Discussion in 'Cleveland Browns' started by bluez, Apr 3, 2013.

  1. Following my above statement this is what I want Farmer and the Browns to do in the off season. I'll admit that I didn't know much about the players selected by us from the 4th rd on but I would of walked out of there with Watkins,Carr and Bitonio in the 2 rds. So considering Farmer has scouts, film and personal to help him I would of drafted 3 starters in 2 rds. About what he, a professional, did.

    1. I try to trade Manziel.
    2. I try to trade Gordon.
    3. I sign Moore, Locker or Sanchez if I can't resign Hoyer.
    4. If I keep Schwartz then I sign a RG - Carpenter, Iupoti, Franklin or Rietz. Right side set!
    5. I sign a WR. Shorts, Cobb or Maclin.
    6. If you cant get Thomas or Clay then draft one.
    7. Sign either a DE or DT
    8. Draft a DE or DT if I don't sign one.
    9. Draft an OLB with my 1st pick. Ray, Thompson, Beasley.
    10. Draft a QB. Start looking in 3rd rd. Hundley,Petty, Grayson
    11. If I draft one later then look Carden, Mannion, Wallace.

    Sign
    QB
    WR
    RG
    DT
    DE
    Draft
    1. OLB/WR
    1. WR/OLB
    2. ILB/
    3. QB
    4. TE
Then position of need and depth.

The 2015 season could be Johnny Manziel's last with the Browns. (Getty Images)

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had seen enough. This is the same Kyle Shanahan who endured the Robert Griffin III circus in 2013 that eventually cost him and his father, then-coach Mike Shanahan, their jobs.

But drafting Johnny Manziel to the Browns in May 2014 ratcheted up the craziness and Shanahan decided it was in his best interests to go elsewhere ... anywhere. We wrote of the reported friction earlier in the month, but now ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler and Pat McManamon paint a bleaker picture of just how dysfunctional things had become in the seven months since Manziel joined the organization.

From Fowler and McManamon: "Those who spoke talked of a yearlong pattern that showed a lack of commitment and preparation, a failure to be ready when given a chance in his first start against Cincinnati and a continued commitment to nightlife, which affected his preparation and work while in the team facility."

As one player put it: Manziel's 2014 season could be summed up in three words: "100 percent joke."

In the weeks and months leading up to the draft, there were questions about Manziel's physical skills, but also about the off-field issues -- partying, mostly -- and that likely scared off a lot of quarterback-needy teams. But once Manziel started to slip on draft night, the Browns traded back into the first round and selected him 22nd overall, the same picks the team had years earlier used on quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Brandon Weeden.

"During the draft process, not one person interviewed by the team said he was going to grow up," one source directly involved in the drafting of Manziel told ESPN.com. "You can't blame Johnny. This is who he is. The team knew that."

It's the logic used when Redskins owner Dan Snyder was handing out those hysterically high-priced contracts to over-the-hill stars: Don't blame the guy cashing the checks, blame the guy writing them.

But pointing fingers at owner Jimmy Haslam, or the hobo who talked Haslam into taking Manziel, doesn't magically fix all this. The Browns are stuck with a quarterback that doesn't appear to have any interest in being good at his job.

Some veterans "clearly didn't want to play for [Manziel]" because of the lack of readiness, and they responded better to undrafted rookie Connor Shaw in part because he knew the plays, sources said. It wasn't lost on players that Shaw played through a dislocated finger on his left hand and a rib injury that had him passing blood after the season finale, while Manziel played six quarters before hurting his hamstring, then missed treatment on the injury on the final Saturday because he was still in bed.

It's telling that new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo said this Thursday: "We're not sure if our starting quarterback is in the building or not. If he is, great, if he isn't, great, too."

But the Browns won't give up on Manziel before he has one more chance to prove himself. Put another way, if he flops in 2015, he'll join Quinn and Weeden on the Browns' former first-round quarterback scrap heap, another depressing footnote for a team that can't seem to ever get out of its own way.

"What Johnny has to understand is [if] he has another year like he just had, he's not going to be famous anymore," one NFL team executive told ESPN.com. "LeBron James is going to lose his number."

I'm not a fan of Petty. Another product of his system. I believe he played pretty much out of the shotgun only at Baylor (I only got to see a few of Baylor's games). I just don't want yet another QB who has no idea how to play in the pocket and trust his OL to keep the DEF off of him and let the play develop.

  4. Mary Kay Cabot was asked in her column that came out today if she thought the Browns were going to go after Bradford? Since his name has been brought up here a few times I'm going to give her answer....

I DO THINK THE BROWNS MIGHT TRY TO TRADE FOR A QB, BUT I DOUBT THEY'D OPT FOR ONE WHO SUFFERED TORN ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENTS IN EACH OF HIS PAST SEASONS. I THINK THE BROWNS WILL BE ACTIVE IN THE FREE AGENT MARKET AS WELL. DEFILIPPO HAS COACHED 3 QB'S SET TO BECOME FREE AGENTS, MATT SCHAUB, MATT FLYNN AND MARK SANCHEZ. HOUSTON'S RYAN MALLETT ALSO IS POISED TO HIT THE MARKET.

So more than likely 1 of these 4 men will be our QB in 2015. She said in another column that Hoyer may not resign here. So out of these 4 men which 1 would you want? Because of size, arm strength and age if it was me it would be Mallett. He is a pocket passer. It has been stated a lot that the next QB of this team may not already be in the building.

    Oh Josh Gordon.... *WALL*

  6. Well at least this time it was booze and not dope. Still Gordon is facing a 1 year ban for a failed test. I hope the Browns finally wave good bye to this dumbass!

  7. Now get rid of the other wasted roster space, Johnny Drunk, and really start building a winning culture here.

  8. Now CBS is reporting that the Browns are highly unlikely to resign TE Jordon Cameron. Some of us figured as much but now with the realistic possibility that the Browns now need on offense a

    1. QB
    2. RG or RT
    3. TE
    4. 2 WR's

That's 5 positions out of 11 that this team needs to find just on offense Irish I'm not rubbing it in man but the fans have nothing to do with this team being the "FACTORY OF SADNESS"! They can accomplish that all by themselves.

I know most of you don't want to hear this but this team needs to build on what they do have. This team now needs 5 players on offense and DT, DE, OLB and ILB and 4 players on defense. fellas thats 9 players out of 22 starters that this team needs.

So the Browns being in this hole should right now today decide what QB coming out next year is worth that top pick and go after it. If it's Jones or whoever, they need to find a franchise guy. Manziel is not it. Trade him! Get more picks to actually build a team.

And before we all get into the "he's an adult, this is BS" rant. I will remind you that he is a professional, that is subject to the CONTRACT THAT HE SIGNED. EFF his sensitive little feelings, EFF him. Period. He is Ryan Leaf's soul mate.

Damn! I was looking forward to the ad nauseum debates in here on whether the Browns should just cut him or trade him.

I don't believe you can cut or trade a suspended player (someone correct me if I wrong). So, my guess is he will end up on the Commissioner's Exempt list for 2015 and we'll have to save all those debates until next year.

Eh, I'm sure I'd eff it up too....... *HIGH* :-*

I'm actually really glad this happened now, and not closer to, or after the draft. I think everyone knew it was coming, so it's good that it happened while we still have time to replace him.

    Irish,

I appreciate your faith in the kid, but it was seriously misplaced.

He is tested for alcohol because he got the DUI. The guy knows the rules. Should does not matter one bit, bud. He made a conscious decision, knowing the possible outcome. He chose his path, he needs to walk it.

Due to his latest suspension, Josh Gordon's contract will be tolled through the 2016 season, and he will only be eligible for restricted free agency in 2017.

This assumes the Browns don't cut Gordon. If they hold onto his rights -- doing so wouldn't count against Cleveland's roster limit -- Gordon will be signed for 2016 and eligible for the Browns to "tender" in 2017. All of this also assumes Gordon commits no violations during his year away. His contract will continue to be "tolled" as long as he's suspended.

LOL, he'll be a benched Brown till he's Jim Brown's age!

  19. Duff_Beer_Doug Franchise Player Browns Indians C&D Club

Doesn't cost the Browns anything to hang on to him while he's suspended. May as well hang on to him and try trade him after he's eligible to come back. Nobody is going to trade him for a bag of deflated footballs at this time. I'm not saying he shouldn't be cut, but let's see and maybe get something (a 7th rounder at least, hopefully) when/if he comes back. Should Gordon shoot himself in the foot (and hopefully not like Plaxico Burress) and fail testing again and get a lifetime ban, the Browns lose nothing. I guess I'd rather they get a late round pick for him rather than cutting him, see him put his act together, and lead the Patriots (or whoever) to yet another Super Bowl.
