NFL teams can sign free agents without it working against them in the compensatory draft-pick process beginning today. It's June 1, in case you hadn't checked your calendar. Compensatory picks are awarded based on a loss-gain formula in free agency. The biggest obstacle for Jermichael Finley (neck) to get signed is inarguably his health, but it's possible teams will be more willing to entertain adding him now that he won't cost them a chance at a 2015 compensatory pick. Dustin Keller is also available.
Not arguing cause u culd b right, but if people didnt know who these guys were how wuld u rank 2013 season? a. 82 rec 954 yds 10 TDs b. 93 rec 1233 yds 13 TDs c. 84 rec 1492 yds 12 TDs d. 110 rec 1499 yds 8 TDs e. 87 rec 1646 yds 9 TDs f. 85 rec 1314 yds 8 TDs g. 98 rec 1426 yds 11 TDs h. 92 rec 1430 14 TDs i. 100 rec 1295 yds 12 TDs
Yo Bluez This one probably belongs in the Dumba$$-o-the-day category. Facing a one year suspension and then he does something equally as dumb... *WALL* *ROSE* *WALL* OK anyone got any good WR prosepects in the first round next year?
Not a Browns fan but I thought Gordon was the best WR in the league in 2013. He may not have had the most TDs, but to lead the league in receiving yards while missing 2 games let's me know he was the most productive. Factor in who he had opposite him (nobody), who he had at the RB position to take pressure off him (nobody), and who was throwing him the ball all year ( *ROFL*), he still produced better than every other WR while having a 2 game handicap. His performance in 2013 was nothing short of dominant.
Normally I can't stand CBS football writer, Jason LaCanfora, but in today's NFL headlines, he has an outstanding article about the weed smoking issue, and in particular the NFL's archaic stance....Very well written. I hope Roger Goodell and every NFL owner reads it and takes it to heart....It's time for a change.
Browns signed CB Aaron Berry. Berry, 25, missed all of last season due to a torn ACL and has appeared in just 19 games across four NFL seasons due to suspension and injuries. He's a flier addition for Mike Pettine, who coached Berry with the Jets in 2012. Berry doesn't lack talent, but it'll be tough to crack the Browns' rapidly improving corner unit that includes Joe Haden, Justin Gilbert, Buster Skrine, Pierre Desir and Leon McFadden.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter, who overcame drug addiction early in his career, stressed that Browns receiver Josh Gordon won't change until he finds his own rock bottom and asks for help. "It's fairly obvious that (using substances) is more important to him than anything else,'' the former Ohio State star told cleveland.com in a phone interview. "It's always been very, very important to him. It's well-documented that it's been primary since early college. Maybe it even goes back to early high school.'' Carter stressed that if Gordon can overcome his issues and stay healthy, he could be one of the best to ever play the game. "He's really one of the few receivers that's playing in the game now that with a sustained long and healthy career you can say he's got the potential to wear a gold jacket,'' said Carter. "He's pretty special.'' Carter, who turned his life and career around in Minnesota after Eagles coach Buddy Ryan cut him in 1990, helps plenty of players in the NFL struggling with substance abuse, but only the ones who are open to it. "If the building is on fire and the person decides to stay in there, I don't run in there and get him out,'' Carter said. "If you see them breaking the glass, if you see them struggling and trying to get out -- that's my analogy of how I help out the guys in the league and the kids that really, really need help.'' He indicated that Gordon, who's facing an indefinite suspension from the NFL for what's believed to be at least his third violation of the NFL's substance, might not be ready to quit yet. On May 25th, Gordon was ticketed for speeding, and the Cuyahoga Count Sherriff's deputy detected the smell of marijuana in the car, a source told cleveland.com. One of the Gordon's three passengers was cited for marijuana possession. "I'd much rather help an undrafted free agent that has a problem and he says I've got a problem and he wants some help, then help a guy who's first-team All-Pro (and hasn't reached out),'' said Carter. Carter said he and other NFL veterans are there for all of the players who need them, and that a lot goes on behind-the-scenes. "We get involved privately when guys have certain issues,'' said Carter. "But some players run away from the help as opposed to running to the help. Most of these kids, they don't want to have a heart-to-heart conversation. They've got enough people lecturing them and telling them what they should be doing.'' He cautioned that Gordon's situation could get worse before it gets better. "But unless you've talked to Josh, you don't know where he is,'' said Carter, who admitted using alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine. "Just like no one could explain my story, no one's going to be able to explain his.'' Carter said he wasn't willing to change until Ryan released him in 1990, just three years into his 16-year career. "My bottom was getting cut and I was so upset because even though they cut me, I wasn't using at the time,'' said Carter. "They cut me because they couldn't trust me. At the time, I had only flunked two tests. The next one, I would've been suspended for a year. I was clean for over six months at the time I got cut.'' During his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, Carter thanked Ryan through tears for saving his life, calling the move "the best thing that ever happened to me.'' When he got to Minnesota, he was open to all the help the Vikings had to offer. "Man, [the Vikings] invested so much time in me," Carter told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. "They got me to see the right people. Man, when I got there, I needed a lot of help. Oh my goodness." "It was a lot of hard work, but there were a lot of people helping me, not on the football field, but just getting my life together. They really cared about me. I owe everything to the Vikings. What they invested in me was more than money. What they taught me was how to live the rest of my life. I didn't have to be a prisoner to the things that held me back before. That I could finally, finally tap into my athletic ability. That was the first time that I really feel like the car was running 100 percent." Carter, who shares his story with rookies at the NFL's Rookie Symposium, declined to comment on whether or not he thinks Gordon would benefit from a stint in rehab. He added that fans are angry because most of them don't understand addiction. "Fans are unrealistic because they all think if they were in that situation, they would never do that,'' said Carter. "Everyone always thinks it's easy.'' But, he said, the fans are the least of Gordon's problems. "Josh can't even help himself,'' said Carter. "How can he help the fans?'' Gordon, who's spent time with Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin, was set to spend about three weeks in Minnesota this summer at Larry Fitzgerald's pro receiver camp, which is attended by Carter, Irvin and others. Carter doesn't know if Gordon is still planning to come "and I haven't thought a second about it. Josh is not my responsibility. Not everyone is in a position to be saved.''
I already know Gordon's numbers, so that's kind of unfair, but I would easily put his 87 catches for 1646 yards and 9 TDs at the top of the list. Not only is it a ridiculous number of yards, but it's a ridiculous average per catch. To round out my top 3 based on the numbers, I also like: C's 84 catches for 1492 and 12 TDs and H's 92 receptions for 1430 and 14 TDs They may not be the best WRs in the game (I think C is Calvin though), but they had amazing seasons.
Cleveland-area bar: Manziel can wait, Hoyer's the guy One establishment on the west side of Cleveland isn't on the Johnny Manziel bandwagon -- not yet at least. No, they're all for Brian Hoyer. Look no further than the sign outside owner Jim Stamper's bar. By Fox Sports
Yep, from Hoyer's old stomping grounds on the West Side...They are pulling for their local hero. Edit: they are also on the verge of selling/closing, so the publicity sure doesn't hurt...
Think I'll take a drive to the West Side just to buy a beer and do my part to keep them open. (and the sign up)
Haha...Nice Lym... I heard an interview with the owner on ESPNCleveland this morning and he had no intentions of it going viral. His son went to high school with Hoyer at St. Ignatius and he personally knows his parents who still live in the area. He intended to put it up on the sign for a couple of days just to support the family. He also said he is as big a Manziel fan as they come if he helps them win games and he wishes him a very long successful career with the Browns. It was never a negative sentiment towards Manziel, but rather a show of support towards the veteran and a call to make him earn his starting position. He said he is a Browns fan first and he supports those that will help the team win. They also had a running bet inside the tavern if people actually looked at the sign, he won...The employees always complained that changing the sign did little good, because no one reads it anyway.
Touchdown numbers can be misleading. Where were the scored from? For instance, Marlon Brown of the Ravens had 7 TDs but only about 500+ yards. He was a redzone thread but got lost between the 20s at times. in 2009, McGahee had 12 TDs because he was a goal line threat. E (Gordon) let's me know that player helped move my team into scoring range constantly. Especially when you factor in the 2 less games played. Someone else could have scored the TDs but that shouldn't mean his performance was any worse. I'd also be fine with G because, as said, it could just mean someone else scored while he did the heavy lifting, so to speak
u can base stats on all scenarios.....Gordon getting yds in garbage time late in the 4Q didnt help them win the game....P. George scoring 1 pt in the 1st half and then exploding for 28 pts in 2nd half when his team was down 37 pts doesnt mean he had a good game....I think Gordon helped the Browns possibly win 4 games when it mattered.....Minny, NE, Jax and KC....vs Pitt at home the score was 27-3 w 4:30 left in 4Q....Gordon finished w 111 yds and 1 TD to close it out....where the hell was he during the game when it was close and they had 3 pts?
Garbage time nothing, that only accounted for about 1/8 of his yards, which still gave him good numbers and the point that these teams KNEW it was coming and still couldn't stop him makes me want to see more and more of him in a Browns uni...Too bad we will most likely have to skip a year of that.
Yeah, stopper please....How can you really take away from the numbers Josh Gordon put up? lol! My gawd man, besides the excellent point Irish mentioned, what about the fact that he did it all on a team with no running game and piss poor QB's?? Seriously stopper. just stop it!...JG was absolutely spectacular last year. He makes it look way easier than it actually is. In my generation Cleveland never had a WR like him. I'm thinkin there's only been one that even comes close to comparing to Gordon in the Browns entire history, and that would be Paul Warfield. Never had the pleasure of seeing him play, but you can tell from all those NFL Films reels, that Warfield was special. Just like JG, he made it look easy. Both men have rare God given physical abilities. I just hope Josh doesn't waste it all. I really hope he gets his crap together in his personal life and puts together a stellar career that winds up with in the HoF someday too, because the ability is clearly there.
My point was where was he when the game was in balance vs Pitt....I keep hearing they had no run game....guess what that only helps put up more stats when ur throwing the ball most of the game. Like I said there were bout 4 games when he put up nice #s when they culd have won the game or did win the game.
