And even more smoke billowing out of the Browns Front Office's wazoos (according to Yahoo): Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole says it "sounds like" the Browns are "definitely" going pass rusher with their first-round pick. Colleague Mike Silver adds that the Browns could trade up to the Raiders' No. 3 spot, and he believes the target is BYU's Ezekiel Ansah. The Eagles at No. 4 and the Lions at No. 5 are also likely eyeing pass rushers if one of the top offensive tackles doesn't make it to them, so the jump up to No. 3 for the Browns could be a necessary move to ensure they get who they want. Ansah could play end or outside linebacker in the 3-4.
Duff they would be brain dead to move up in this draft IMHO .. either stay put at 6 or trade down . now i need that drink before this madness begins . if you hear Big Foot like noises dont be alarmed .its just Bluez pissed at the way things are going in round 1 .
Browns selected LSU OLB Barkevious Mingo with the No. 6 overall pick. Mingo (6-foot-4, 241) tormented the SEC to the tune of 15 tackles for loss and eight sacks as a sophomore before his production dipped to 8.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks last year. LSU coaches asked Mingo to work more in containment, but he failed to finish plays and must learn to play with better leverage. Still a highly explosive edge presence with big upside, Mingo is relentless with rare speed and length (33 3/4" arms). At the Combine, he ranked first among D-Linemen in the ten-yard split (1.55) and broad jump (10-foot-8), as well as second in the forty (4.58) and vertical (37"). Mingo will convert to outside linebacker in Cleveland's 3-4, where he'll be a natural fit. Jabaal Sheard may want to start packing his bags.
So ur telling me Jarvis Jones isnt better than Mingo...what a joke and thats why Pitt is usually ahead of the Browns.
I like Jones much more than I like Mingo. We'll see how it works out though. I wouldnt take Jones at pick 6 though. Not after his stock seemed to fall.
Pitt GM said thats the best thing that happened was Jones running a slow 40...if he runs better they dont get him at 17....steal
Browns team owner Jimmy Haslam spoke briefly to corporate sponsors Thursday night at a draft party inside Casey Coleman Fieldhouse and told them this offseason and draft is the first step to making the Browns a contender. Haslam was greeted by applause at everything he said. He made no mention of the FBI investigating Pilot Flying J., his truck stop chain based in Knoxville, Tenn. He took no questions and steered clear of reporters on the other side of the fieldhouse. Haslam did not make any promises for this year, but in 2014 ? look out, "(We) had a good free agency, still have plenty of cap room, have a great draft," Haslam told the group. We need to have another good free agency, have another great draft. "If we do that, we'll be able to compete in our division. Let's face it; if you can compete in our division (AFC North), you got a chance to win the Super Bowl, right?" The Browns had a three-day minicamp last week and can practice outside on a limited basis without pads. Haslam was in Berea last week before jetting to Knoxville to make a statement about the investigation for alleged fraud at Pilot Flying J. The FBI and IRS raided Pilot Flying J on April 15. At some point over the next 10 days, Haslam was on the Berea practice fields. "The pace, intensity, tempo, no comparison to last year," Haslam said. "The energy level at practice is quite different. Players are real excited, giving me thumbs-up." Haslam is in the war room for the draft, but he is deferring to CEO Joe Banner and General Manager Mike Lombardi.
While the Browns have spent their entire offseason bulking up the pass rush, they have left the defensive secondary alone. The only problem is that they still need two starters back there. The Browns need to find a starting cornerback to play opposite Joe Haden and a starting free safety to play alongside TJ Ward. Joe Banner and Michael Lombardi felt that passing on Dee Milliner, the cornerback from Alabama, was a necessity in order to sure up their defensive pressure. So where do they turn for help now? ?As we have said all along, we are really not going to force filling a need on a short term basis as opposed to building the team we want to have to get really good and sustain it,? said Browns? CEO Joe Banner. ?At corner as well as other positions, will be looking for someone we feel can fill the spot and do so for a while and do so at a championship level. If that situation presents itself that would be great. If not we?re not going to force it.? The reality of the situation is that they might not be able to find permanent solutions for both positions this season. If they can?t find them in the draft, the tail end of free agency, or after training camp cuts then Joe Banner and Michael Lombardi may have to settle for a ?stopgap.? As much as fans hate to hear it, it is almost impossible to fix an entire roster in one off season. Banner has accepted that fact and will have to settle for a player they need instead of fixing a problem with a player they truly want. ?We are not going to fill all the needs on this team this year,? said Banner. ?It?s just not going to happen, I?ll tell you right now.? While the Browns do not currently own a second round pick, there are some corners that may still be available in the third round or later. Blidi-Wreh Wilson from Connecticut might still be available when the third round begins and he fits the Browns needs perfectly. Wilson is a big, physical corner who thrives in zone coverage and pressing at the line of scrimmage, both things he will be asked to do in the Browns new 3-4 scheme. If you put enough pressure on the quarterback, it can turn decent corners and safeties into good ones. Banner is rolling the dice in hopes his new pass-rushing group can create enough pressure to do that for whoever he gets to fill out the defensive secondary
By Jeff Schudel JSchudel@News-Herald.com @jsbrownsinsider The Browns did not take a cornerback with their only draft choice Thursday night and will not reach for one to put a Band-Aid on the secondary, CEO Joe Banner said while praising first-round pick Barkevious Mingo. The draft resumes at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Browns do not have a second-round pick because they used it on wide receiver Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft last year. Their third-round pick is 68th overall. "If that situation presents itself, that would be great. But if not, we're not going to force it," Banner said. "We're not going to fill all the needs of this team this year. It's just not going to happen." Chris Owens and Buster Skrine played cornerback in the minicamp last week. The starter last year, 34-year-old Sheldon Brown, is a free agent. Safety, guard and inside linebacker could be added to the list of needs. The Browns have six picks remaining ? one in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh round plus two in the fifth. Rounds 4-7 are set for Saturday beginning at noon. Pick Six The last time the Browns had the sixth pick in the draft, they chose tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. from the University of Miami. Butch Davis was the head coach. The last player the Browns drafted from LSU was Chase Pittman in 2007. Mingo is the ninth player drafted by the Browns from LSU. Did anyone notice that Ke Ke (god I have such a hard time referring to a grown man with the same nickname for my 4 year old, keighton) was wearing browns colors?? Orange and brown patterned tie and orange pocket square....did he know all along, or does he just have a keen fashion sense?
