Cleveland Browns running back Willis McGahee and linebacker D?Qwell Jackson feel the players need to help out the other side of the football by executing better. For success in the NFL, all 53 men on the roster must play in unison and complement each other. After the Cleveland Browns? 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field Sunday, veteran running back Willis McGahee said the offense needed to do a better job of upholding its end of the bargain. ?I look at it as we?re not helping our defense,? McGahee said. ?We can do a lot of things better from everybody on the offensive side of the ball. We put our defense out there too much last night, and they?re going to break if you keep putting them out there more and more. They?re going to give sooner or later. ?As an offense, we need to do a whole lot better because we don?t want to be that team that relies on the defense the whole time. We need to put points on the board. We need to get good drives going. If we get good drives going and put our defense on the sideline for like six, seven minutes, that helps out a whole lot.? In addition to helping the defense, McGahee feels the Browns? offense needs to help itself, particularly the quarterback position. Against the Packers, McGahee and the Browns rushed for 83 yards on 23 carries. As a whole, the offense totaled 216 yards and converted only seven of 18 third-down attempts (39 percent) at Lambeau Field. ?We watched film, and basically, it?s the little things: not finishing blocks or mental errors,? McGahee said. ?Lining up wrong, that?s just killing us. I think that?s the biggest part. We?ve got a quarterback that we need to help. That?s everybody, the O-line, the wide receivers, the running backs. We can?t put all the pressure on (Brandon Weeden), and we?re not helping him right now. ?It?s hard for a quarterback to come out and be perfect. At the end of the day, I take my hat off to him because he still walks around with a smile on his face. He?s still competitive, and that right there shows what kind of character he has.? Defensive captain and inside linebacker D?Qwell Jackson said his side of the football ?can?t afford to make crucial mistakes,? which includes missing tackles, and nowhere was that more evident than on the Packers? first possession of the game. Green Bay tight end Jermichael Finley gave the Packers a 7-0 lead over the Browns with a 10-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Aaron Rodgers with 12:22 left to play in the first quarter. Finley ran to the left of the formation, caught the pass and spun his way through a tackle attempt from Browns linebacker Craig Robertson. Then, he worked his way through two more attempts from safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Buster Skrine before pushing his way across the goal line. ?We did a poor job of tackling against Green Bay, and we knew that going into the game, they don?t take a ton of shots downfield,? Jackson said. ?They rely on a lot of quicker throws and allow their athletes to make plays. The first two touchdowns, it was obvious that we were missing tackles, and a one-yard gain ends up turning into a touchdown. Those types of things, we?re much better than that. It just comes down to fundamentals.?
I just saw a mock draft on CBS and yes the Browns are taking a QB with that 1st pick. They have the Browns picking 15th and Indy's 28th pick. Time to start losing fellas. They have the Browns taking Mettenberger from LSU. With Indy's pick 28th they have us taking Seastrunk RB from Baylor. Heres what they have. Jags- Bridgewater Bucs- Mariota Giants- Clowney Texas- Manziel Vikings- Barr OLB, UCLA Rams- Mathews Raiders- Watkins Steelers- Hundley Falcons- Lewan Rams- Clinton Dix Eagles- Boyd Browns- Mettenberger I don't think this is how it will end up but I want Hundley, Boyd or Mariota. Time to tank. Keep Weeden in there he sucks and they have already given up on him. I do like Seastrunk though. He is an all American. If we could walk out of the 1st rd. with Boyd, Hundley or Mariota then Seastrunk I will be a very happy camper. I don't want Mettenberger. Then we could go WR, FS or guard in the 2nd rd. Come on Browns don't keep letting me down. Suck for purpose this time. We need a good young QB.
*DRINK* Thirsty Thursday Funnies... *DRINK* http://espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&action=blog&r=17&post_id=24191 Like him or not some of his stuff is pretty good
Eeh...I am convinced taking a RB in the first round is foolish...I would rather get an elite G, CB, or S to go with that shiny new QB with the Indy pick. To be perfectly honest, if we end up at the end of the top ten or into the teens, I would rather use the Indy pick to move up to get the guy I am enamored with, rather than take what's left when my pick rolls around. I am high on several QBs, but I just don't think I would roll the dice that my guy would be there when I pick.
By Fred Greetham OBR Senior Browns Reporter Posted Oct 24, 2013 The Cleveland Browns offensive line will have a tall task Sunday controlling the Kansas City Chiefs defensive line, which is a big reason why they're 7-0. 0 Comments BEREA--One of the key reasons the Kansas City Chiefs are off to a 7-0 start this season is fueled by their defense. They are the third overall ranked defense in the NFL. However, the Chiefs lead the league in some of the biggest categories that determine outcomes of games, namely points allowed, turnover ratio, third down and sacks. The offensive line knows it has a yeoman's task ahead of them. "They have a really good defense with a really good pass rush," Joe Thomas said. "They have Pro Bowlers all over the defense. "You throw in them getting a lead and then sacks happen," he said. "Sacks pile up when they get a lead and everybody knows you're going to pass, they dial up the blitz." Shawn Lauvao agrees with Thomas. "They have some tremendous athletes across the front," Lauvao said. "We have our week cut out for us." In fact, the Chiefs rank no lower than fifth in any defensive category in the NFL. The 67 points they have scored off of 19 turnovers account for 39.6 percent of the team's points. The Chiefs lead the NFL in turnover ratio at plus 12. In 2013, the Chiefs have allowed just 81 points in seven games or 11.6 per game. They are also first in third down efficiency allowing first downs just 25.3 percent of the time. In addition, they have accounted for the league lead in negative plays (51) and three-and-outs (28). They also allow only 4.78 yards per pass. To top it off, the Chiefs make it tough to score touchdowns in the red zone as they have allowed touchdowns just 22.2 percent of the time when opponents are inside the 20. Willis McGahee sees a silver lining with this week's opponent. "They're playing great ball," McGahee said. "They're ranked in the top five (in most areas), but Cincinnati has a pretty good defense and we moved the ball on them." The Browns had 336 yards against the Bengals in a 17-6 win on Sept. 29. The Chiefs have two of the top four pass rushers in the NFL in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. Houston lines up as the left outside linebacker and he has 10 sacks, while Hali comes from the right and he has nine sacks. Houston is ranked second, while Hali is fourth. Hali has 71.5 sacks since 2006. Mitchell Schwartz will line up opposite of Houston and knows he will have his hands full. "A lot of it is they're good players," Schwartz said. "Good players and good schemes and the coaches put the players in a position to make plays." The Chiefs try to dictate the opposing offense. On three occasions, the Chiefs have had six or more sacks, including nine against the Raiders on Oct. 13. "They have a great front with great talent and they play together well," Mack said. "We have a tough game in front of us. They have a good defense that is number one in a lot of areas. "We're going to try and negate what they do." To top it off, Jason Campbell will be making his first start for the Browns in arguably one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL agains a top-flight defense. However, Campbell has started 71 games in his nine-year NFL career, but only one in the last two years. "They're tough," Campbell said. "As an offense, we just have to go in there and do what we do and try to be as patient as possible and keep ourselves in good positions to win." Thomas is confident in Campbell. "He's steady and has a lot of experience in this league," Thomas said. "I think it is valuable to have any game experience and it's going to be really valuable to us (Sunday)." EXTRA POINTS Horton Wishes Finley Well: Defensive coordinator Ray Horton took a moment to open his press conference with the media to address Packers' TE Jermichael Finley, who was injured last week on a hit by DB Tashaun Gipson. "We're happy that Jermichael Finley is out of the hospital and doing better," he said. "We wish him well." Horton was asked if it's hard to coach the players on the proper techniques that are within league rules. "It's easy to coach, but hard to officiate." Horton said that Gipson's hit was legal. "It was shoulder-to-shoulder," he said. "It was unfortunate (Finley) was hurt, but it validates we're coaching the right way. It's a physical game and if you do it properly, it can be done in today's NFL." McGahee Rests: RB Willis McGahee was not a full participant in practice. The Browns said last week that he would be given a day off each week to rest his knee to "keep him fresh". Also, not practicing was LB Quentin Groves (ankle). It was the second-straight day that Groves did not practice. DL Billy Winn (quad) practiced again. Brotherly Love: OL Mitchell Schwartz' brother, Geoff, is an offensive lineman for the Chiefs and this will be the first time the brothers' NFL teams have faced one another. "He's on the O-Line, so I'm not going to be facing him," he said. "But, it will be cool to see him." Mitchell Schwartz was asked if their mother had a jersey made up that is half Browns colors, half Chiefs colors. "I think Mom has that going."
this is where we differ .I am not that crazy about one QB yet to move up to get him when we have so many needs . there is no Luck or RGIII in this draft . how much difference is there between this years crops of QB'S ? other than Bridgewater who maybe the best but is not in Lucks category . I say take which one falls .one always does then with the other first round pick grab a WR / CB someone you can use . I agree on finding RB later in the draft .I am getting a man crush on Buckeye RB Carlos Hyde . he is strong with good hands . 2nd or third rnd maybe .
simply put the Browns need to get the ground game going. smack them in the mouth early and often . use pa to take some deep shots to Gordon . get Benji involved in the offense more . he is a big play waiting to happen . short screens get him in space where he can do some damage in the open field .
Taking an RB in the first round isn't going to happen. The FO have people who don't believe in drafting a RB that early. I can see them using any number of the picks in the first 4 rounds to move into position to get "their guy" whomever it is going to be. Bluez I do like what I've seen of Hyde so far this year. Not sure if he'll be a 2-3 rounder, though we'll seee how the rest of the Buckeyes season goes. If they did get him I'd like to see him used as the FB with Lewis behind him. Just think of what Norv and Chud could do with the offense then. Would also give the Browns that short yardage / goal line guy we're missing. I'd like to see them use the second 1st round pick to get a second stud CB or WR, my guess is they'd go WR.
