In an arbitrary segment rife with arbitrary individuals, former Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin referred to Cleveland Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas as a ?fat guy? who doesn?t impact a game in the way others on a list (provided by NFL Network) do. Turn up your volume a bit and take a listen for yourself. The whole segment seems to be of the ?embrace debate? culture where analysts say things that they may or may not actually believe, but do so in an elevated volume as to exude passion and conviction. In Thomas? six years in the league, the 28-year old has amassed six Pro Bowl appearances to go with being a three-time First Team All-Pro and a two-time Second Team All-Pro

You?ve got questions and comments that you submit to the Browns? official Facebook and Twitter pages, and Daily@ClevelandBrowns.com. Here?s what I have to say about what you have to say:

Jim says: ?Ray Horton, you tore the defense down, and now you have to produce. Prove to me your defense can stop the run and prevent long plays. What are you going to do with all those defensive linemen? All of them have talent and proved they can play in this league, with the exception of the rooks.?

I say: I don?t buy the premise that, as the Browns? new defensive coordinator, Horton ?tore down? something that was great, Jim.

The Browns? defense finished 23rd in the NFL last season. It did not consistently generate a strong pass rush. It did not consistently prevent big plays, ranking 25th against the pass. And it certainly didn?t do a great job of stopping the run, ranking 19th in that category.

What part of the defense could anyone say deserved to be left well enough alone? None of it.

The Browns? brass was hardly going out on a limb with the decision to proceed with a major defensive makeover. And I think you?re going to like the results.

The incumbent defensive linemen are good. I don?t know how many could be regarded as great, or potentially great. But there does appear to be enough talent in the group, which was upgraded with the free-agent addition of Desmond Bryant, for Horton to utilize in his multiple-front, 3-4 scheme.

Horton?s creativity should go a long way toward putting the likes of Ahtyba Rubin, Phil Taylor, and Billy Winn in good position to make plays. More importantly, they will be looked upon to help allow the linebackers ? the featured part of the new scheme ? to be playmakers.

Whether it is Paul Kruger, Jabaal Sheard, Barkevious Mingo, and Quinton Groves rushing the passer from the outside, or D?Qwell Jackson and Craig Robertson stuffing the run inside, you will know whether Horton?s defense is all that it is cracked up to be if those linebackers are regularly making a positive impact.

There is no argument IMO, Joe Thomas is the best left tackle in football today.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? A third employee of the truck stop chain owned by Tennessee's governor and the owner of the Cleveland Browns pleaded guilty Tuesday in what authorities call a scheme to cheat trucking firms out of rebates.

Regional sales manager Kevin Clark pleaded guilty to mail fraud in federal court in Knoxville. Court records state he "knowingly and voluntarily joined and participated in the conspiracy" with others at Pilot Flying J, the country's largest diesel retailer, to short-change trucking companies between 2009 and this spring.

As part of the plea agreement, Clark acknowledged participating in a scheme to defraud customers of the cash rebates they had negotiated in order to increase Pilot profits and boost sales commissions.

Federal agents raided the privately held company's Knoxville headquarters in April. Pilot is run by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, the brother of Gov. Bill Haslam. Jimmy Haslam has denied any personal wrongdoing.

The governor maintains he is not involved with operating Pilot Flying J, though he continues to hold an undisclosed ownership stake in the company posting annual revenues of $31 billion.

Clark has agreed to cooperate with the investigation and testify on behalf of the prosecution.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said they will only hold Clark responsible for rebate reductions he personally approved, rather than all of the alleged fraud committed as part of the conspiracy.

Clark's attorney did not immediately return messages seeking comment. A Pilot spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

Secret recordings made as part of the investigation show that members of the Pilot sales team derided some clients as unsophisticated, lazy and undeserving of rebates they had negotiated when signing a deal to buy fuel from Pilot. An FBI affidavit indicates millions of dollars were unfairly withheld.

According to the transcript of a Nov. 28 conversation, Clark recounted how managers of Omaha, Neb.-based Morehouse Trucking had failed to keep track of how much money was due in rebates.

"The dumb (expletive) never checked, I guess," Clark said. "I felt like sayin', 'Well you're the moron that didn't check it!'"

Jimmy Haslam in one of his first public appearances following the April raid told reporters that he had called Clark to obtain a phone number for Morehouse and made arrangements to reimburse any rebates the company had failed to pay.

Manager Curt Morehouse said in a phone interview Tuesday that he had always had a good impression of Clark before the details of the rebate allegations began to surface.

"Everything about him was positive, until I read the affidavits," Morehouse said. "At that point my opinion of him changed."

After coming back from a torn Achilles in college, Browns sixth-rounder Jamoris Slaughter isn?t just content to make the roster.

He?s thinking about a starting job.

Slaughter didn?t participate in OTAs or minicamp, but said he?ll be ready when training camp begins.

?I?m cleared at this point to do everything, so I?ve been feeling really good,? Slaughter said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. ?I?ve been working out hard with the team, just waiting to get back for training camp.?

Slaughter suffered the injury early last season for Notre Dame, and most of his work was on a stationary bike during spring workouts.

But he thinks he can compete with Tashaun Gipson for the starting free safety job.

?Definitely,? he said. ?It?s one thing I think about every day is getting that starting position. I know it?s a process. It doesn?t happen overnight. As long I keep taking the right steps and staying positive, I think it will happen. . . .

?I?m steaming to get out there on the field, just having to watch OTAs, and minicamp,? he said. ?I?ve been getting a lot of mental reps. On that side, it?s helped me out a lot, mentally just learning the playbook and watching the guys and seeing the things they do good and bad and learn from that. I know when I step on the field and get the rust off I?ll be right back.?

Gipson started three games last year, but Slaughter?s biggest obstacle might be his own condition. Confidence is one thing, but having realistic expectations when coming back from such an injury is key.

CLEVELAND: Although Leon McFadden has resisted calling his shot when it comes to the Browns? cornerback competition, fellow rookie Barkevious Mingo clearly believes McFadden should be oozing with swagger.

McFadden, a third-round pick in this year?s draft, has been competing this offseason against Chris Owens and Buster Skrine for the starting cornerback job opposite Joe Haden. Throughout organized team activities and the team?s mandatory minicamp, Owens and Skrine split time with the first-team defense while McFadden worked with the second unit.

But the competition will heat up once training camp opens July 25, and Mingo realizes McFadden shouldn?t be counted out.

?He?s a hard-working guy,? Mingo said Tuesday as the Browns? rookies participated in a youth football camp at FirstEnergy Stadium. ?He?s a guy that hopefully we?re going to be depending on when the time comes.?

Mingo, the sixth overall pick in this year?s draft who?ll play outside linebacker for the Browns, attended Louisiana State University, where he had some elite cornerbacks as teammates. Mingo insists McFadden, who went to San Diego State, stacks up well against two notable LSU products ? Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft, and Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne, the sixth overall selection in last year?s draft.

?I think he?s looked just as good or better than some of those players,? Mingo said of McFadden. ?Obviously Pat was a tremendous talent. Mo?s a tremendous talent. But I think Leon could have came in and played at LSU with all the DBs we had. He could have been one of those players.?

The 5-foot-9, 195-pound McFadden, though, has played the humble card and avoided anointing himself a starter with Owens and Skrine ahead of him on the depth chart.

?Those guys are technically vets in the game, and they?re both good players,? McFadden said. ?They?re competing for that No. 1 spot just as well. At the end of the day, when the season starts, we?ll find out [who will start].?

No matter how the starting lineup shakes out, McFadden is confident fans fearing the secondary is an area of weakness will be pleasantly surprised once the season starts.

?The way I see it, we?re competing in practice, and we?ll be a strong and positive secondary,? he said.

In the meantime, he?s working to do his part.

?I?ve grown as far as studying off the field,? McFadden said. ?I feel like the time I?m doing that off the field has extended since college. So that?s the biggest adjustment, and the speed of the game. Everybody?s the best of the best here, so you have to stay on your ?A? game every day.?

Mingo has no doubt McFadden will deliver, even if the latter is hesitant to make any promises.

    Weight update

Mingo has recently established an offseason routine by pounding cheeseburgers at Five Guys.

?I?ve been there three days in a row,? Mingo said with a laugh.

Mingo, though, has always been able to eat whatever he wants without his waistline suffering consequences. So Mingo plans to report to training camp in late July at his current weight of 237 pounds despite his fast-food binge.

?A lot of people think you have to be a certain weight to play a certain position,? said Mingo, the sixth overall pick in this year?s draft. ?I don?t think that?s true.?

The 6-foot-4 Mingo indicated the coaching staff has not encouraged him to bulk up.

?They really don?t care,? he said.

    Bold prediction

Mingo believes the Browns? defense has the potential to become the top unit in the NFL.

?I think if everything is going well, I think this defense could be the best in the league,? Mingo said. ?We have a lot of players that can contribute and help this team win. We?ve got a lot of rushers. We?ve got corners on the back end. We?ve got D-linemen that can hold those blocks and get off and make plays. We?ve got linebackers that can come up and tackle the run and get back in coverage as well. So we have a lot of tools that we can use.?

Mingo said the players have embraced defensive coordinator Ray Horton?s attack-oriented mindset.

?I think he has a very strange personality,? Mingo said. ?But we like it. We love it. He?s an aggressive guy ? we like that ? and it shows in his play calling. He loves to blitz. He loves to get after people, and we like that. I definitely love to play for a guy that?s going forward instead of waiting for them to come at you.?

    Agenda for rookies

After the Browns? mandatory minicamp ended June 6, the veterans went on vacation and the rookies stayed with the organization to participate in the offseason conditioning program and attend meetings at its headquarters in Berea.

On Thursday, the undrafted rookies will be permitted to go home. The five members of the Browns? 2013 draft class, though, will stick around because they?ll attend the NFL Rookie Symposium next week in Northeast Ohio.

The symposium will run June 23-29 with the Bertram Inn and Conference Center in Aurora serving as its base. Stops at the Browns? training facility and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton are also on the itinerary. Browns special adviser and legendary running back Jim Brown will conduct a history session for the rookies at the hall of fame.

The area will host the symposium for the second consecutive year.

    Extra points

Mingo said there were no updates about his rookie contract being finalized, but he reiterated he?s not worried about it. He believes he?ll sign in time for training camp. ? Browns wide receivers Davone Bess and Greg Little have traded jersey numbers. Bess will now wear No. 15, and Little will don No. 18, Browns media relations coordinator Dan Murphy wrote on Twitter. ? The Browns? rookies watched the Indians play the Kansas City Royals Tuesday night at Progressive Field.

How about we start by trying to be better than the three teams in our own division?

Or maybe shooting for Top 20?

Also, it doesn't matter how good the defense gets if the offense -- led by Captain Turnover -- continues to stall on drives, fails to convert short-yardage and in general gets off the field far too soon.
