The Browns confirm Brian Hoyer has been benched for Johnny Manziel.

In a statement released by the team, Hoyer said he was "disappointed" by coach Mike Pettine's decision, but that he'll "be there to support Johnny." Hoyer has been perhaps the league's worst quarterback over the past six weeks, completing just 53.4 percent of his throws while posting a 3:10 TD:INT ratio. The move should have been made a week ago

Shanahan is a pretty imaginative playcaller. With a week to prepare I think this move will pay early dividends. The question is 1) Can Johnny stay healthy? and 2) Can Manziel play a more traditional role once teams adjust to the non-traditional game plan?

    Heeeerrres Johnny !!!

Show time begins Sunday at First Energy Stadium.

The place should be rocking !

I truly don't know what to expect from Johnny, but I am 100% certain the crowd will be loud. I would expect the energy level of the entire team to be elevated. Then we'll see what they can do with all that energy.

I am looking for the D to come out agressive and try to put Dalton back into that dark place he spent the last Cleveland / Cincinnati game. If they can do that, I don't think he'll recover. The Crowd will keep the heat on, and the D will keep coming.

    On the O side ????

Johnny B Good.......... really not his nature, so go ahead and be the bad boy. Just win!

I have friend of mine that did this . then the dumbass gets a DUI .he should have just stayed in the field me thinks .

I just hope Gordon goes all out instead of running the wrong routes and helps the kid out . he didn't do Hoyer any favors with his lazy uninspired play .

why the hell did Cameron run the wrong route on the end zone pick Hoyer threw ? still suffering from that hit in the coconut ?

  7. bluez M.V.P. Browns Indians

I am not convinced Manziel can play from the pocket . one of a few things he will have to prove .

  8. kendawg Guest

I would expect to see a half dozen plays that are "schoolyard scrambles", which is to say Johnny will be dancing and looking for one of the recievers to react and give him a target, or throw him a block downfield. Anyone want to bet that guy will be Gordon?

Put this one on the "Red Rifle" and we win !!

By the way how awesome was it to see the "return team" having a positive impact on field position? Yah !!!

  9. kendawg Guest

Bluez try to contain your enthusiasm.

We can beat Cinci, and if we do we get Carolina without a Cam (car accident today), and Baltimore without Ngata.

We could win out. Can anyone imagine the Browns finishing at 10 and 6?

    Hey. It could happen..................

Duff, what was in that last batch?

  10. FINALLY! It's Johnny Football time! Like someone said already. It should of been made a week ago!

We are going to see Johnny this year. A nice 3 game sample and against 2 division foe's. Nice! I didn't want him going into next year with no starts under his belt. We have to see how he reacts here. Will he move the team? Will he spark the team? Will he put us in position to win? Will he protect the ball? These are my questions that I want answered on Sunday. I already know his physical abilities. I'm not worried about that. I want to know if he is mentally ready for this game. That's another question I have.

Well off to bed my fellow Lounge Houndz. I got a call today for a nice little hit at that new Hilton downtown for tomorrow! I'll be fire proofing. Then after the new year I'm going to Crocker Park in Westlake for that new American Greetings. That will be nice because it's only 15 minutes from my house! I keep thinking only 21 more years to go!!!!! RETIREMENT, BABY! lol

    GOOOOOO Browns!

    Manziel now the man

Now that he has switched gears on his quarterback, Mike Pettine must not attach a leash to rookie Johnny Manziel in his starting debut this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It?s only fair because the Browns? coach did not attach one to Brian Hoyer when he had every reason to in the Indianapolis loss last Sunday.

Manziel must be allowed to quarterback the Browns unfettered the rest of the way this season. Good, bad or otherwise, he should be given every opportunity to prove himself as a National Football League quarterback.

In elevating Manziel to the top spot, Pettine said, ?This decision is really not about Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel. It is about the Cleveland Browns. We are trying to make decisions we feel are in the best interests of the team.?

If that is, indeed, the case and it?s all about the Browns, why didn?t Pettine make the obvious move in the Colts game when the ineptitude of the offense throughout the game all but begged for a change?

The coach made such a move in the loss to Buffalo the week before. He said his team needed a spark at the time and Manziel provided it. Then he sat that spark back down in favor of a quarterback who hasn?t played well since week six.

Reaching for a reason to justify his switch to Manziel, Pettine said, ?Johnny has worked very hard to earn this opportunity and it will be very important for every member of the offense to elevate their play for us to obtain the desired result.?

Question: What makes Manziel any better this week than he was last week? Why is he so much better that he is now ready to take on the NFL with the full confidence of the coaching staff?

Answer: He?s not any better today than he was yesterday. Or the day before. Or the day before that. And the coaching staff is crossing its fingers he doesn?t do anything stupid.

But you know he will. He?ll make rookie mistakes. It?s bound to happen. Rookies make mistakes. That?s a fact. They just don?t step in and perform as though they?ve played the game for several seasons. Pettine will have to live with that.

Count on Manziel to dazzle on one play and puzzle on the next. He?ll make plays that will have you shaking your head and wondering, ?How did he do that?? And then he?ll make plays that will make you say, ?What in the world was he thinking?? Get used to it.

He?ll be dynamic, exasperating, unpredictable and highly competitive. And you will be riveted to everything he does.

The only reason Manziel has been tapped to start the rest of the season is because Hoyer has become a bad quarterback and is hurting his team. The 7-6 Browns could very easily be challenging for the AFC North lead with at least a 9-4 record with any decent play from the most important position on the team.

Pettine tried to soften the blow for Hoyer, suggesting the deposed starter would have played better with help from his teammates. ?The quarterback is only as good as his supporting cast, so when the guys around him play well, Brian plays well,? he said. ?It?s rare that a quarterback can transcend his supporting cast.?

That?s right. Blame his teammates. That will sit well in the locker room (sarcasm intended). Members of the offense will love that little quote. Many of them have been around long enough to know bad quarterbacking when they see it.

Most notable are the receivers who are open and either overthrown or have to reach back for passes. And the offensive linemen who have given him solid protection for the most part only to see him miss wide-open receivers.

How about the defense that turns the ball over in plus territory for Hoyer only to watch him squander those opportunities game in and game out. Twenty turnovers in the last eight games have produced 39 points.

Is that what Pettine means when he says Hoyer plays well when those around him do, too?

Most of the team sees what most of us see: A quarterback whose accuracy has plummeted to the point where he is totally ineffective. Opposing defenses try to shut down the Browns' running game, daring Hoyer to throw the ball. Now they've got the mercurial Manziel to deal with.

Up to now, Pettine managed to justify keeping Hoyer under center, citing his record as a starter. After the Colts? loss, though, he has run out of reasons. He really had no choice.

And now that the coach finally has made that choice, the circus that always seems to accompany Manziel will open its turnstiles for at least the next three games as the national sports spotlight shines on Cleveland.

For better or worse, Manziel has now become the face of this franchise. And he didn?t have to do anything special to achieve that status.

Bottom line: Manziel did not earn the starting job. Hoyer lost it.

I think I'm already used to saying, "What was he thinking?" with Hoyer's play the last 5-6 games. At least the rookie has an excuse for being a noob.

It sure could. If we do, that puts an additional loss on both Cincinnati and Baltimore.

    Lets start with the Bengals;

    Week 15: @CLE Loss
Week 16: DEN Loss - No way they can keep up with P. Manning & Co.
Week 17: @PIT Loss - Tough place to win especially if, by now, you're out of the race.

Bengals finish up at 8-7-1 (2-4-0 in Division).

    Next up - the Ravens;

Week 15: JAX Win - no comment required.
Week 16: @HOU Win - could just as easily be a loss.
    Week 17: CLE Loss

Ravens finish up at 10-6-0 (2-4-0 in Division).

    Now the Steelers;

Week 15: @ATL Loss - Matty Ice & Co. win a shootout at home.
Week 16: KC Win - A close game won on the ground.
Week 17: CIN Win - Bengals are packing their U-Hauls by now.

Steelers finish up at 10-6-0 (4-2-0 in Division).

Now here's the kick in the chops: The Browns, Ravens and the Steelers would all be 10-6-0 and tied for the AFCN crown. Both the Browns and Steelers would be 4-2-0 in the Division (Ravens eliminated at 2-4-0). Both the Browns and Steelers would be 1-1 in head to head with each other. The 3rd tiebreaker is better record against AFC opponents. Steelers take this one with a 9-3-0 versus our Browns 6-6-0 record.

Would a 10-6-0 record get us a Wild Card berth? Maybe, maybe not. I would rather just learn how to do the Tomahawk Chop and sing that stupid War Chant hoping that the Chiefs win in week 16.

It all starts THIS WEEK against the Bengals. If we lose - then everything above is a mute point.

Well, let's take it a step further in your scenario, which I find very possible...

AFC East, the Patriots have all but won the division
AFC West, the Broncos have all but won the division
AFC North, Scenario..Steelers win the division
AFC South, the Colts have all but won the division

That leaves the following in your scenario Ravens, whom you already covered with the scenario, Browns win on tie breakers

    Chargers currently 8-5:
    Week 15 Denver:
    Week 16 @San Francisco
    Week 17 @Kansas City

This is the toughest schedule of the teams remaining, if they come out 1-2, it would be a victory 9-7

    Texans currently 7-6:
    Week 15 @Indianapolis loss
Week 16 Baltimore loss in your scenario
    Week 17 Jacksonville win

With your scenario coming true, Texans most likely finish 8-8, I see 9-7 as their best scenario after Indy takes care of business..

    Dolphins currently 7-6:
    Week 15 @New England Loss
    Week 16 Minnesota Win
    Week 17 N.Y. Jets Win
I see them being eliminated from our scenario with their loss to the Patriots this week final 9-7

    Chiefs currently 7-6:
Week 15 Oakland Win, but the way they have been playing could be a loss
Week 16 @Pittsburgh, in your scenario Loss
Week 17 San Diego I will call this a win at home
In your scenario, the Steelers help us out with a win to drop the Chiefs to 9-7

    Bills currently 7-6:
    Week 15 Packers Loss
    Week 16 @Oakland win
    Week 17 @New England loss
No possible way they win all three of these games, could possibly lose all 3...my prediction 8-8

So, IF we could some how win all three games, then yes Lym, I could easily see the Browns making up the ground needed to get that final Wild Card alongside either the Chargers/Chiefs winner or the Ravens...

Win 3 and it is a very likely scenario we are in the Playoffs...

(edit:) I could also see the Steelers losing 2 out of 3, with the Browns taking their first AFC North Championship since it was called the AFC Central in 1989!!

  16. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

Thanks, Irish! I simply didn't have the time to take that next step.

    Bottom line it this:

It doesn't matter from here on out what the Steelers do. If they win out - they're AFCN Champ even if they choke in Atlanta. The only way for the Browns to win the AFCN is to (1) win out and (2) hope the Steelers drop two out of three.

  17. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Truth is, the Bengals can beat the Steelers week 17 and also put the Steelers out of their misery...moving the Browns into first place in the North after the Bengals drop week 15 to us and 16 to the Broncos...The Steelers don't have anything wrapped up, even if they win in Atlanta...

The most important aspect in this entire season comes THIS WEEK IN CLEVELAND. We must win to stay alive!!

  18. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

True . . . but the Bengals don't have a snappy/obnoxious You Tube clip like the Chiefs.

No, they just have that stupid fight song that you have to hear every time Dalton picks his nose.
