Nope, I'm saying they could have stayed put at 26 to grab another player and then took a QB in the second that has looked very good so far.

As for the Hoyer vs Manziel and the offense - players are still saying that Manziel has to get help in the huddle to make the play calls.

Marcus Smith, Deonne Buchannon, Jimmie Ward, Kelvin Benjamin were all available there but taking Benjamin then grabbing Garoppollo would have been a nice mix. Fix 2 needs instead of one. You could have went after another lineman later in the draft with the other 3rd you traded.

I can get you a link to the rumors on the Browns looking to add Cooks instead of Manziel (there was another name too). Give me a few minutes I am getting some dinner ready.

But before I go - I know you like to bet some brews from time to time. How bout a case a suds on Manziel vs Garoppollo for the better or longer career?

    Re-post;

As so many trolls have pointed out . . . it my OPINION and I'm entitled to it. And, unless Johnny Manziel turns out to be the stud that you think he is . . . my OPINION will not change.

If he is putting in the time (by all your accounts), then I submit he simply doesn't know how to study or chooses to skim through it.

If he is putting in the time (by all your accounts), then he would have been able to rattle off a play call when asked to do so during the Jon Gruden interview. He looked as if he was asked to explain Einstein's theory of relativity.

Do I have a narrow point of view? Probably. But also probably just as narrow as yours. Just 180 degrees opposite.

Some interesting quotes from JM today. Off memory...

    I wasn't ready to play.

Had I played better the outcome might have been different.

I didn't do anything special when I had the opportunity.

This has been a good read. Some interesting points but the fundamental difference I see between the two sides is JM's ceiling. One side sees him a a dynamic playmaker. The other side sees him as a guy that may never be a good starter. With those two mindsets I'm not sure how you can even discuss whether he should be the starter Week 1.

  4. camo and foil are your friends, tim. don't skimp on either of them.

And I can give you links dating back to January showing the Browns willing to trade #4 to move up and draft Manziel...

Is that what you are resorting to? Quoting rumor squabble?

Thank God Pettine made the call!

Like his choice or not, at least he stuck with the most important aspect: The starter has to "prepare" those last two weeks with the 1s or this O is going nowhere.

Hoyer's battle to keep Johnny at bay will never stop. That pressure will not go away, but I expect him to look much better having all the reps leading up to game 1.

He will lilely be experiencing his only chance to be a "starter" in the NFL, which is something of an indictment on his skill and potential. 5 years in the league, and his highlight reel is two games long and I sure am grateful for the only glimmer of hope we saw in the past 12 months.

That won him the status of incumbent starter, which was always a default because of the monumental ineptitude of his QB competitors (and that's being kind).

Can't be excited about him being the starter, but agree he is the better option "now". I sincerely hope Johnny grows up and becomes something special on the field, but so far he looks overwhelmed, and quite possibly dangerously unprepared.

If this team's starter remains Hoyer, then we are in for nothing special, and probably made a huge error in Manziel. C'mon Johnny, focus and learn. We need you.

Johnny hasn't shown much. Yet! ..........

    lol, holy hell Irish.

My point was that there is nothing saying that the Browns were locked into Manziel. Its a conversation that we have had before and we simply disagree.

I'll stand by my opinion that Jimmy will be a better professional quarterback than Johnny and the Browns dropped the ball drafting Manziel.

    You wanna take that bet?

Couldn't agree more Ken, we (I) am losing sight in this debate to the real subject...a starter has been named and can begin to get ready for the Steelers.

THAT should really be the talking point, not which one was chosen...

Thanks for getting us back on track.

    I'm not going any where, I'll take that bet {better read the fine print on my bets, I get to share in the consumption of said payoff}

I believe (and said so to great lengths if I recall) Manziel, Garoppolo AND Bridgewater will come out of this with nice careers. I said that they would all have better careers than Bortles, and despite his early love affair in the preseason, I stand by that. I think Bortles has a low ceiling and will be a middle of the road QB for the next ten years, while the other three will flirt with top five in their career for their generation, not saying top 5 of all time or anything stupid. But, in the end I do believe Manziel will end up with the better career.

I'm good with that. It's never a positive to knock 24 back on your own. *DRINK*

I would have to revisit that conversation but I do remember you being down on Bortles and the two of us disagreeing on Garoppollo.

We'll call it a bet and we can revisit this again at a later date.

  12. Im in....they had the NE play by play guy on 2day and he said Garrapolo was lost the 1st 2 weeks of camp and is doing what he did vs guys not making the team of Philly or Wash. Hes not the answer once Brady is retired

  13. Happy Birthday Lyman. It is GOAT WEEK!

  14. whoa, fine print in a bet? is that like rules in a knife fight?

As the incumbent bet winner on this board, I just want to understand the scope of this bet.

Irish says that Manziel, Garoppolo AND Bridgewater will end up with a better career than Bortles.

Tim says that Bortles will end up with a better career than Manziel, Garoppolo AND Bridgewater.

I see this thing ending up with both guys kissing their sister.

    1. Define "career". Might I suggest just picking a milestone (say 3 years)?
    2. Define "better". Might I also suggest agreeing (up front) on a set of readily available statistics.

I would avoid "team statistics" or you would end up with another Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl argument.

Here is my first reference to Garoppolo Way way back in January...

I don't recall saying much negative about Garoppolo, but who knows, it was a long road to the draft this year.

  17. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

You've won enough suds from me without stepping in demanding "suggestions" for someone else's..

First off the bet is that Tim says Garoppolo will have a better career than Manziel, that's all...so

    1. I would win by default, because Garoppolo will not even be a starter in the next 3 years behind Brady, he will be the next Hoyer to take his talents to a new team to be their "backup" savior.
    2. I think in the end it will be pretty easy to define "better" it will have to be based on career, not 3 years, unless of course both of their careers are over in that time period, in which case I will be willing to buy just about anyone a case of beer to share in my disappointment that we still don't have a viable starting QB 3 years from now.

  18. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

This is a Garoppolo vs Manziel bet?

    What happened to Bortles ???

(You remember him don't you? Drafted #3 overall in the 2014 draft ahead of both Bridgewater and Manziel) :p *DRINK*

  19. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

haha, Lym, your the only non Jags fan I know with a man crush on Bortles. He is gathering a band wagon this preseason, maybe they'll let you drive it.

  20. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

You got a link for that? I would like to read more about it.

He has probably supplanted Mallett on the depth chart and has been very sharp in both preseason games. He went 2-2 with a TD against the Eagles starting D in his second game.

I will gladly take your beer stopper.
