If the player voids the 3rd year, that's on him. It is only guaranteed if the player does not opt out of it.

Re-read. It was only one year 15 M until the Browns declined to match and then it becomes a 5yr deal for 45 million ...

But none of that is relevant to the notion that you are trying to sell this thing as your garden variety contract offer. It is ground-breaking.

Then this contract is just about the same as the Browns tagging him at $10M, then hammering out a long term contract for $8M a year. The only difference I can see is that Mack can opt out after year 2 -and- the Browns cannot use the Franchise tag on him (which now they wouldn't anyway because he is under contract).

Why couldn't this debate be about somethiing more entertaining? I usually like when these guys debate...this is a yawner though. To bad no star players for the Steelers have been arrested for assault or anything lately. lol Then this would be fun.

No doubt TD..way too much time till the draft... Just over 4 1/2 weeks..

There is a point of the story that keeps getting glossed over by everyone (and especially the media which makes it embarrassing). There was an article stating an obscure rule with the transition tag regarding the signing period for the tag:

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2014/0...transition-tagged-players-begins-on-march-22/

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/six-nfl-players-tagged-2014-003709667--nfl.html

Extremely obscure as players on the transition tag for some reason cannot be signed by other teams until 2 weeks after the start of free agency while the franchise tag has no such restrictions. I am very sure the Ravens would have made a strong move for Mack at the beginning of free agency, but with the 2 week window (plus the time the Browns have to match), they couldn't simply sit on all their cap space and pin all their hopes on a deal with Mack and the Browns not matching the offer. Essentially Mack was completely taken off the table for teams looking to fill needs and plug in holes in free agency. The Jaguars are just a rebuilding team with a bunch of cap space.

It really had nothing to do with respect at all, and I find it hilarious when we see articles and tweets about how no teams were moving on Mack for weeks. There's a good reason for that - they weren't allowed.

  7. So I guess now the question is who we wont be able to sign next year? Haden? Cameron? Rubin? Sheard? Haden and Cameron will probably cost between $18-$20 million a year. But hey we have a 12 million dollar a year center! I hope this team wins more than 4 games next year or this move will drowned this fan base. Certainly if Haden, Cameron and then Gordon walks due to insufficient fundulation. Only the Browns would pay a center 13 million a year. He makes more than over rated Joe Thomas! A center!

Until the losing stops this will be the financial state of the Browns. Overpaying for everyone. They better learn how to build through the draft. Because free agency for them will be EXPENSIVE!!!!

Speaking of Free Agents, I'm about to become one.

    Els . . . You are a clueless idiot.

  9. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Actually Kid, that was just a matter of a typo from the league office, then the ineptitude of the Steelers reporter/website in validating their source.

Article 10, Section 3, Paragraph (b) clearly states that the player is free to negotiate and sign into a player contract beginning the first day of the league year to July 22nd.

Whoever wrote the press release mistakenly typed the 22nd twice in reference to the Transition Tag. Then the Steelers reporter quoted the mistaken press release.

Els, the only question of free agency will be on the shoulder of Brian Hoyer. If he comes out on fire and maintains it throughout the year as some of you think he will, he will want a big new starter worthy contract. At that time, the Browns will have to decide whether or not to pay him (and lose some other free agents) or let their 2014 draft pick take over where he left off.

Other than Hoyer, the salary cap we have will allow us to sign virtually all of those listed..unless you want to extend Taylor instead of Rubin, then Rubin will be allowed to walk and replaced with a draft pick.

The other one in question is Sheard...IF he becomes one of the top pass rushers in the NFL and demands an above average OLB payscale, then more than likely that means Kruger failed again to live up to expectations and he will be released saving the team about $4.5M in cap space that will be used to pay Sheard.

I have explained this a couple of times, you must just be blind to anything you don't want to see...

Yes, Haden and Cameron will demand about $18M between them...but they are currently making $10.5M between them, so it only represents an increase of $7.5M between the two of them...

In the end , the fact you are paying Mack NEXT SEASON $8M means very little in the grand scheme of paying future free agents...Now take that $8M and take into account signing a respectable center in his stead and you are only looking at a $4M premium on a player that is arguably the best at his position in the entire league.

Oh yeah, did I mention your numbers for Mack are ridiculous? Again a reading retention issue I am assuming...
Mack is not making $13M...or $12M like you are writing...it is $10M THIS SEASON ONLY, then it drops to $8M per season for as long as he stays between years 2-5.

So there you go, you just gained $4M in salary cap space to help pay for Haden and Cameron's $7.5 million increase.

haha that is awesome Irish! +1 for that! Thanks for correcting me and for the info. It wasn't just steelersdepot that reported it though (as SportsXchange was the Yahoo source). I did see steelersdepot listed as the source on some of the other articles about it out there which is why I searched for an article that didn't list them.

Former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater disappointed the NFL scouts, coaches and executives in attendance with a shaky performance at his Pro Day workout. Fortunately for Bridgewater, there are lots of private workouts between Pro Day and the draft, giving him lots of opportunities to change NFL perceptions of him.

Unfortunately for Bridgewater, those private workouts haven?t gone any better than his Pro Day. According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Bridgewater?s workouts for NFL teams have been very shaky.

The general sense seems to be that Bridgewater is sliding on draft boards. However, all it takes is one team to love Bridgewater, and he?ll still be a high first-round pick.

And it?s easy to see why a team would love Bridgewater: He was an excellent player at Louisville. Anyone would rather have a player who excels on the field but struggles in workouts than a player who struggles on the field but excels in workouts.
