  1. U really are that clueless...I have said from the get go let the best man win as long as its fair....how can he show it if he doesnt get a shot w the starters....coming into a game after the game has started is not the same even if reps are same...u get amped up and now exactly when ur going into the game...Pettine is taking the safe route and playing the not to lose route philosophy

I am watching Bortles tonight play very very well . stays in the pocket making his reads . shrugs off a pass rusher and throws a strike down field .his prototypical size and strength has me wondering what could have been .

maybe Manziel will grow up .learn to stay in the pocket make his reads . all I can do is hope since we are stuck with him .

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Johnny Manziel was late to a team meeting on Monday.

Mort is under the impression Manziel and a few other Browns rookies simply "misread the schedule," but it's believed Johnny Football was fined. Adam Schefter reported Thursday night that there "seems to be a feeling within the organization that Brian Hoyer wins" the Browns' starting job "in the event of a tie." Schefter believes Cleveland's second preseason game will essentially decide the battle, because all along the plan has been to pick a starter before the third exhibition game. There are no indications that Manziel's tardiness will play a role in coach Mike Pettine's quarterback decision.

BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns on Thursday signed LB Caleb McSurdy. General Manager Ray Farmer made the announcement.

McSurdy is 6-1, 241-pounds and officially in his second NFL season out of Montana. Originally drafted by Dallas in the seventh round in 2012, McSurdy spent his rookie season on injured reserve and part of the 2013 season on the Rams? practice squad.

He appeared in 56 games at Montana and registered 100-plus tackles during his junior and season seasons. A native of Boise, Idaho, McSurdy graduated from Borah High School.

The Browns roster is currently at 90 players.

Isn't that the point of every sport: not to lose?

    Now who's clueless?

Stopper you are whinier than a two year old whose lunch is a half hour late!

Stopper, you can moan and groan about anything, can't you?

Surprised you're not whining about how bad the LA team is doing. Just looking at the attendance records, they haven't sold a single ticket.

Before you burn out those last two brain cells, that was sarcasm.

eh, sorry, I have to agree with Stopper here...Not so much as I WANT Manziel to start over Hoyer as much as I want to know with facts what each QB can do with the first string from play one of a game. Pettine can say all he wants about, it doesn't matter who starts, the reps will be equal. I am tired of opening a game with 3 and outs which sets a negative tone to the offense.

Last week Hoyer drove the Browns down to the 39 yard line of the Lions, not bad...but they punted from the 39 freaking yard line...I understand a 56 yard field goal is a pretty bad bet, but when you are to the 39, you don't have enough confidence in your QB to try to get 9 yards on another play? They punted to the 11 netting 28 yards on the punt...

Let's see how Manziel comes out of the gate firing...That's what I want to see.. Not, with the Browns up 6-3 after two series and he comes in with the 1's on Monday Night Football.

Sorry, but fair isn't the right word Stopper...REALISTIC competition is what I wanted to see. This is a dog and pony show, they were planning on starting Hoyer from day one, but didn't want the bad press of not letting Johnny compete. Well, now they are "competing" and Hoyer isn't running away with it even though he is playing with the first string. I personally would like questions answered. This isn't a competition as much as an escape to naming Hoyer the starter. I would have rather they grew some balls and simply named him the starter and begin preparing him for Pittsburgh if that is what they wanted to do all along.

  10. Ur wrong again....there is a difference in playing not to lose compared to trying to win, but I guess u only understand hooked on phonics w ur picture inserts and dont comprehend the meaning of my previous post

    Stopper -

Oh yes. Of course I'm wrong. I didn't coach football and have my team score 4 TD's in one game. Whatever you say there, Al Bundy.

You were the kid that took his ball and went home when you didn't get your way, weren't you?

  12. Its ok Irish...u can agree w me lol....pretty much what I was saying....they knew they wanted Hoyer from the get go....they started talking negative bout Johnny from the beginning and praising every move Hoyer made....I still dont understand the comment from above if its an even competition or tie, Hoyer gets the nod....shuldnt a rookie who was far behind in experience and system win out in that battle? I wuld assume he made up a lot of ground and will continue to grow each day therefore the ceiling is much higher.

  13. Never did that once

  14. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Again, I agree...If it is a "tie" then the nod should go to the one who is going to continue improving.

Look, Hoyer should have been well ahead of Manziel...and in the beginning he was. However, the moment Manziel catches Hoyer, that is when he should become the starter because he will then pass him naturally. Giving him the ball on gameday will help him acclimate faster than holding a clip board. At this point they both look like VERY good back up QBs, which we knew Hoyer could be already. He needed to step up big to show he deserved a starter role and simply hasn't. Doesn't mean I don't think we can't win some games with him. But, if Manziel is the 'same' QB at this point (only a few months into his career) then he needs to get pushed past that level now, not 3 weeks into the regular season after the bye week.

I have said all along, I want the guy who is going to get this team to the playoffs. At this point, I don't see that from either of these two...but at this point, I expected a lot more from Hoyer than Manziel, which he isn't showing.

Unfortunately, they may both be doomed to fail with this receiving group. I really hoped for one of these young receivers to step up as well, but it isn't happening. The only good news to come out of all of this is the LB that we passed on a receiver for seems to be the real deal. Let's hope Kirksey can help that defense hold the opponents to 9 points a game, because that may be what it takes to win this season.

Alas, we are only one game into preseason, plenty of time for my optimism to kick back in.

I have no problem with Irish's comment. It's your's that I do, Stopper. The difference: Irish isn't whining like a little kid cause he's not getting his way.

I know reading comprehension and retention of said matter is not your strong suit, Stopper, but go back and re-read Irish's comment. He simply states what he would have liked to have seen. And that's it. No persistent whining and moaning and doom and gloom. Try it sometime and maybe you'd actually get a modicum of respect around here.

  16. I culd care less bout respect from u....we will prbly never cross paths in our lifetime....so its a moot point. We know u are all over his jock, so u will look at his posts in a different mind set when he even mentioned he agreed w me...I just cant wait until Tues or mayb even Mon night to see how Pettine spins his comments.

  17. Duff_Beer_Doug Franchise Player Browns Indians C&D Club

And that is wherein lies your problem. You have no respect for anybody because, "I'm never going to meet them. So what do I care?" Take a look at the rest of the posters around here and maybe you'll see that they have respect for others' opinions when they don't jibe with their own. And after that, they have a civil argument where facts are used to argue a point rather than just a petty opinion. The point in contention may never be settled, but things are discussed and we learn where others are coming from and have respect for their viewpoints. It's called civility.

Ummmm....no. Actually, I don't mind Irish having a different opinion. It's the way he presents it. Also see the above comment.

It now seems that the NFL is simply messing with receiver Josh Gordon and the Browns.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that a decision on Gordon?s appeal won?t come until late next week. The hearing ended 10 days ago, on August 4.

Schefter attributed the delay to the lengthy hearing, which resulted in extra time being needed to transcribe the hearing. Which is, quite frankly, a load of crap.

I?m not saying Schefter is full of crap. I?m saying whoever told him that is.

Transcripts can be prepared very quickly, almost instantaneously. In this case, the testimony began on Friday, August 1, with the hearing running from 9:30 a.m. ET until 7:00 p.m. ET. The process of preparing the written transcript could have ? and should have ? begun immediately. The second day of testimony, which lasted roughly three hours on Monday, August 4, likewise could have been turned around quickly on Monday night.

Modern stenograph machines can digitally translate the configurations of letters into words, permitting a tentative transcript to be instantly generated. A draft could have been given to hearing officer Harold Henderson while the court reporter proofread the transcript and/or compared the written product to the audio tapes of the testimony. Key portions of the testimony (and five percent at most of any testimony is crucial to the outcome of a case) could have been clarified specifically for Henderson, if he had questions about whether a ?yes? was really a ?no? or some other important word was something other than what the transcript suggests.

Regardless, it?s goofy to think that Henderson couldn?t have had a complete, tentative transcript by Tuesday, August 5, the day after the hearing concluded. Especially in a case where Gordon faces not a 16-game suspension but a full year. Three hundred and sixty-five days. The sooner it starts, the sooner it ends, the sooner the Browns get Gordon back.

And while Henderson surely will be issuing a lengthy, written opinion, he can issue the decision at any time, with the understanding that the written opinion will follow. Surely, Henderson knew at or about the time the hearing ended on August 4 what he planned to do.

It?s already shameful, as explained on Thursday?s PFT Live, that the NFL doesn?t generally expedite the appeals process. Players and their teams need to know the ultimate status of a potentially suspended player, especially when that suspension would, if upheld, last for a full year.

Instead, Gordon learned of his proposed suspension in early May at the latest, and yet his hearing didn?t begin until August 1. It?s now August 14, and a decision could still be a week away.

Which means that, if the suspension is upheld, Gordon will be gone until late August 2015, making it even harder for him to get ready for Week One.

Whether suspended or not, the NFL needs to speed things up dramatically. The NFLPA needs to insist on it, with firm deadlines for conducting appeal hearings and, under the substance-abuse policy, something other than the vague and open-ended requirement of a decision with a ?reasonable time.?

  19. amen, bluez. some people have an odd idea of what "reasonable" means.
