I said I'm not convinced they are. They may be, I realize you think they are but in my opinion there are question marks about Manziel's ability to play in the pocket and Bridgewater's arm. Yes, they can't change who is available but they definitely need a young QB on their roster. Doesn't mean they should jump at a guy ranked 25th on their board with the #1 pick just because he plays the QB position. I don't know what their board looks like but IF it looks like this... 1. Clowney 2. Mack 3. Matthews etc. etc. 25. Manziel 26. Bridgewater 27. Bortles etc. etc. 32. Carr etc. etc. 42. Mettenberger ... I can certainly understand them waiting until later in the draft to get a young QB on the roster.
(I'm assuming you meant moving up from #33.) Next up is the Rams at #2. I can see them not going QB as they have Sam Bradford already and, even if he's on shakey ground, they have the ability to double back for a QB at pick #13. Then there's the Jaguars at #3. Another QB needy team as I don't think anyone will confuse Chad Henne for either Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. The Jags' GM is Dave Caldwell, an 18 year veteran in NFL personnel circles. While I haven't scoured every mock draft out there, the majority of them I have looked at have either Khalil Mack or Sammy Watkins going to the Jags. Now, obviously, these are mock drafts done by people other than NFL GM's. But they do have some insight (and/or insider knowledge) as to how a particular team will pick. Here's my point: If the Jags do indeed go with Mack or Watkins with the #3 pick, then that would make two of the top three teams NOT taking a QB high in this draft. Note that these same two teams are QB needy. Is it possible that NFL personnel folks simply do not see ANY of the top QB's in this draft as the next elite/"franchise" QB?
So ur more worried bout a division team than ur own....Im sure Colbert or Farmer completely disagree and wuld rather have THEIR guy than who they trade w.....perfect example Shamarko was the guy they wanted and traded w whoever
Absolutely. 23 teams passed on Aaron Rodgers. 21 teams passed on Joe Flacco. 32 teams passed 198 times on Tom Brady. The GM cannot scout everyone in college and setup a board. They rely on their scouts for a ton of that legwork. They get to see the same game film as us and they get to see them in private workouts (if they so choose). That's about it. If you look at a lot of the franchises, most teams are risk averse. If a player isn't a consensus Top #1 pick, then most teams will pass on them. This class, in particular, has intriguing prospects that all carry question marks. The question I would offer in return would be: are these players worse than Blaine Gabbert (Blake Bortles), Christian Ponder (Teddy Bridgewater) or Jake Locker (Johnny Manziel) who were all chosen in the Top 12 picks in 2011. Just because a guy doesn't go #1 overall doesn't mean someone doesn't believe they can be the next franchise QB.
This also assumes that the decision makers are infallible when it comes to selections. The Browns traded up in 2012 one spot to select Trent Richardson, who is a bonafide bust. The very same scouts who viewed him, worked him out and considered him a "can't miss" prospect are still on the payroll of the Browns. Given a mulligan, would you have selected... Luke Kuechly - one of the best ILBs in the game? Dontai Poe - Pro Bowl NT? Ryan Tannehill - proficient QB? The same decision makers for Cleveland thought Brandon Weeden was a first round choice -- despite no other franchise in the League thinking he was worth more than a fourth round pick. Now, was that Mike Holmgren and/or Tom Heckert overriding the scouts? (And if so, why?) Or was that a consensus among the scouts and F/O that year?
Lyman, that is exactly the thinking on the QBs. Irish has his thoughts about Manziel being a good QB in this league, I also share that thought but the majority of the so call experts think that at the top of the draft the talent is better for other positions. Now the Texans, Jaguars, Browns, Vikings all need QBs for sure, it is just where to get them. Rolling the dice for the QB early is exactly that. There are thoughts on who, where and when each player should go and if on average the thought is the 1st QB taken is around 10 or so, you must find away to trade down, up or maybe miss out of your guy. The Rams and Browns are lucky in respect to having 2 picks in the 1st round this year and with the Rams at #13 or the Browns at #26. a QB is surely going to be on the board. It is the wildcard team that believes that Manziel or Brotles or Carr or Bridgewater is right for them, they might just start a run on them and it would be the Texans, Jags, Browns and Vikings that will suffer because of the pass on them. Irish is right, if the Browns think that Manziel is the right guy for the Browns for the next 10 years or so, draft him #4 even if the majority thinks he should go 10 or below. One chance to get your guy, do it or live without it, then watch to see how smart you were or how stupid you look now. It is a crap shoot at best.
I can't remember where I posted the link, but it is out there if you want to go looking. But there was an article that said Hokmgren made the call on those selections.
Well we now know why the Browns are passing on Manziel...Pettine has a closed mind w a decision already made....just like last yr w Weeden being the starter....what a joke to make that decision in May http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...nd-browns-coach-says-tough-unseat-brian-hoyer
Yo Duff *HI* Does this mean you've finally returned from your super secret lab and have a brand new batch of Kool-aid all brewed up *DRINK*
Those scouts that provided information that resulted in the drafting of both Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden were summarily dismissed by Banner (Haslam) following the 2013 draft.
:-* That's old news. There have been reports regarding the Coaching staff liking Hoyer for months now. So why don't you go crawl back under you rock. %)
What the F culd they like bout him? His 3 Ints vs Minny? His career backup status? 17 pts vs a beat up Cincy secondary(missing Hall and Nelson) ACL injury? That sounds like a rookie coach just looking out 4 himself.
Happy Thirsty Thursday Lounge Houndz *DRINK* Here's one specially brewed for our resident hound One one for the goat... Yup It's Beer thirty and draft day to boot... *DRINK* PS... In about four hours we'll know who the Browns like best this year
Thanks crextin you found my glass with my brew. *DRINK* Good luck to the Rams and Browns tonight, may it be the start to the top for both organizations. *SHADES*
Well fellas, here we are again! Happy draft day and here's to the Browns finally getting this draft thing right. I usually say every draft you need 3 good starters to call it successful. After last night sitting back and looking at the roster I like what Farmer has done with it. Getting the veterans in here to mix with this youth. This draft to me is the most important draft we've had around here in a long time. After arguing with some of you and myself I've come to this conclusion. Watkins is my man. That is my hope for pick #4. I am a line guy first but with Mack signing and bringing in a guard I'm happy with that choice. Now there is a couple of things to that. 1. I don't think he will be there at #4. 2. A trade to move up to get him. Which will mean he is still not there. I still think Clowney, Robinson and Watkins will be taken with the first 3 picks. If this happens then I'm tore between Mack or Evans. All I know right now is I don't want a QB. I guess if I'm going offense its Evans. Defense then Mack. We cant go wrong with either. But man am I hoping Watkins is there at #4. Then with the #26 pick if they pick Bridgewater, Carr or Manziel if he falls I'm happy with that. Then in the 2nd look CB. If we walk away with say Watkins/Evans, Bridgewater and Gilbert/Joyner/Verrett in 2 rds then I'm a very happy camper. Come on Brownies its time to show the fans something here tonight.
Nope. No Kool-Aid from me yet. Still waiting to see what this FO can do with the draft, first. Only about 60 minutes until the Browns announce their pick (or trade it). OL, WR, QB or whatever at #4, I'll support whoever we get and pray for the best. The time for all the petty bickering is at an end. Lets fill some roster holes, add some depth, and nail this draft!!!!!!!! And most of all let the Browns return to respectability!!!!!!!!!!
