Browns owner Jimmy Haslam needs some good PR, so it?s a good time for him to be embraced by the best player in franchise history.

Haslam will formally introduce Jim Brown as a member of the team?s front office on Wednesday, according to Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland. Brown has had a number of roles within the organization in the past, but he and the team have been estranged for the last three years, after former team President Mike Holmgren removed Brown from the front office structure.

It?s not clear exactly what the 77-year-old Brown will do for the Browns, but his exact title is less important than the simple fact that he?ll be on good terms with the team again.

For Haslam, who?s at the center of an ongoing controversy with his truck-stop company, getting to stand up and embrace the man who?s regarded by many as the greatest player ever to play the game of football will provide some rare positive publicity.

i know its hard to read all that gobbledygook .but these guys have nailed every rumour that has come out to date long before the media got hold of it .its why i think there is some truth to it . they know people inside the Browns organization . i hope they miss on this one .

my best guess is the one who gets suspended is Bryant or both of them since they had run ins with the law last Spring . that makes the most sense .

Before the Browns welcome legendary running back Jim Brown back into the fold, the Browns will make a ?major announcement? regarding the manner in which the upcoming football season will get started.

The Browns have announced that, at 3:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Browns will announce that a ?global rock icon? will launch the 2013 season in July.

Browns CEO Joe Banner, President Alec Scheiner, and ?prominent Browns players? will attend the event at the South Club Lounge at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Make your guesses below as to who it will be. The Factory of Sadness guy likely isn?t rooting for Kenny Chesney.

As I always do in situations like this, I?ll vote for KISS.

NFL pushes draft back two weeks, only major change
Posted by Darin Gantt on May 28, 2013, 12:04 PM EDT

Getty ImagesWell, now we know how much later the draft will be next year.

The league just posted a ?save the date? card on its Facebook page, informing fans the 2014 NFL Draft will be held May 8-10, 2014, at New York?s Radio City Music Hall.

That?s two weeks later than this year?s, after they initially considered pushing it back three weeks.

Picking that weekend might have been a tacit concession to the push-back from all the football types who have complained about the later start, by making it slightly less longer than it could have been.

The league has also announced that the Scouting Combine would be held Feb. 18-25, with the league year starting March 11, keeping everything in place.

That means that other than two weeks more for mock drafts and hype, everything else stays the same, for now.

Gipson says despite overcoming long odds to make the team and then become a starter from Wyoming, he has no doubts he can play at a high level in the NFL.

BEREA?There is an often used saying about the difference a year makes and nothing is truer than for second-year safety Tashaun Gipson.

The undrafted free agent from Wyoming was just trying to catch the eye of former Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and coach Pat Shurmur at this time in 2012.

Fast forward 12 months and Gipson is running with the first team under a new regime in defensive coordinator Ray Horton and Rob Chudzinski.

?It?s definitely night and day,? Gipson said after wrapping up the second week of the Browns Organized Team Activity (OTA) practices. ?I am coming in here with a whole new mentality (this year).

?Last year, I was trying to latch on and now I?m out there with the starters,? he said. ?I know it will be a big question to people with a second-year undrafted free agent, but as long as the coaches have confidence in me I know I have confidence in myself and my ability and I will leave it in God?s hands.?

The Browns did not re-sign Usama Young and released Eric Hagg earlier this week, paving the way for Gipson. Right now, the safeties believed to be competing for the free safety spot opposite of T.J. Ward are Gipson, Johnson Bademosi and rookie Jamoris Slaughter.

?As far as that aspect I have no control,? Gipson said. ?The upper level management makes decisions they feel are best for the team, but all I can do is go with the flow.

?It gives me great opportunity,? he said. ?I just want to do my job and am blessed to be in this position.?

Bademosi is being converted from cornerback to safety after making the team as an undrafted free agent from Stanford last year. He was a stalwart on special teams in 2012 for the Browns.

?I?ve been pleased with him,? Chudzinski said. ?(Bademosi?s) taken that role and is also learning a new position. He looks pretty good at safety. We?ll keep playing him there and some at corner and see where it goes from there.?

Slaughter has yet to practice after tearing his Achilles tendon in the third game last year at Notre Dame. He was drafted in the sixth-round in April and is expected to be ready for training camp.

Chudzinski anticipates the safety position to be hotly contested in training camp.

?(Gipson?s) done a nice job and also some of the young guys have been given opportunities,? Chudzinski said. ?That will be a very competitive position in training camp when the pads go on and we start to hit.?

Gipson (5-11, 205) feelings it is a blessing in disguise that he was an undrafted free agent, which allows him to keep his edge.

?That?s one of the things that I?m definitely blessed to be in this situation coming from last year to be labeled as an undrafted guy starting in the secondary,? he said. ?I feel my play will answer any questions that need to be answered, but I definitely stay humbled through this whole experience.?

Gipson says despite overcoming long odds to make the team and then become a starter from Wyoming, he has no doubts he can play at a high level in the NFL.

?There?s not even a point zero chance I don?t belong with the big guys,? he said. ?A young guy like myself, being just 22 years old, has to have confidence.

?If you have confidence and can back it up with your ability, it will help me to have a successful year for me.?

    Notebook

TRich, Cameron Sidelined: RB Trent Richardson (lower leg muscle strain-shin) and TE Jordan Cameron (groin) sat out of Thursday?s practice.

Chudzinski said both were held out as precautionary measures, but Chudzinski said Richardson might not practice in the upcoming minicamp.

?(Richardson) might miss minicamp,? he said. ?With Cameron, it is his groin and again, we?re being precautionary.?

WR David Nelson (knee) and S Jamoris Slaughter (Achilles) did not participate in practice.

Never Enough: Chudzinski was asked about bringing back UFA RB Brandon Jackson. Currently, the Browns stable of backs consists of five backs who have played in the NFL in Trent Richardson, Montario Hardesty, Chris Ogbonnaya, Dion Lewis and Jackson. In addition, they have undrafted rookie free agent Miguel Maysonet.

?I always felt like you can?t have enough good running backs,? Chudzinski said. ?Brandon has been successful in this league and he is an experienced guy. You can?t have enough running backs.?

Lewis was brought over in a trade with the Eagles and is looked at as a possible third down back as well as a kick returner.

?Dion has done a nice job,? Chudzinksi said. ?He has shown some skills from what I?ve seen and he shows some good pass catching ability.?

No Desmond: DE Desmond Bryant was absent from OTA practice. Chudzinski said he was dealing with a legal issue.

?He has a legal matter that he?s taking care of,? Chudzinski said.

It is presumed it is the misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief for allegedly being drunk last February and wandering into a neighbor?s house in Miami. He had a mug shot taken that went viral on the internet.

Good Progress for Weeden: Last week, QB Brandon Weeden said he had a bad day on the day that practice was open to the media. This week, he looked very sharp. He hit WR Travis Benjamin streaking down the sideline for a 45-yard touchdown and completed passes to WR Davone Bess and Greg Little in setting up a field goal in the two-minute offense.

?You guys are out here one day,? Chudzinski said. ?I?ve seen a progression with Brandon. With these quarterbacks it?s not going to be about one day. It?s over a course of time. They?re all doing a good job.?

Weeden has OK on his Mind: Weeden is from Oklahoma and has relatives in Moore, OK, cite of the deadly tornado and he plans to go back there this weekend and lend a hand. Weeden played college football at Oklahoma State.

?I?m going back there to work and help out,? he said. ?I?ll do anything, whether it?s getting in the rubble or whatever, I?ll be there to help.?

Versatile Greco: Last year, when OL Jason Pinkston was lost for the season with a blood clot in his lung, John Greco stepped in and was very productive. He ended up starting 10 games at left guard.

Greco was lining up at right guard and Pinkston was at left guard with the first team in team drills.

?John?s doing a nice job learning a lot of different positions,? Chudzinski said. ?He came in last year and did a nice job. He?s showed he can handle a lot of different things.?

Greco is trying to build on the opportunity he received last year to be the starter.

?That?s my mindset, to play wherever the coaches want me to,? he said. ?Whether it be on the left side or right side. I want to be ready every week.?

Draft Day: The film crew for the upcoming movie, ?Draft Day? is around the Browns facility filming. They are expected to be shooting video about the movie starring Kevin Costner for the next several weeks. Costner was at the Browns practices earlier in the week, but wasn?t seen on Thursday

BEREA, Ohio -- As dark clouds gathered last Thursday afternoon, Browns special teams coordinator Chris Tabor worked with four rookies, teaching them how to align properly and protect the punter.

The veterans were long gone, off the practice fields and in the locker room. Coach Rob Chudzinksi had just finished a media obligation. The sky began to spit rain as Tabor and a few assistants tutored the youngsters on the importance of the unit. One of them was outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo.

Would Tabor really use the No. 4 overall pick in the draft as a human shield for the punter?

"Everybody trains," the coach said. "It never hurts you to train guys because in our world anything can happen. It's happened before when you put a guy out on the field who hasn't practiced in weeks, but you trained him in [organized team activities] and minicamps and his recall is faster."

Special teams coaches are accustomed to rebuilding. Perhaps no NFL coordinator, however, is dealing with as much uncertainty as Tabor. While he's one of just two assistants from the previous staff retained ? offensive line coach George Warhop is the other ? Tabor must replace Phil Dawson and Josh Cribbs.

Who's the last Browns assistant to lose a pair of Pro Bowlers in one off-season? It's believed the new regime made no significant effort to keep the popular free agents who departed for the Bay Area -- Dawson to San Francisco and Cribbs to Oakland.

They were key pieces in helping the Browns finish 10th and third in special teams rankings compiled by footballoutsiders.com over the past two seasons.

"It was obviously great to coach those guys," Tabor said. "I feel very fortunate. But at the same time I'm excited about this group and the challenges that lie ahead and the things that we can build upon. In some areas we will start from scratch but that's OK. In my opinion as a coach that's the fun process."

Dawson's departure has drawn the wrath of many Browns fans. CBS analyst Steve Tasker, a former Pro Bowl special teams ace, understands the love for Dawson, but believes the absence of Cribbs is also substantial. Named to the NFL all-decade team, the Kent State product not only returned kicks and punts, but covered them as well.

"I think Cribbs is potentially a bigger loss over the course of a season," Tasker said. "He's a home-run hitter in the return game and a hammer on cover teams. . . . He sets the tone for the young guys to start taking pride in special teams."

One special-teams contributor the Browns refused to release was Tabor. According to an ESPN report, as many as six teams were denied permission to interview him. Oh, the irony.

As a young college coach, Tabor admits he tried to "avoid special teams like the plague." The former quarterback never played on the units save for a few holds on place-kicks. But since acquiring the punt-coverage responsibilities at Utah State in 2005, Tabor has immersed himself in special teams.

"In two years, special teams has shown great improvement [in Cleveland] and were one of the top units in the league last season," Chudzinski said. "In just sitting down and interviewing with Chris, it was easy to see why. He's very organized, he communicates very well with the players and has a good system and understanding of what needs to get done in that phase."

Tabor must replace a kicker, punter, kickoff and punt returners. Long snapper Christian Yount is the only specialist back this season.

The coordinator shed little light on the battle between kickers Shayne Graham and Brandon Bogotay, other than to say he doesn't expect to keep a kickoff specialist.

Travis Benjamin figures to inherit the punt-return duties, but Tabor plans to audition many return men including both gunners last season, Johnson Bademosi and Buster Skrine. While coaching the Chicago Bears from 2008 to 2010, Tabor involved three players -- Devin Hester, Johnny Knox and Danieal Manning -- in the return game.

"They all excelled for us and you were able to do different things with them because they had different skill sets," Tabor said of the Bears returners. "That's what we want to get to here, developing a bunch of guys. I just don't need that one guy."

Tabor is detail obsessive, going as far as to tell a reporter inquiring about his hometown of St. Joseph, Mo., that it was the starting point of the Pony Express and end of the line for Jesse James, killed there in 1882.

"Betcha you didn't know that," he said.

Asked about Cribbs, Tabor concedes he's one of his all-time favorite players, but that his absence presents an opportunity for others to make a name for themselves and the Browns.

"The young guys have to step up and do those things and learn from the guys in the past," Tabor said, "and get that swagger, so to speak, that we are a good special-teams unit and we're going to continue that tradition."

Even as the two players who helped establish it are now on either side of the Bay Bridge.
