I think it's based on cash not cap so that would make it easy to catch up. A handful of really big signing bonuses over the next few years will do it. There are several teams that are well below the cap right now and don't seem to be panicked so it's probably not a concern.

  2. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Ahh, didn't realize that...I feel a little better then. They should have some significant signing bonuses over the next 2 off seasons.

  3. beachbum Legend Manager Steelers

Yeah we'll see. Last night the report was that it was a traditional contract, not a muddled one. So if that's the case I'll be wrong. You on the other hand have both sides covered! :p

    Now who's reaching .... :D

Irish 72 hours ago you thought ...

    * Mack was probably a little embarrassed because he went looking for value and came up empty
    * No team was going to pay Mack 27M over three years - which is what it would take for the Browns to let him walk
    * His market value was 7M per
    * My entire idea of a short term contract with Mack in control was a "little fantasy"
    * Lym had a really crappy drivers ed teacher

So you were 1 for 5

Irish I value your opinion as much as anyone in these forums but you're a little too close to this. I know because I'm still convinced Mike Adams is going to be a Pro Bowl Left Tackle some day. <------- B&G goggles.

Not sure what you are talking about it. I copy and pasted that exact interview - quotes and all. I'm not suggesting he's harboring resentment for Chud's firing. I'm saying he'd be a fool if he didn't look at how Haslam handled that situation and make it part of his free agent evaluation. It was embarrassing.

It is based on actual cash spending - not salary cap. Here's an article I found that explains the minimum requirement (and the difference between "Cash Spending" and Salary Cap") fairly well.

I understand this point, I was only looking at the aspect of the Browns being able to force Mack to play in Cleveland for 2 seasons one way or the other.

  6. beachbum Legend Manager Steelers

Yea I thought that was it. They'll still need to spend some money over the next two years though.

Here?s an update on what the rest of the AFC North teams have been up to since the start of the free-agency signing period on March 11:

    Baltimore Ravens

RETAINED: WR/KR Jacoby Jones, SS Jeromy Miles, LT Eugene Miles, TE Dennis Pitta, ILB Daryl Smith

ADDITIONS: TE Owen Daniels, RB Justin Forsett, WR Steve Smith, SS Darian Stewart

LOSSES: WR Tandon Doss, CB Corey Graham, SS James Ihedigbo, DE Arthur Jones, ILB Jameel McClain, RT Michael Oher

Comments: The addition of Daniels and Pitta?s return arguably give the Ravens the best tight-end tandem in the NFL. Both are recovering from injuries, but when healthy, they can be highly effective. And Daniels should benefit from his understanding of the scheme of new Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, who was Daniels? coach in Houston. ?Although Smith is 35 and entering his 13th NFL season, the former Carolina Panther still figures to have enough left to provide the Ravens significant help at a position of need. ?The losses of Graham, Ihedigbo, Jones, and McClain will hurt the defense.

    Cincinnati Bengals

RETAINED: FS Taylor Mays, MLB Vincent Rey, WR Brandon Tate

ADDITIONS: QB Jason Campbell, SS Danieal Manning, LB Dontay Moch, OT Marshall Newhouse, DB R.J. Stanford

LOSSES: OT Anthony Collins, DB Brandon Ghee, OLB, James Harrison, WR Andrew Hawkins, DE Michael Johnson

Comments: The Bengals lost some quality players on both sides of the ball with the departures of Collins, Hawkins (who joined the Cleveland Browns), and Johnson. ?They tend to be fairly passive about shopping in the open market, but they did make a couple of additions to their secondary with Manning, who has made 91 starts in eight seasons with Chicago and Houston, and Stanford, who has been a backup the past four years. ?Campbell, who spent last season with the Browns, gives the Bengals a veteran backup for Andy Dalton.

    Pittsburgh Steelers

RETAINED: FS Will Allen, TE Michael Palmer, C/OG Cody Wallace, LS Greg Warren, OG/OT Guy Whimper, OLB Jason Worilds

ADDITIONS: RB LeGarrette Blount, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, FS Mike Mitchell, OLB Arthur Moats, WR Lance Moore, NT/DE Cam Thomas, CB Brice McCain

LOSSES: CB Curtis Brown, OT Levi Brown, FS Ryan Clark, WR Jerricho Cotchery, RB Jonathan Dwyer, ILB Larry Foote, DE Ziggy Hood, TE David Johnson, WR Emanuel Sanders, OLB LaMarr Woodley, NT Al Woods

Comments: The Steelers have been a bit more active than usual in free agency. Mitchell, who spent last season with the Panthers, gives them a starter to replace Clark. Blount, Moats, Moore, and Thomas provide solid depth and can be effective as situational substitutions. McCain and Heyward-Bey have been inconsistent, but the Steelers are going to see whether a change of scenery might bring out the best in them. ?One of their more important moves was keeping Worilds and hanging onto Wallace and Whimper for depth on the offensive line.

Actually your scenario was $26M over 2 years, with opt out after one...[edit:] I won this one on a technicality, they are offering $26M over 3 years on a player option, so it came up $1M short

Looking at currently contracts and his standing as a center, I personally would STILL rate his market value at $7M, I obviously am wrong since at the very least the Jaguars are willing to over pay...and most likely the Browns as well.

Again, your "idea for a short term contract" was a 2 year deal, opt out after one worth $26M..that's a far cray from 5 year deal with opt out after 2 and $18M guaranteed...

    This is what you said...

What part of HIS EXACT QUOTES makes it look like he is telling the Browns he doesn't want to be in Cleveland. He met with them in private, I am sure he has spoken to them on the phone, one of his best friends in Joe Thomas has reiterated what the Browns have been saying...

The regime won a game less than the one they took over for...THAT is the embarrassing mark on this latest fiasco. Banner and Lombardi put together a team of players and coaches and they were worse than the regime before that was inherited. Haslem, took care of that mistake quickly and has let Farmer do it the way he envisions.

I don't care how it LOOKS to a Steelers fan...I as a Browns fan believe Ben Roethlisberger raped at least 2 women in his life. Doesn't mean it happened, but that is certainly my perception of the facts presented.

I would rather get this right sooner than later, and any player present or future should want just that as well. THAT should be taken into consideration when he is thinking about free agency. By HIS STATEMENTS, I believe he has taken that into consideration.

I don't in any way shape or form believe he would "rather" one franchise over the other...I think he wanted a max contract and his agent got that for him. I think as soon as his name is on paper, he is a happy camper no matter what the final plane ticket destination reads.

  11. Lets b honest....if Mack was an unrestricted FA he would have been gone...people can come up w all these scenarios, but we all know if he truly wanted to b in Clev he wuld have signed his deal when the whole group came out 2 see him. Im sure they didnt waste their time and go see him and low ball him.

  12. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Yes, honestly, I believe you could be right Stopper...BUT I also believe he would have signed with a Super Bowl contender like the 49ers or Broncos (not looking at rosters, just examples) for much less money. It wouldn't have been to another dysfunctional team like the Jaguars.

At the end of the day, Mack didn't get the value from respectable teams that his agent said he would.

I believe HONESTLY, Mack will be just as happy (and probably happier) in Cleveland than he would in Jacksonville. It just happens Jax was the ONLY team that was even willing to talk contract that put him in the ballpark of Cleveland not matching.

To simply say he doesn't want to be here or he would have signed that deal in merit-less. What motivation did he have for signing that deal that day? Even if he got $500K guaranteed over these next 2 years, it was worth not signing the deal. But more importantly, I would almost guarantee they didn't have a Player Option after year two in the language and that is the only thing they could come up with for Jacksonville to even get into the conversation.

In reality, this is a pretty straight forward contract that saves the Browns money over the first two years AND gives the player incentive after those two years if he wants to test the market for real.

See you in two years, on this subject, the story line could be VERY different by then...

Kaepernick could be in prison and Manziel could have led the Browns to consecutive playoff appearances...

No one knows, which is why we all keep coming back!!

  13. Irish, I agree somewhat, but if u and me were really happy w our job and were getting a nice raise....r u still going out and looking at another competitor? If I like my job, I cant wait to sign on the dotted line w a significant increase in pay.....mayb Im different, but thats just how I feel

  14. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Very true Stopper. however you and I also live in the real world...An upgrade in our salary doesn't equate to the equivalent of a beach house in Malibu!

Mack doesn't sign this, and he gets $10.039M

Mack signs and he now is guaranteed $26M over the next 3 years, even if he gets hurt, that money will end up in his bank account.

The difference between the time the Browns went to Cali and he signed this offer, negligible because he isn't working out for either club where he would be found out to injure himself to void the contract...

Now, it is money in hand whether in Florida or Ohio.

For an extra $16M over the next 3 years, my company could move my family and I to Siberia. I could hire a private American tutor for education and come home very happy....

I won't see $16M over the course of my 50 years in the workforce... That equates to about $320,000 per year in case you are wondering...

Is the weather nice on your planet? It's gorgeous here today! :D

Before anyone else on the planet was talking about it I laid a scenario out where Mack would sign a short term contract with the ability to extend it to a 5 year deal AT HIS DISCRETION. I also said it would make him the highest paid center in the NFL.

The sole purpose of the voidable years (I called it an option) was to put the Browns in a precarious situation where he could literally take his money and run. I even said don't look at the exact numbers, use your own numbers if you like but the point remained the same. The Bucs were willing to take considerable risk and trust that Mack would elect to play the entire 5 year deal in Jacksonville.

Now you "won" because I didn't nail the exact structure of the contract before anyone else even speculated on what it could contain? You said it was...

    1) a fantasy
    2) a reach
    3) no team would 8.5-9M and make him the highest paid center
    4) no self-respecting franchise would take that risk
    5) no respectable general manager would do a deal like that
    6) he will end up signing a deal with the browns
    7) there is no market for Mack
    8) the league wouldn't approve such a deal because it's a poison pill
    9) not gonna happen in the real world
    10) this was a simple free agency deal
    11) the browns wouldn't match 26M over three years but they will match 22M over two

If the terms of the deal are as reported I think Mack is a Jaguar.

  16. Browns match....gonna b some other players that want their big time $$$$ now

  17. bluez M.V.P. Browns Indians

We spent a lot of time this week talking about the Jaguars? plans to present an offer sheet to transition-tagged center Alex Mack and what the Browns, who hold the right to match any offer, might do if the offer sheet was sent their way.

It looks like we spent a lot more time talking about it than the Browns needed to make their decision. Mack signed the offer sheet from the Jaguars on Friday and Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jay Glazer of FOX Sports both report that the Browns have decided to match it and hold onto Mack before the day is out.

It?s reportedly a five-year, $42 million with $26 million guaranteed and the Browns have until next Wednesday to make their decision official. Indications all week have been that they were inclined to match the offer, however, and Schefter?s report suggests that those indications were right on target. According to Glazer, the Browns had gone back and forth about the decision because of the size of the guaranteed money before ultimately opting to hold onto one of the league?s best centers.

Matching the deal means the Browns won?t need to use any of their 10 draft picks on a center, but the Jaguars will likely be in the market for one with Mack in Cleveland and Brad Meester retiring after a long run with the Jags.

  18. Whoever said the last sentence must b dilusional(Schefter or Glazer) lol

  19. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

    Here's a link to the story concerning the Browns matching the Jag's offer;

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...acksonville-jaguars-alex-mack?addata=module-b

    Reported terms are $10M year 1 and $8M years 2 through 5. $26M guaranteed ($10M + $8M + $8M). Mack can void the contract after two years.

Question: What happens if (when) he voids the contract after two years as part of the $26M guaranteed is the $8M he would have received during year three? Can sit on his ass for a year and STILL collect $8M?

  20. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Which is basically what you said based on my thoughts...

    You are lumping all of these statements from the entire debate into the end result...Fact is the end result is much closer to my prediction of multiple years at $8M each, than your original of 1 YR/$15M or your next idea of;

    5yrs, 45 million (22M guaranteed)
    15 million signing bonus
5 million guaranteed option bonus in the second year
23M over the final three years

then you went on to say..."My numbers may be conservative. Maybe they guarantee 30 of the 45 million IF he exercises the player option. You're the one being ridiculous if you don't think "Alex has a choice in the matter". "

    THEN you changed it to:
    "Maybe it's not a 5 year deal. Maybe it's a 7 year, 60M deal with half guaranteed but it starts out as a 1yr, 15M contract. "

Then..."You're missing the point. The numbers really don't matter. If Mack truly doesn't want to be in Cleveland by signing him to a one year deal with a player option they give all the leverage to the player. Make it 1 yr, 12M with player options for Years 2-5 and a total guaranteed contract of 20M. The Browns aren't likely to match that offer because clearly Alex doesn't want to be there and they'll be looking at a 1 year, 12M deal. For the Jaguars, it's a 5 year deal because they expect him to exercise the player option (because they just spent 2 weeks negotiating the deal)."

OK, you want to lay out semantics?

This was the post that set it all off...

So, on April 6th after the very first word that the Jaguars were offering 3 years $22M...

    I STATED
The actual deal ends up at $8.6M per year for multiple years...

THEN we went into debates with your initial statement:

Your offer to the debate was ONE YEAR, 15 MILLION...

Arguing semantics, I initially said the BROWNS would end up signing him to about $8M for multiple seasons and in response to Lym said no team would pay him 3 years $27M or $9M per year...

The actual terms break down to $8.6M per year, so I was pretty damn dialed in on the numbers, don't you think?

You relied almost strictly on basically a one year deal with player options to follow, what they ended up with was a 2 year deal and a single player year option, then 2 more team option years...

Which is much closer to a 5year $8M per year, than a 1 yr $15M
