-Mart.' My supervisor said I probably wasn't cut out for this line of work!
As he wades through the legal process of defending his Pilot Flying J corporation through a federal investigation and at least 18 civil lawsuits, Jimmy Haslam said in an exclusive interview with ESPN Cleveland that he has no intention of selling the Browns. Asked if he could envision any scenario in which that would change, Haslam said, ?Absolutely not. We plan on owning the Browns for a long time.? Rumors of a possible sale intensified recently after a Wall Street Journal article reported Pilot Flying J, the truck stop and diesel fuel company founded by Haslam?s father and now run by Haslam, had nearly doubled its debt to $4 billion. Haslam would not comment on the story. In a telephone conversation, he seemed particularly irritated about the rumors of a possible sale of the Browns. ?Since October, we put together a completely new front office, hired a new head head coach with two really good coordinators, sold naming rights to the stadium, and went through free agency and the draft,? Haslam said. Most of that football business occurred before Haslam?s Pilot Flying J headquarters was raided by FBI and IRS agents on April 15. An affidavit used to secure search warrants spelled out a scheme in which Pilot sales executives withheld fuel rebates to defraud trucking companies. Five Pilot employees have been charged with crimes and three have accepted plea deals in which they agreed to help in the federal investigation. Haslam has denied any knowledge of the scheme and has pledged to repay with interest any company that was shorted. Still, 18 trucking companies have filed suit against Pilot Flying J. Haslam declined to talk about any part of the investigation. To emphasize that he has no plans to sell the Browns, he cited the investment he has committed to the franchise since the April 15 FBI raid. ?We?ve spent $5 million remodeling (team headquarters in) Berea. And we?re working on an upwards of $100 million remodeling of the stadium. We?ve been very committed to turning this franchise around.? Haslam said the $100 million-plus in improvements will come in two phases ? one after the 2013 season and one after the 2014 season. These do not include ?fan experience? improvements, such as new WiFi service, that will be in effect for the 2013 season, he said. ?Things that we can do fairly quickly will come this year,? he said. ?The big things, i.e. a new scoredboard, will come after the ?14 season.? Haslam said team executives have had ?five or six? meetings about the long-range stadium improvement plan. He said that the plans, pending approval by the city of Cleveland, would be detailed in an announcement in the near future. At the same time, Haslam ?has been working hand-in-glove? with the NFL as the investigation of his company ensues, according to a separate league source. ?He is taking direction and he is taking advice (from the NFL),? said the source. ?They even have a plan in place in the event there is an indictment (of Haslam) to maintain ownership of the Browns during the legal process.? Asked about the existence of such a contingency plan, Haslam said, ?I don?t want to answer any legal questions.? Haslam said he intended to be in attendance for the first team training camp practice open to fans on July 25. ?I won?t be there for every practice but we?ll be there frequently,? he said. ?And I am genuinely excited.? ?We look forward to owning the team for a long time to come. I can?t emphasize how committed we are to bringing a winner to Cleveland,? Haslam said. Tony Grossi covers the Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR, ESPN 1540 KNR2 and www.espncleveland.com.
A pair of former UNLV defensive lineman and two productive wide receivers headline a group of six players eligible for the NFL's 2013 supplemental draft, Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com and CBSSports.com reports. Players available in the supplemental draft are those who were eligible, but did not declare for the entry draft and have lost their eligibility for the upcoming college season. This year's supplemental draft will take place via e-mail and will begin at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 11. According to Rang, NFL teams were informed over the weekend that Houston wide receiver DeWayne Peace, Purdue wide receiver O.J. Ross, Central Florida defensive end Toby Jackson, UNLV defensive end James Boyd and defensive tackle Nate Holloway and South Alabama defensive back Damond Smith are the players who will comprise this year's supplemental draft class. Despite missing three games, Peace, listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, led the Cougars with 54 receptions for 603 yards in 2012, but was ruled academically ineligible and was removed from the team in June. Ross, listed a 5-foot-10 and 188 pounds, led the Boilermakers with 56 receptions in 2012 and finished his college career with 100 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns before he was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Ross was previously suspended for a bowl game due to academics. On the defensive side, Smith might be an intriguing prospect. The 5-foot-11, 181-pound cornerback began his career at Western Michigan before transferring to South Alabama, where he got into a fight with a teammate and was suspended for violating team rules. Smith was invited to tryout for the Green Bay Packers following the 2013 entry draft, but the NFL ruled that he was eligible for the supplemental draft. Boyd began his college career as an "athlete" at USC, playing quarterback, tight end and defensive end before moving on to a junior college and then to UNLV last season. In eight games at UNLV, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Boyd had 21 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, with two sacks (one full sack against Washington State, two split sacks against Northern Arizona) and had seven passes defensed. Teams looking for a pass rush project might be intrigued by Boyd's athleticism. Holloway is a 365-pound run-stuffer who had 28 tackles in 25 games over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Holloway had academic issues during his UNLV career and left the program in June. Jackson is a 6-foot-5, 257-pound defensive end who had 14 tackles in nine games during the 2011 season, but was academically ineligible in 2012. There have been 42 players selected in supplemental drafts, including 11 players in the last 10 years. Since 2002, there have only been one supplemental draft (2004) where no player was selected (the event was not held in 2008 as there were no eligible players). Active supplemental draft choices include San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks, free agent left tackle Jared Gaither, Chicago Bears running back Harvey Unga, Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon and Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent, who is awaiting trial on an intoxicated manslaughter charge. ..

Even in death, Scott E. Entsminger had a sense of humor about his favorite team, the Cleveland Browns. Entsminger's obit in the Columbus Post-Dispatch describes him as a musician, family man and an avid Cleveland Browns fan. Entsminger's obit said that he requested that six Browns players serve as pall bearers "so the Browns can let him down one last time." In his 55 years, Entsminger no doubt saw his share of disappointment with the Browns, from Brian Sipe's end zone interception to Earnest Byner's fumble, The Drive and eventually the team moving to Baltimore and then returning as an expansion team with very little success since its reincarnation. At leat Entsminger appeared to keep it in perspective until the very end.

The Browns radio homes around the region are set, and the over-the-air domicile isn?t in dispute. Something, however, remains unsettled. Where do the Browns play on cable? As of now, it?s not SportsTime Ohio where they did so for years. According to a source, the team is still looking for a cable TV home and suitors include SportsTime Ohio and Time Warner Cable. But what?s the value of being their cable rights home? Being realistic, there?s always some value in being associated with the NFL, the most popular and powerful league in the country, and the Browns much to the dismay of those who pull hair out wondering why the football fans in Northeast Ohio still continue to give them a pass when it comes to vocal criticism. But depending on what the Browns are asking for those cable rights, the parties have to ask themselves if it?s worth it. During STO?s prior run, they came with rebroadcast rights of preseason games and the right to do long-form shows from Berea during training camp as well as in-season programming. That?s it. In STO, the Browns have a familiar partner, but things are different with Fox Sports now running STO. As for Time Warner, they, without a doubt, can make a strong run at such rights given who they are. They own their own regional sports network in the form of Time Warner Cable Sports Channel and was even a contender in the STO sweepstakes last year. Being ?cable TV home? of the Browns would be a mini coup, but although the video provider enjoys a dominant presence in the region, other services such as AT&T, DirecTV, Dish and plenty of smaller companies wouldn?t have access to the channel. Do the Browns want something like that? The Browns aren?t ready to comment and neither are the regional cable networks. But it will be interesting to see how things shake out. Adult behavior on Twitter? There?s a reason that many journalists consider Twitter a necessary evil. It gives the dinosaurs in print a way to break news then follow up. But Twitter is also a place where silliness explodes depending on the news of the moment. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone thinks they have the right to foist it upon you. For the wise ones, better to ignore the ignorant and keep going. Even grown men aren?t immune to indulging in it. Witness the imbroglio that?s arisen courtesy of Dwight Howard?s departure from the Los Angeles Lakers. For those who missed it this past weekend Howard announced that he was going to sign with the Houston Rockets rather than return to the Lakers. According to a vast array of reports, that prompted Kobe Bryant to unfollow Howard on Twitter then hit his Instagram account and post a picture of himself with arm around teammate Pau Gasol with the message: #vamos (let?s go) #juntos (A small, usually secret group united for a common interest) #lakercorazon (Laker heart) #vino (wine). Allegedly this wasn?t enough for Lakers player Jodie Meeks who sent an obviously Photoshopped picture of Howard as a WNBA player on Instagram before his account allegedly disappeared. In the Twitterverse and the Internet in general, it?s difficult to discern who is doing what and why. But it?s hard to believe these guys are adults. When used as a place to disseminate information, Twitter can be invaluable and just as interesting. One only has to witness last year?s presidential debates to grasp that. But it can just as easily turn into a verbal dumping ground for immature people throwing temper tantrums because they don?t get their way. The type is familiar to everyone. They want their Oompa Loompa and they want it now. Were I Bryant and Meeks (who is that guy anyway?), I would worry less about Howard, whose better days just may be behind him, leaving than one fundamental question: since when do the Lakers beg anyone to play for them? Golf Channel rising The Golf Channel continued its winning ways with a record-setting second quarter with ratings rising 8 percent over last year, according to a release. Here's something funny I heard on the news last night. Make sure you read the Last Request they put in this guy's obituary. I take my hat off to a lifelong fan. RIP. MANSFIELD ? A few light-hearted lines in a Mansfield man?s obituary have not only put Scott Entsminger in the national spotlight, but also grabbed the attention of his favorite football team. Tuesday, representatives from the Cleveland Browns will attend the funeral of the General Motors retiree with a special gift for his widow, Patty Colombo-Entsminger. ?We reached out to Scott?s wife as soon as we heard about this, and Pat told us his favorite player is Lou Groza, and so we were thinking about what we could do given the situation with all of our players gone and our coaches on vacation,? said Zak Gilbert, public relations manager for the Browns. ?But we wanted to do something because we want to show his family and all the Browns fans that we really do care about them, and don?t take their support for granted. We took the number 76 jersey and put Scott?s last name on it.? On July 5, Scott?s brother Bill Entsminger wrote his brother?s obituary. ?I was pretty much in a daze, so he was the one who wrote it,? Patty said. ?But it was totally something Scott would have said. He and Bill went to every game together.? At the top of the obit, Bill wrote: ?A lifelong Cleveland Browns fan and season ticket holder, he also wrote a song each year and sent it to the Cleveland Browns as well as offering other advice on how to run the team. He respectfully requests six Cleveland Browns pall bearers so the Browns can let him down one last time.? Patty said the request was clearly a joke, as her husband was cremated. She said Scott, 55, had pancreatic cancer and died July 4, just 22 days after being diagnosed. ?But we have certainly got a kick out of what?s happened since,? she said, indicating the numerous media calls she?s received. Patty said Scott and Bill had season tickets and hadn?t missed a home game since the Browns returned to Cleveland in 1999. ?He grew up a huge Browns fan. He would get frustrated with the team like everyone else at times, but he never gave up hope,? Patty said. ?He was a diehard. But he wasn?t one of those drunken fans. He was always very respectful of everyone around him when he was at games.? In two containers by the front door, Patty fondly showed some of Scott?s Browns memorabilia and apparel, including a Browns gnome on the mantle; a Browns Christmas tree; a stuffed Browns frog; a Browns beanie cap from his sister; a Groza jersey; and his prized possession, a Browns winter jacket. ?His Browns stuff is everywhere in this house,? Patty said with a laugh. ?We?re always bumping into things. I can?t even get to it all.? At Tuesday?s service, which will be at 2 p.m. at the Life Celebration Reception Center, 129 South Main Street, Patty said three shrines will be set up for Scott. ?One will be for our wedding; his hobbies ? our three dogs, gardening and fishing; and then for his love of the Browns,? she said. ?He always dressed up the dogs for the games. Whenever he watched at home and the Browns scored, he?d yell, ?Touchdown Cleveland Browns!? and the dogs would come running in because they knew they?d get a treat.? Patty is bringing the three large Browns handkerchiefs the dogs wore on game days to the life celebration. ?That?s the La-Z-Boy he sat in to watch,? she said pointing to a large, overstuffed blue chair. ?I?d watch with him sometimes when they were on, but I?m not a big fan. I just always supported him. It never bothered me though. I knew all this about him before I married him.? The couple has been together for 16 years. At first Patty said she wanted to steer clear of media calls. In one day, the story reached NBC News, CBS Sports, the Huffington Post and ESPN. ?ESPN called Scott?s son (Aaron Entsminger) and he gave them my number,? she said. ?They said they?re coming out to the funeral home to film as part of this documentary they?re doing on the Browns. I didn?t want any of this attention, but his son is really getting a kick out of it, so I like that it?s helping to lift his spirits.? The Browns also called Monday afternoon. ?I think it?s really sweet,? Patty said. ?This is a real celebration of his life ? and the Browns were a huge part of it.?
Browns fan Scott Entsminger one-upped the ?Factory of Sadness? guy with a posthumous rip on their favorite team. But the man who asked in his obituary for six Browns players to serve as pallbearers so that the team ?could let him down one more time? will receive a final gift from the franchise. Browns spokesman Zak Gilbert tells PFT that the team contacted Scott Entsminger?s wife as soon as they learned he?d passed. She explained that Scott?s favorite player was Lou Groza. At Tuesday?s memorial service for Scott Entsminger, a Browns representative will deliver to Entsminger?s wife a personalized jersey bearing Groza?s number, 76. It?s a great gesture by an organization that, under new ownership, is trying to turn things around. Their fans deserve it. Through years of futility and frustration, Browns fans remain stubbornly loyal. Now, they?re coached by a Browns fan who watched games as a youth from outside his house to simulate being in the elements, and who has admitted to consuming a Milk Bone or two. So better things could be coming for the Browns. Hopefully, Entsminger will be able to enjoy it from that great Dawg Pound in the sky.
