WESTLAKE, Ohio -- Jim Donovan, the voice of the Browns, received the Dino Lucarelli Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- Jim Donovan, the voice of the Cleveland Browns since 1999, was honored with the Dino Lucarelli Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Northeastern Ohio Chapter of National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet at La Centre Banquet Facility in Westlake on Tuesday evening.

?It?s amazing because that man that it?s named after, Dino Lucarelli, is the classiest, nicest, most honest, most giving person that I?ve ever met since coming to Ohio, just a friendly face that always wanted to do something good for everybody and is certainly a great ambassador for the Browns and Cleveland sports,? Donovan said of the award. ?It?s a great honor and it?s just wonderful to be recognized.

?Others who have been the voice of the Browns before me took it very, very seriously, and I think it?s a position that not a lot have had, so it?s a small club, but it?s a great club to be a part of. If that carries with it the responsibility to be the ambassador of Cleveland Browns football, I accept the challenge and the responsibility. I really do believe when the Browns become a regular winner on Sunday afternoons, it will be one of the great renaissance American sports stories in a long time.?

Winning the award was especially meaningful for Donovan because of a personal battle he has been fighting for more than a decade. He was diagnosed with a form of leukemia in the summer of 2000, but battled through many forms of treatment and remained in the broadcast booth until May of 2011.

Donovan took a leave of absence at that time to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Despite the long road to recovery following the transplant, Donovan made it back to the Browns? broadcast booth for the team?s home opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 11, 2011.

Donovan described overcoming leukemia as ?the greatest, greatest win of all.?

?I don?t think we could?ve ever gauged the love and the care and the prayers that came our way and how much they really helped us at a time when we really needed a lot of help and a lot of shoulders to wrap our arms around,? Donovan said. ?I don?t think we will ever forget that. I know I will never forget that. It?s something that really helped me through some tough times. I just thank the people of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio for accepting me and keeping me in their prayers because those prayers really helped me.?

Donovan was introduced at the banquet by his radio partner of 14 years, Doug Dieken.

?He has a passion, and is an amazing talent,? Dieken said. ?He is truly an amazing talent. The big thing about Jimmy is he?s a winner. When he does his sports, he wants to beat everybody else, and you admire that competitive attitude that he has, but it was tested 12 years ago when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He never complained about it, and that takes a hell of a person. My hat?s off to him because you can?t find anybody better than him. There?s been some great ones, and Jimmy?s right up there with the best of them.?

Donovan came to Cleveland in 1985 and served as WKYC Channel 3?s weekend sports anchor. He later became the station?s sports director, and was named the co-anchor of Channel 3 News? 7 p.m. broadcasts.

During his career, Donovan has hosted national coverage of the All-American Soap Box Derby from Akron, broadcast coverage of the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, including the swimming and soccer competitions in 1992, as well as the World Cup in 1994. In 1995, he received an Emmy award for the Best Sportscaster in Cleveland.

Before coming to Cleveland, Donovan, a graduate of Boston University, broadcast basketball, baseball and hockey games in Burlington, Vt., and later became the sports director at WJON Radio in St. Cloud, Minn.

?Something clicked, and I made a connection with the community, all the traditions, high school sports, college sports, and their affection for their pro sports teams,? Donovan said. ?I latched onto that because there?s a bit of Boston in that. You?re very, very, very attached to your teams.

?I thought the sports teams drove the mood of the community and I liked that. I felt that and I wanted to be a part of that, so it?s been a real lucky time for me. I met my wife here. We?ve had a wonderful life here together, raised a beautiful daughter here and been a part of Cleveland sports.?

Former Boston College running back Josh Haden will try out with the Browns during their rookie minicamp, which will be held Friday through Sunday at the team's headquarters in Berea.

Josh Haden, 23, is the younger brother of Browns cornerback Joe Haden, 24, who used Instagram to post a photograph of Josh's nameplate on a locker in Berea.

After beginning his career at Boston College, Josh Haden transferred to Toledo but never became eligible to play football for the Rockets because of academic reasons.

    Comeback attempt

Former Browns linebacker Chris Gocong will try out with the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend during their rookie minicamp, the Eagles announced.

The Browns acquired Gocong in 2010 via a trade with the Eagles and cut him April 2. Gocong, 29, tore his right Achilles? tendon Aug. 4 during training camp and missed the entire 2012 season.

    Tour continues

Former Browns wide receiver and three-time Pro Bowl kick returner Josh Cribbs, 29, will visit the Detroit Lions after meeting with the Oakland Raiders, New York Jets and New York Giants, Jason La Canfora of CBS reported. Cribbs, who had been with the Browns since 2005, became a free agent in March.

Browns linebacker D?Qwell Jackson and former teammates Chris Gocong and Eric Barton have become ambassadors for Athlete Ally, an organization dedicated to ending homophobia in sports.

Athlete Ally announced the additions of Jackson, Gocong and Barton today on its website.

Former Browns and New Orleans Saints linebacker Scott Fujita, who recently retired from the NFL, is also an ambassador for the group. He recruited Jackson and former Browns linebackers Gocong and Barton.

?I am forever grateful to the game of football for teaching me the value of teamwork and sportsmanship and honored that my former teammates recognize their responsibility as role models in our culture,? Fujita said in the announcement. ?With each new Athlete Ally that speaks out, an LGBT athlete may feel more comfortable in his or her sport, and will know that there is support. It is clear by the advocacy of these players that Cleveland is a welcoming environment. That is something I am very proud of.?

Since NBA veteran Jason Collins announced last month that he is gay in a first-person essay for Sports Illustrated, the debate about whether an openly gay player would be accepted in the NFL has intensified. As part of Athlete Ally?s announcement, Jackson indicated he would welcome a gay teammate.

?I believe that everyone should be treated the same,? Jackson said in the announcement. ?That's my thought as a person and as a teammate. Joining Athlete Ally is my way of letting it be known that I would respect any teammate -- gay or straight. It just doesn't matter.?

    Gocong echoed Jackson?s sentiment.

?Scott Fujita was a pioneer in the player movement to create an inclusive environment in the NFL, and I feel it is my duty to help continue that work as the league moves from tolerance to acceptance,? Gocong said in the announcement. ?I want to support any athlete to feel more comfortable and confident being himself.?

Jackson, Gocong, and Barton join Fujita, Brendon Ayanbadejo, Chris Kluwe, Donte Stallworth and Connor Barwin as NFL players who serve as ambassadors for Athlete Ally. They act as liaisons between the organization and the league, promote the group's mission and encourage their colleagues to join the effort.

    GM to speak

Browns General Manager Mike Lombardi is scheduled to address the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club on Monday afternoon at Tozzi?s on 12th in Canton.

Lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. The program is set to begin at 12:10 p.m.

    T-Rich makes list

Browns running back Trent Richardson is ranked 71st on NFL Network?s ?Top 100 Players of 2013.? Richardson?s place on the list was revealed Thursday night.

Richardson played with broken ribs the majority of his rookie season in 2012 and compiled 267 carries for 950 yards (3.6 average) and 11 touchdowns to go along with 51 catches for 367 yards and a touchdown in 15 games.

    Rookie minicamp underway

The Browns will hold their rookie minicamp today through Sunday. Reporters are invited to cover the minicamp today and Saturday.

Practice is open to the media from 2:30-3 p.m. today. Coach Rob Chudzinski and players are scheduled to be available at 3:45 p.m. The same schedule will be in place Saturday.

    Stay tuned for updates.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league?s new rule against players lowering their helmets into opponents doesn?t make the sport soft.

Asked on NFL Network what he would say to people who think he?s making the game less physical, Goodell said he?d say those people are wrong.

?Not true,? Goodell said. ?That?s one of the things that our Competition Committee, in working with all of our coaches and all of our football people throughout the league, focus on ? those dangerous techniques that don?t belong in the game. The reality is this happens very infrequently, which is good. But what the coaches all agreed to do in March was coach it out of the game. Nobody ever coaches to use the top of the helmet. It?s not only a head injury but it also could be a potential spinal cord injury. What we need to get back to is using the shoulder and that?s what the coaches all talked [about]. The fundamentals are to teach using the shoulder and that?s what the coaches want to do. They want to get back to the fundamentals.?

Many players, however, are opposed to the rule. And even many players who say the rule?s intent is good have questioned whether the officials will be able to enforce it properly, considering the way these hits can happen in the blink of an eye. But Goodell says that the league wouldn?t have passed the rule if it couldn?t be officiated, and the officials know the three elements that will have to be involved if a hit is going to be penalized under the new rule.

?That was obviously a major focus for our coaches, as rightfully so,? Goodell said. ?Dean Blandino, who is our new supervisor of officials, he?s really focused on three elements. One [is] squaring up. The second is getting your head down and using the crown of your helmet. And the third is delivering that blow. That?s whether it?s an offensive or defensive player. He is confident in talking with our officials that we can officiate that and we can do it properly. I?m confident they?ll be able to do that.?

At the moment, this rule appears to be unpopular with most players and most fans. The officials enforcing the rule consistently is the best hope Goodell has of getting the players and the fans on his side, accepting that the rule makes the game safer without making it less physical.

Speaking of gay .... I think old Roger is light in the loafers here ..he never played the game & he is killing it IMHO ..Fire the SOB already !the only commish i haven't liked is him .he has no clue ..go bake cookies or sumpthing ya ...... leave football for real men . it is a physical sport . whats next Nike team colored flags ?..disgusting to see the game i have loved since the mid sixties end up being played like it is now . the first time they call a TD back because a RB Lowered his head to plow into the endzone ..somehow i can see it happening to us .i will throw more than a fit ...disgusting !
