Yep, $6.5M to cut him in 2015 (prior to June 1st). Don't know why I added up the dead money for the three years. *SCRATCH* Brain fart. Still - $6.5M to cut him versus $1.8M to keep him makes it a no brainer. We're stuck with him. :|
I don't mind if he's on the roster. I just don't want him to be our best option at QB. It came out again that instead of him being in Cleveland nursing that hamstring he is skiing in Colorado. Bench this arse clown and keep him there. But I would look to trade him. New OC means new QB. I want a pocket passer. I'll tell you the truth fellas. I would rather have Hoyer in there than him. If those are my options next year. But if we are not going to sign a veteran QB then I want us to draft one in the later rds of the draft.
Peyton Manning looks like Chit today against Indy. Luck is tearing it up. I'm going to make this prediction. If Denver loses I say Manning retires! This game is the passing of the torch to the NFL. Manning to Luck. If Manning decides to retire that would free up a lot of money for the Broncos. They could resign a couple of those high price free agents like J. Thomas, D. Thomas and O. Franklin. Stay tuned you heard it here first. Maybe then we could trade Manziel there, lol! PLEASE BABY JESUS!
What makes you think John Elway would want Manziel? On another note, despite who is hired as OC, who's for hiring Bernie Kosar as QB coach? The man knows football and could teach something to any QB that ends up here, veteran, rookie or in between...
I don't think anyone wants him Irish. I just wish someone would take him off our hands. Since he was in Colorado skiing this weekend instead of doing what he was suppose to do. So hopefully if Manning retires the Broncos will need a QB and the drunk can just stay there. Like you Irish I liked Manziel in college. I was bat chit we drafted him. But since he has been here he hasn't done chit but F#$@ up! He's a bullchitter! He is a good PR guy, I'll give him that. If I was Denver I wouldn't want him either. As of right now he's a bum! THE BROWNS NEED A QB! ASAP! Congrats to D. Jackson! He is on a winner now the Colts. 1 step closer to the Super Bowl! The Colts knew they had to suck for Luck and that what they did and look! Do you guy's ever think the Browns will be that smart again? I'm seriously having my doubts. We can't even keep coaches longer that 2 years! NEXT YEAR IT'S.......... BUST FOR BOSA! my shirts are coming, fellas! Maybe it should be ALL'S WELL WITH CARDALE!!!!!! How's come we never draft Buckeyes? PUKESBURG does and they win there! Just wondering!
ESPN just reported that the Bills have hired Rex Ryan as their HC and are going to hire Roman to be their OC. Schwartz is staying as their DC. Again do you guy's ever think the Browns can hire these type of coaches? I don't know. Maybe 25 years ago. I don't think so now.
Lane and Fred on the latest in the offensive coordinate search At least they aren?t looking for a new head coach! Baby steps. For the first time since after the 2012 season the Browns are not conducting a search for a new head coach. However, they are looking for a new offensive coordinator for the fourth-straight off-season. In addition to a new coordinator, the Browns are also seeking a new quarterbacks coach after the departure of Kyle Shanahan and Dowell Loggains on Thursday. TheOBR was first to report Loggains? status on the Browns staff was in dire jeopardy leading up to the Browns season finale in Baltimore. Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com was the first to report the moves and he reported that Shanahan asked for and was granted his release, while Loggains was fired. They each were with the Browns for one season. The Browns next offensive coordinator will be their sixth in as many seasons. The last coordinator to last more than one season was Brian Daboll under Eric Mangini in the 2009?10 seasons. Pat Shurmur was his own coordinator in his first season as coach in 2011, then he added Brad Childress in 2012. Norv Turner was coordinator under Rob Chudzinski in 2013, while Shanahan did so in 2014. Mike Pettine had not worked with Shanahan before this season, and now must replace him. Several names have already been linked to the Browns job including Matt Cavanaugh, John DeFilippo, Marc Trestman, Charlie Weis and Greg Roman. Roman, the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers has been provided the opportunity to interview with teams and is considered the front-runner to join Rex Ryan in Buffalo, pending Ryan?s agreement to become head coach of the Bills. TheOBR has learned Roman has been approached by the Browns and could interview next week for the team?s vacant offensive coordinator position. Cavanaugh, who hails from the Youngstown area, was most recently let go as the Bears quarterback coach when Trestman was fired after the season. His history with Pettine goes back to 1993 at the University of Pittsburgh. Pettine and Cavanaugh worked together for seven seasons in the NFL with the Ravens (2002?04) and the Jets (2009?12). Cavanaugh assisted in getting Pettine hired with the Ravens as a video assistant in 2002. Cavanaugh was the Ravens offensive coordinator in 2000 when they won the Super Bowl. Cleveland.com first reported the Browns might be interested in Cavanaugh. DeFilippo interviewed with Pettine last year and stayed in Oakland working with rookie quarterback Derek Carr as the Raiders quarterback coach last season. He was the assistant quarterbacks coach with Pettine and Cavanaugh on the staff with the Jets in 2009. Former Browns CEO Joe Banner hired Loggains and followed-up by signing Shanahan, despite Pettine being very impressed with DeFilippo and wanting to add the young and energetic offensive mind to the staff. TheOBR was first to identify DeFilippo as a candidate for a potential opening within the Browns staff late in the season following the continued turmoil within the Cleveland and Oakland organizations. Weis was the former Patriots coordinator and Notre Dame coach, before most recently being fired after coaching at Kansas. NFL.com first reported a connection to the Browns. Trestman was the Bears coach the past two seasons after coaching in the Canadian Football League prior to the Bears. He was the Browns offensive coordinator in 1989. ESPN.com first linked Trestman with the Browns. TheOBR has learned the Browns have gauged Trestman?s interest in the vacant Browns offensive coordinator position in recent days. An interview with Trestman could occur following his return from vacation as early as next week. It is expected the Browns will try and hire the replacements as six NFL teams are in the process of hiring head coaches and they will be trying to fill their coaching staffs. theOBR.com Recommended Stories
Well Ryan was hired Bluez by Buffalo and wants Roman as his OC. I saw it again last night. Watching the Broncos last night was sad to me. Watching a great QB in Manning looking like Brian Hoyer. ESPN last night mentioned that this may be the end of 1 of the greatest QB's in NFL history. The reason I brought this up is because they said this may be the end of the Bronco run. They mentioned all the good free agents they had and that Fox may be leaving Denver. Case their OC is a wanted OC and is in line to take the HC job there. I mentioned this because who is going to want to come here? I'm not being negative about this but why would they? Haslam told us when he got here that this is not business as usual. But it looks like it is. The Browns next year have a tough, brutal schedule. With no experienced QB on this roster it may get ugly. But by now we are use to that. We have been talking free agents on this board. I don't care what the Browns have to do but they have to get a good veteran QB or 1 that is better than what they have now. This team can't sit around and wait to see how long it will take Manziel to mature or if he will. I don't doubt that it was Haslam who drafted him. I feel that's going to be the reason he will get more chances than most to be successful here. I hope Haslam is right but right now he looks like an arse clown.
Deep Breath................. OK the Browns season is over, and the pain isn't as raw as it was a couple weeks ago, so looking ahead. Els, you've been all over the place, and frankly, I completely understand and agree with everthing you say at one point or another, but your comments contradict themselves often and really make a good example of reactionary thinking, which illustrates a lot of what the Browns organization has been doing for years. Not constructive when running a team, but a great outlet for fans to vent. Thank you for that. Dispassionately, this team actually has talent. If we had a QB ranked 15th, we'd be a hard team to beat. Why, well we have a good O line, once Mack returns (could get better with a little help on the right side), a solid running game with two young and inexpensive RBs, a recieving corps that for my money is amoung the top 10 (Gordon pissed me off this year, but he is still a top talent, Hawkins, and or Austin are good #2s, and Gabriel/Benjamin, good, not great 3rds). Defensively we have one of the best coverage groups out there, but need to upgrade the D line, and LBx, but injuries hit particularly hard in 2014, otherwise a pretty strong unit, that can turn over the opponent. My point is: we have a strong foundation, and we really only have "tinkering" to do to achieve playoff level football, with one glaring exception: QB. Hoyer remains our best option, but it seems unlikely he will stay, That's unfortunate because he is as good as almost any vet out there, and has the advantage of knowing our personnel, and remember we are going to have a new OC, and Brian can be credited with making a new system work this year, through his thorough absorbtion of the system which made his early contributions immeasurable. We are going to need that again this year, desperately. Front office? Well here we go again, can be heard throughout the league, relative to the Browns and the OC situation, but remember the OC "asked" to leave, he wasn't thrown out in frustration by mgt. Now that cuts both ways, becasue the FO seens to have played a role in making Shanny want out. I guess my point is the "change" wasn't triggered by Haslam and co. showing him the door, in other words they weren't planning to make a change (loss of continuity). So IMO, you are a team on the rise, with foundational players in place, and young players who show promise, coming off what was their best season in years, that was derailed by injuries (arguably), none of which are career ending. That's not the worst situation a prospective OC could end up in, so while I agree Cleveland isn't an attractive place to go, due to history, it isn't because of personnel, other than QB, which is not small "but". Player wise, we know who the problems are: Gordon - I'll be generous and say this was simply a lost year, and hope he regains his one of the league's biggest threats, and doesn't screw the pooch with some substance use. It's a big "if", but as of now we still own one of the legue's best WRs in Gordon. Gilbert "should be" a starter if he can pull his head out of his butt, and West needs to be more of a professional. I am going to say that I believe the coaches will be looking at what they did and how they did it, to see if they can find a better way to reach these guys, cause 3 guys competing for the doghuose honors is troubling, and something has to change, so that doesn't continue. The continuity we have longed for can only be achieved by letting this regime take their lumps, and grow. I hold out hope that they will do just that, and we will be stronger next year for their experience, if they have learned from it. I keep wondering what our record might have been if we hadn't lost our center (we have to get a better replacement guy regardless), but if we had been able to run, and protect the QB, I believe we win a couple more. Now that would be a seson of hope. Alas it was not to be.
OK, All anyone wants is a veteran QB, because quite frankly there isn't one in the draft... How desperate are we? I have a question and one I would like to pose on the Eagles board as well... Should we go for broke and offer the #19 pick from the Bills to the Eagles for Nick Foles? It would give the Eagles more ammo if they want to make an offer to the Buccaneers for the right to draft Mariota. One GIGANTIC problem I see with this is that he is in his last year of his rookie contract. That is why I think the deal could work to be honest. However, they would have to offer him an extension to make it work. Since he is in his 4th year of his rookie deal, he is eligible to sign a contract extension this off season. If we could get this guy for say, 4Years/$20M/$7M signing bonus, with $18M guaranteed and give up our #19 overall...should we do it? So in essence, you would make a 5 year commitment, He would receive his 4th year rookie deal, then an additional 4 years signed in advance. His agent could easily reject this offer based on hopeful future earnings being higher in free agency. However, this contract offers his client an average of $7M per year with bonus and the chance to start, where the average backup contract, which is very possible, only averages about $4.5M. We would HAVE to be sure that he could be a positive addition to the locker room, which I personally like... I am pulling my hair out here trying to figure out a way to improve the QB position...There are very few options
Irish if I rememeber right we were both hoping for Foles when he came out . I would indeed offer up the 19 pick for him and not bat a eye . if not then I say sign Sanchez . he is the best of what will out there to date .
I Renewed up insider info over on the OBR ..well worth the price of admission ..I have read several insider articles the last couple days .. NEWSFLASH ! We are not as dysfunctional as the media makes us out to be ..yes there was friction most of it with the coaching staff and Farmer not wanting anything to do with Manziel in the first place . he is spoiled little entitled brat who will not do what the coaches ask of him ..he will not change his ways . he says one thing and promptly does another ..what a headcase *WALL*
also do not draft anymore knuckleheads you have to baby set . we are in no postsion to take anymore Manziels , Dilberts or Wests . draft guys who will come in and WORK ! Mangini had the right idea of drafting guys with strong work ethics and character .. I still miss him .
what makes anybody think that any team would want him ?? maybe the Cowboys or Texans ..send his sorry ass back to the land of steers & queers ...ASAP !
Irish, I would go for Foles if he can be had. I agree, none of the available vet QBs represent much, if any upgrade over Hoyer. As for Sanchez, he is what he is, which is a backup QB. Not much of a head for the game, and generally not regarded as a great teammate. Tends to do and say the wrong things. Just not very sharp as a QB or leader. I know nobody wants it, but Hoyer is probably our best option. If you would give Foles a contract what might you offer Hoyer? The feeling I gei is he isn't interestec in staying, and I am thinkiing he absolutely doesn't if Manziel is on the roster, which sad to say he probably will be, and also probably shouldn't be, but money talks. Everyone knows I was never a fan, so take it with a grain of salt, he has failed to show "any" skill, desire, or head for the position, What he has shown is he is pretty good in front of the cameras, knows what to say. I get the sense he "knows" what the right thing to do is, but just can't bring himself to spend the time and energy to make professional QB his career (even assuming he has the skillset to make it). I like Foiles. I think he's got the skills, and the right mindset to be a QB. He doesn't seem to react much to the Philly fans constantly downgrading him, and isn't looking for the spotlight. He certainly has the arm, and if Gordon can stay in the league, he and Foles himght be deadly. Is Chip so anxious to have Marriota that he'd part with Foles? Well scuttlebutt in Philly sports radio (a questionable source to be sure), point out that keeping Foles essentially locks Chip into Foles for his career, and they don't think Chip, who wants revolutionize the NFL, wants his wagon hitched to Foles when one of his own is there to be had. We'll see, but from a Browns perspective, a pretty solid option IMO.
IMHO, Nick Foles is only marginally better than Brian Hoyer. He definitely has better arm strength but I don't believe he is as cerebral as Hoyer. (Admittedly, I know nothing about his work ethic or leadership qualities). So now the question becomes do we pass on bolstering the TEAM and pay the minor ransom for Foles (for only a one year guarantee) -or- do we improve the entire team around the QB position and go the "game manager" route until such time that a "franchise QB" is available? The Browns are in a very unique situation this off season. Not only do they have A LOT of money to spend on Free Agents -AND- will be forced by the league to spend it . . . they also have extra high draft picks. They are in a position to add starting caliber talent where they need it through free agency and then go draft additional talent that isn't required to start and perform at the NFL level out of the gate. In other words, draft to fill holes that will open 2 to 3 three years down the road. <--- THAT, gentlemen, is what the consistently good teams do. When one racks their brain to solve a problem that has "very few options", they almost always "reach" for a solution and then justify the reach after the fact. The Browns have reached for Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy (kind of), Brandon Weeden and, most recently, Johnny Manziel. I think we've proven the point that reaching doesn't work. How about we try the 2000 Ravens' approach instead? Build a punishing defense and running game and manage the game with a Trent Dilfer type QB.
*SCRATCH* Not sure there is a Trent Dilfer caliber QB available... I would bring back Hoyer IF they can find a home for Manziel and they give full reign to Hoyer. I think Hoyer will cost more than Foles, except for the 1st round pick, so it will be a wash. I would feel better with Foles, than Hoyer to be honest. I think we saw Hoyer's best shot and the entire team will need to carry Hoyer at all times. Many have forgotten, Foles had one helluva 2013 season, 64% completion for 2,891 yards with 27 TDs to 2 INTs in 13 games...With Pat Shurmur "OC"...OK OK, He was just a figure head for Chip Kelly, but when Kelly realized an NFL head coach takes more time than a college head coach, Foles was somewhat left behind this year falling a little out of favor with the coach from Oregon. That is why we could get the trade made imho. Kelly knows he will need ammo to get Mariota, he would need to chance losing Foles for any chance at Mariota.
There inlies the problem Ken...What would Hoyer accept? It is pretty clear Farmer, and I think even Pettine, aren't that high on Hoyer. So you have a real dilemma..a QB you aren't confident in, what's he worth? Then a QB who has more confidence in himself than the club he is leaving...I think Hoyer will find better money in a less dysfunctional environment this off season and we will not even be given consideration from him. He came here to have a chance to start. He was given the chance, then had it taken away for a 1st round draft pick that wasn't here when he signed...I think he will be looking at greener pastures. Frankly, the way it ended up last year, I think it is best for all involved. Hoyer may be the best available option, but it isn't by any measurable amount. Sanchez, Matt Flynn, Matt Moore, Ryan Mallett, Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker, hell Colt McCoy...they are all the same caliber as Hoyer. Any are capable of finishing between the 20-25th best QB in the NFL when paired with a dominant defense and top ten rushing defense, which is what we will need to win any time soon...
If they can find a home for Manziel ??? As in a trade ??? Who would be stupid enough to trade for him? Answer: NOBODY !!! 31 other teams have seen what he brings to the table. o Excessive hype and a media circus. o Unwillingness to work at his craft and prepare himself to be an NFL starting QB. o A keen ability to say publically what people want to hear then turn around and do exactly what HE wants to do. Their only option is to let Johnny continue to be Johnny and firmly park his ass on the bench until such time that his Dead Money is less than his annual contract money. And Hoyer's best shot (with the entire team "carrying" him) was good enough for a 7-3 record and still in playoff contention. I submit that better depth on the O-Line and/or a healthy O-Line and Defense for an entire season, the 2014 version of the Browns would still have been in playoff contention in week 16 or maybe even week 17. Many have forgotten that Derek Anderson also had a helluva season in 2007. Then they broke out the film on him and we all know how that turned out. It might be that when they broke out the film on Foles, they discovered he was a one trick pony and couldn't adapt or improve. NFL dog houses are chock full of ex-QB's who couldn't adapt or improve. If Kelly really wants Mariota . . . then he better be setting his sights on Tampa Bay or Tennessee - not Cleveland.
I agree with your last statement in particular. A dominant D coupled with a strong running game will make a game manager successful. We have that in Hoyer, plus a proven record of being smart and being able to read Defenses. Now you can argue that those talents faded as the season wore on, and I wouldn't argue that, but by then he no longer was playing for a team with a solid running game, and dominant D. I really liked the Hoyer who started the season, and I still believe our early success was largely a product of Hoyer's dogged study and understanding of an all new system which he undeniably helped others to understand and operate in. Well we're about to do that again, and short of Foles, none of the other guys impress enough to trust them to even match Hoyer's season start. I just don't think Hoyer will come back to Cleveland, without a penalty in dollars, and / or a promise that Manziel won't be part of the team. Two things that I doubt the FO is willing or able to do, so he's probably no more than a 10% shot. I agree with Lym on the strategy of accepting that we aren't going to have our franchise QB in 2015, so build the D, and make the running game bulletproof, and let's go. There simply are no "magic bullets" this year to use. Maybe they trade some picks this year to bolster next year's drafting position, so we can be in the QB sweepstakes next year.
